About

"10YC - Ten Years Clothing"

10YC is a Japanese apparel brand with a simple vision: to enrich the world through clothing. The company was founded in September 2017 by a team of young textile industry workers who were fed up with the way their industry was operating. They identified many problems with the incentives manufacturers were chasing, and the products consumers were receiving. They have decided the best way to express their vision is through 10YC's concept of "clothing that lasts for a decade".

10YC Team (Haruka,Shota,Yoshiki)
10YC Team (Haruka,Shota,Yoshiki)

"We felt like we were manufacturing trash"

Two of our founders (Shota Shimoda and Yoshiki Ushiro) were originally in charge of production at a major Japanese apparel company. They processed tens of thousands of orders from production factories. Over the course of their employment, they found themselves having to engage in aggressive negotiations with factory owners to lower the cost of manufacturing. At times this would mean stressful negotiations to achieve a price reduction of a little as 1 to 5 cents per item. Even after achieving the desired reductions in price, our founders watched as distributors and stores would offer discounts and sales on their products - upwards of 70% off the original price. To make matters worse, if there was any stock leftover after the sale, it would be thrown in the trash. As Shota put it, “As a human being who was manufacturing products, it was an exact feeling of manufacturing trash".

"The Epiphany"

In a similar fashion, when Shota Shimoda was at his co-founder Nezu's, his roommate said "I only got to wash this t-shirt once, what kind of work is going on in your industry?" When we heard this, we started to think about the work we were doing for manufacturers. " Shota said: "I noticed that I was making clothes, but I noticed that I was also just making clothes to "sell to customers."" We realized that we wanted to make clothes for a different reason - clothes that we actually wanted to wear. With this realization, the team began making t-shirts.

Our goal is to deliver 10YC’s first product - The 10YC Tee (Available in Black and White).

How can it last for 10 years?

Our initial concern when founding 10YC was whether or not people would be interested in our designs, as opposed to the longevity of the product. When we finally started our product development, we decided to focus on both the ideas of “toughness” and “comfort” of the Tee:

  •  Toughness: Made to last 10 years: Resistant to pilling/lint formation, retains it’s color and silhouette during the laundering process, and otherwise difficult to shrink or deform.
  •  Comfort: Feels comfortable to wear at every point in the garment’s life-cycle, easy to wear/remove, and ease of movement during use.

Our dream for the 10YC Tee is to create a product that unifies these two ideas.

Design - Minimal

10YC Tee has a minimal design, with no pockets, no logo, and no unnecessary decorations. We have designed our Tee in such a way that it can be worn anytime, anywhere.

Silhouette - Smart

Our Tee’s minimal design accentuates it’s silhouette, which is the shape of the T shirt itself. We felt that this was very important. We created a silhouette with a refreshed look, by thinning the torso from the side to the hem.

Fabric - New Feeling & Toughness

  • Exclusive Braiding Process

10YC Tee is thick (about 9 oz of material in the T shirt), but its texture is very soft and finished. At first glance it resembles common fabric, but we choose to use a machine called a hanging knitting machine that we sourced from Wakayama, Japan. During manufacturing, we ensure that the threads are not forcibly manipulated. Although the production efficiency of the hanging knitting machine is only about one tenth of that of a general knitting machine, it can knit the fabric in a way that makes full use of the original softness of the raw cotton material. In addition, this fabric is hard to harden or twist even when washed, and it retains this softness after years of wash cycles.

  • Durable and Resilient Fabric

It would not be enough if customers enjoyed the feeling of wearing our Tee in the first few months after purchase. We had to ensure that pilling and lint formation on the surface of the shirt would not occur for years and years. The fabric of the 10YC Tee has a two-layer structure. The inside of the fabric uses a soft, plush texture that is comfortable without feeling constricting on the skin. On the other hand, the outside of the fabric has a smooth surface, the thickness is uniform, and it is incredibly resistant to pilling and lint formation.

Clothing that Enriches

10YC aims to create clothes that remain a part of you during your day to day life. Instead of designing our garments for special occasions or decorative purposes, we choose to focus on qualities such as comfort, versatility and customer experience. Our goal is to deliver a consistent feeling of satisfaction and elation every time you wear our clothes. Clothing that will enrich you every time you wear it.

From Serious Play to Serious Work

Our mission began with the simple idea of wanting to make a good t-shirt for our customers. We experimented and played around with designs and materials with our sights set on breaking into the fashion industry. However, things took a turn and we gradually became aware of many of the dark corners of the industry that many consumers are unaware of. Some of the major issues that we uncovered were:

  • The burden that manufacturers face due to aggressive price competition/low costs of production in developing nations.
  • Unnecessary mass production of large orders for the sole reason of lowering costs (with no intention of selling them profitably).
  • Even more wasteful disposal of excess stock and poor environmental stewardship as a result.
  • Product design, development and manufacturing based purely on profits rather than value for customers.

Finding Inspiration

In order to make clothing that consumers want to wear, our founders continue to involve themselves at every step of the production process. And they have discovered something inspiring. Every day, they enconter workers and tradespersons who have a true passion for the products they are manufacturing. Working alongside them and through their interactions, they learned the richness of making products that are not for mass production or mass consumption. These realizations eventually became the basis for the idea of "clothing that lasts for a decade", from which 10YC took it’s name.

We have been fortunate enough to have been featured and supported by the publications below:

Risks and challenges

10YC has been operating as a small startup for more than 1 year now. While it has been successful, we have also experienced many risks and challenges along the way.

For example, we have continuously been talking to our customers and designing our garments based on what we believe represents our vision. However we continuously face the risk of being unable to develop the right product for our target market. We make it a priority as team to ensure that we are listening to our customers and maintain an awareness for the global market as well during our campaign.

Another risk we face is unforseen production delays and issues on during the manufacturing process. Last year, we had a close call when one of our knitting machines malfunctioned during a small production run. We were able to persevere and work with our manufacturers to resolve the issue, and we did not face any major delay. We credit our experience and relationships with our manufacturers in helping us to handle the challenges of manufacturing our garments.

One example of a challenge we have faced is overseeing the quality and consistency of the production process, despite being located in a different geographic region. We also challenge ourselves to source and utilize the best materials in our product at all times (no substitutes). As we intend to expand globally, we have dedicated ourselves to researching and understanding the various issues related to shipping in order to ensure that we meet our commitments to our backers.

As a team, we are humbled at the opportunity to offer our new product (The 10YC Tee) to a global market. Our combined experience in the fashion and textile manufacturing industry continues to provide us with valuable insights into product design and marketing, as well as dealing with the many risks and challenges of growing a new apparel company.
