I've had people ask for it, and I've always wanted to do it. So finally, it's time. My first book!
Since I want to keep my independence, and pick the projects that I think reflect who I am as a decorator, I've decided to self publish. That's where Kickstarter comes in - I can make cakes, and write tutorials, but I will need help getting the books printed and distributed.
So what's in the book?
The book will feature eleven main projects and five mini projects ranging from a beginner level to an upper intermediate level. It will focus on cute and whimsical designs, and will have a very detailed step by step approach. It will also have plenty of pictures to help you along.
In addition, the book will contain templates for the projects where applicable, a guide to the tools I use, and some basic recipes. I'll also host a website to support the book, with any updates, additional materials and some recipe calculators.
What's really in the book? Show me pictures!
Here's a sample of one of the pages, showing some of the steps in the Noah's Ark project.
Here's a finished project, the Woodland Fairy. The fairy is a sugar figurine, while the tree stump is cake.
Another sample page, showing how to make a present box and some cute ducks.
What else are you making?
In addition to the printed book, I'd also like to provide a PDF version for those of you who want to save on shipping costs.
To further reward my backers, I'll also be producing some extra promotional items.
There will be the limited edition shopping bag shown below, with a cute picture featuring projects from my book.
I'll also be making a 2GB custom USB thumb drive, featuring my signature teddy bear.
Why do you need my help?
I've basically finished writing the book, and it was a long effort with many sleepless nights. I need backing to be able to focus on putting the final polish on the book, and to pay the up front costs for all the printing of the book and the production of the USB drive and bag.
Who are you anyway?
My name is Sharon Wee, I've been cake decorating full time for a few years, and part time for longer. I've sold cakes for birthdays, weddings, and other occasions, but these days I prefer to focus on teaching. I've been lucky enough to teach classes in Sydney at home, and also at various cities around the world. And for those of you who can't make it to class in person, I create online PDF tutorials to show step by step techniques in creating various projects. I also have filmed two videos with Craftsy showing a castle cake and animal figurines.
Risks and challenges
Since I'm producing a book, bag and USB drive, I need to involve external suppliers. So there's a risk of poor quality or they may not even be finished in the agreed time. I'll definitely ensure the product is up to my personal standards of quality, and if any of the items are delayed, I'll send updates to keep you in the loop so you're not left waiting.
It's also my first book, so writing it has been a challenge. I'll need to get it edited and hope this is all done on time, without any major rewrites required!
For anyone who gets a reward that relies on me being available, such as dinner or a Skype call, I'll do my best to work with you to arrange a suitable time. However my schedule is very busy this year, so we may need to work together to find a date that works for both of us.
And finally, if somehow this is way more popular than expected, it might just take while to send everything out!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
