HEADLINERS >>> An Electronic Dance Music Pop-Culture Magical-Realism Comedy Series!
Music today is an industry. Artists are a commodity, not a community. We focus on getting attention rather than on creating value.
This makes it impossible to feel any sort of cultural movement connected with music being made today.
Where can we go to find a movement, a culture, a place where performances and events are co-creations between artists, dancers, musicians, and even nature? Where can we go to feel like a participant, not just a customer in the music industry?
It’s where Madonna finds her dance moves, where Skrillex found dubstep, and where high fashion finds out what’s hip – the Underground.
And if John Lennon came back for a day and asked what the heart of today’s music culture is all about, this is where we would take him.
HEADLINERS is a comedy show about the Underground Bass Music Culture in the midst of a radical shift – Electronic Dance Music’s rising popularity!
A reality-based episodic series, HEADLINERS revolves around a couple of hilarious and controversial EDM producers, Zapper and Datgirl, as they wrestle with taking their DJ careers from underground to mainstream.
With a wild cast of festival-goers, promoters, ravers, agents, and dancefloor bassheads, the pair navigate through renegade rave parties, debaucherous festivals and hip clubs and do whatever it takes to meet the promoter and be the next headliners. If you thought Party Politics in the Senate was bad – try getting a Headlining timeslot at a festival!
Through zany real-life touring situations, HEADLINERS shows the Electronic Dance Music and Visionary Art world in all its beautiful and hilariously conflicting ideologies, exploring issues that today’s self-made self-promoting artist has to deal with, and reflecting the lives of the young festival-hopping trendy freaks who live for the weekends, and whose lives have transformed into a culture that, up until now, no one has really known about.
The unique storylines also reach out to incorporate topics like the plight of honey bees, the mythological nature of technology, and today’s dominant paradigm of fame at all costs.
In each half-hour episode, the characters experience a basic conflict between the passion of the music and love of community versus the ego’s drive for fame and the need for more contests, more blogs, more viral videos, more commercials, more sponsorship, and more f^%#& Likes!
After their hair-brained schemes end in hilarious mishaps, the characters return back to why they do this in the first place:
The magic of passion outweighs the fleeting thrills of fame.
Despite the Dancefloor Disasters, the Soundsystem Power Failures, the Douchebag Security, the Egotistical DJs, the Wasted Managers, the Shady Promoters, the Long Nights and Short Sets, the Planes, Trains and Scooter rides with a dude named “Crash” … in the end, something always keeps them coming back for more. Is it the music? The people? The magic? Is it a fan’s voice that says “keep on doing what you are doing”? Or the promise that the next show will be that Special One!
The Journey So Far
We have already produced this 11-minute “pilot”, our first incarnation of HEADLINERS that was made without a budget and a crew. In our next half-hour episode, we will be introducing new characters and employing new story-telling techniques like character monologues, sketches, and a music video ending, to explore what forms the show will take on. Though we are raising money to shoot one more episode, there are actually six more written that will be made one way or another, whether we get picked up by a network, sponsored by a DJ gear company or music label, or continue selling totebags to our grandparents.
So when you invest in HEADLINERS, you are investing in a full season of entertainment, complete with music videos and original tunes. Any bit of overflow we may raise in this campaign will go towards making another episode happen – even shooting two at once if we get the funding!
The main costs of this episode break down to the equipment rental, lights, two cameras, and audio recording gear, venue rental to “throw a party”, and the costs of hiring a skilled director of photography and camera crew.In addition, we have travel to contend with, as our show is filmed in LA, San Francisco, and various outdoor festival venues.
Every episode has an original score of unreleased tracks by up-and-coming music producers and cameos by DJs and artists, and ends with a segment of a music video. Full-length tracks and music videos made for the show will be featured as extra compilation materials for our fans. In an effort to capture the wide-range of EDM, we will be filming a completely different type of party scene in each episode – a daytime poolside House party, a Trap event, an outdoor PsyTrance festival, an underground Minimal Tech club– as many subcultures and genres a we know exist!

Risks and challenges
We have already experienced challenges in filming our first teaser episode, namely a few camera break-downs resulting from not having enough equipment. We hope that using more of a variety of cameras and having a budget for rentals will keep us from the technical issues we had before.
We have also learned how to manage a multi-city shoot schedule better.
The biggest scheduling challenge we have is that many DJs/Artists in the show are constantly on tour, and we purposely have to wait until festival season is over in order to get as many people as we can on the team.
We also want to film at festivals and parties without intruding on people’s good time. Ideally we hope to strike a delicate balance with festival promoters, finding locations and scenes to shoot at real parties, to give an authentic feel to the show, and to leave room for spontaneous characters to shine.
Filming a half-hour show and an accompanying music video with a small budget will require extreme organization and support, and a great team committed to achieving the end result at all costs. While we anticipate the chaos, having a crew of people whose day jobs are actually throwing huge parties in the desert actually makes us feel semi-prepared.
