We've spent almost three years developing fully reusable model rocket engines that are safe, affordable, and use a non-toxic water soluble propellant you can easily make at home.

How do they work?
Easy Flying Options
Does all this sound super exciting, but you've never done model rocketry before? Or do you like model rocketry but dislike the hassle of balancing rockets, setting up launch pads, and correctly timing parachute delays? Have no fear!
During the development of the XR18 and the XR29 we realized we had a need for a simple yet fun rocket that was cheap, easy to build, quick to get ready, and hard to get wrong so we designed the Firebird 18 (for 18mm engines) and Firebird 29 (for 29mm engines) to serve just that purpose!
With no launch pad needed and an inherently stable high drag design that utilizes spin recover for visual range flights these rockets are all fun and no hassle!
Creating our fully reusable model rocket engines was a labor of love that took almost three years, spanned three states, included hundreds of engine tests, had countless sleepless nights, and cost thousands of dollars to pull off, but it was worth it to us.
Both the XR18 and XR29 started off as PVC analogs of the intended final designs. Once the baseline designs and concepts were proven with PVC proof of concept prototypes we transitioned to hand crafted aluminum prototypes that were refined through extensive testing and iteration until we arrived at the final production intent designs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How will I learn how to fill these engines safely?
A: We will provide a complete set of resources including video tutorials for you to see how to safely fill the engines through the XAIR Community portal when you receive your XAIR engine.
Q: Will I need anything other than what is included with the rewards to fill my engines?
A: A few small items will be required to fill your engines that are not included in the rewards such as the ingredients (which can be easily found at your local grocery and hardware store or on Amazon), a small pot, a wooden spoon or non stick spatula, a small digital scale, and small paper, plastic, or foam cups for weighing the ingredients in.
Q: Is there somewhere I can go right now to see what its like making the propellant so I know if its something I can do?
A: Yes, it is a fairly simple process and there are a number of videos that detail how its done on YouTube. Here is one from one of our favorite content creators on YouTube. The specific formula and process used in an XAIR engine will be provided to you in the XAIR Community portal on our website when you receive your engine.
Q: Why would I do this rather than a completely DIY engine built out of PVC pipe components like I've seen on YouTube?
A: The time it takes to build engines from scratch can be rather lengthy and at the end of the day they're completely disposable (so more expensive in the long run), significantly more dangerous (PVC engines can blow up launching sharp pieces of plastic long distances if built incorrectly), and they won't fit in model rockets of any size nor do they tend to have known performance characteristics like an XAIR reusable engine so its hard to predict how high they'll fly/where they'll go.
Q: Why do you need Kickstarter to make this project possible?
A: Because we need a platform that can help us find people that share our passion and want to help share reusable model rocket engines with the world. We also knew we needed to produce the components for our engines in a quantity of at least 100 units to be able to offer them at a reasonable price to our patrons and Kickstarter provides a unique opportunity to set that level so that we can make sure it happens affordably.
Q: Can I fly these engines at a model rocketry event?
A: Yes! XAIR's reusable engines are Tripoli Research Code compliant but you can only fly them at Tripoli events if you are a Level 2 member and use dextrose, sorbitol ,or erythritoland based sugar propellant rather than table sugar. NAR does not allow "non-certified engines" of any kind at their events. If you are interested in advancing this far in the hobby we recommend locating your nearest Tripoli club and they should be more than happy to get you all the way through Level 2 so that you can fly your rockets with an XAIR engine at their events.
Q: Are these legal in all states?
A: It is the responsibility of the end user to check their local laws to make sure they can make and fly sugar propellant engines and if you are unsure of the legality in your area we recommend getting in touch with the nearest Tripoli Rocketry club so that they can put you in touch with local research motor builders who should already be familiar with the local rules and regulations.
Q: Who is responsible for the proper and safe use of an XAIR engine or rocket kit?
A: While XAIR will always strive to promote the best safety practices and responsible practices for use that we are aware of it is ultimately and end user filled product and as such the user accepts all responsibility for its safe, legal, and responsible use and XAIR can not be help accountable for any kind of miss use. Always be sure you are being safe and responsible while using an XAIR engine.
Q: Can children buy/use these engines?
A: No, XAIR engines are not toys and are only to be purchased by adults 18 and older. By buying our engines you are verifying that you are at least 18 years of age. If you have a minor in your family who you would like to include in this wonderful hobby we recommend doing it with them or loading it yourself and launching it with them, but ultimately it is up to the buyer to use them responsibly and XAIR cannot control what is done with its products once purchased and as such is not to be help responsible for miss use or sale to a minor which is prohibited by the consumer products safety commission.

There is always the risk of delays and unexpected changes in cost, but our background is in manufacturing and we have significant experience in designing for manufacturability. We already have quotes from our suppliers for the quantity of product we used to set our funding goal and a partner for rocket kit production that has over 30 years of experience in model rocket kit production being one of the largest model rocket kit producers in the country so we are confident we can deliver our products as detailed in the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
