The purpose of this documentary is to tell the story of the amazing organization & people. Life is short so "Live and Love It Up!"

Our Goal - We are a documentary film crew creating an inspiring film about a community supported, not-for-profit organization called Ride-a-Wave (RAW for short). We want to take our local documentary to the next level. We are seeking financial support to finish the film and enter it into the film festival circuit. This project is truly a labor of love and we are counting on your support.

About Ride-A-Wave - Since 1998, RAW has been hosting one-day camps for children with disabilities in Santa Cruz and Malibu, California. Their mission is to help kids experience a safe, fun-filled day at the beach, whether they are physically, developmentally or economically challenged. The program depends on fundraising and equipment donated by the community. This allows hundreds of children to participate at no cost. World-class surfers say that their days at RAW are the best waves they catch all year. At the end of the day, parents of kids with disabilities often say that this is the best day their child has ever had.

About the Kids - Many of RAW’s participants are kids you would not expect to see on a surfboard, bodyboard, or kayak. These are kids whose lives are defined by impairments, such as cerebral palsy, autism, cancer, blindness, Down syndrome and other challenges. RAW helps these children break through barriers. It helps them say, “Yes, we can do this.”

The Story - In 1990, Danny Cortazzo, a competitive surfer and lifeguard, was hit by a car while riding his bike in Australia. Eyewitnesses were amazed that he survived the accident. Doctors said that he was lucky not to be paralyzed. During his recovery, he missed the water and realized what a powerful force the ocean was in his life. Once healthy, his mission became to help people with disabilities who had no access to the ocean. Danny soon realized his dream and formed RAW with several of his close friends.

The documentary shows how RAW has evolved into an organization that provides a safe, life-changing experience for both the volunteers and the participants. The film highlights several young people who overcome challenges to put on a wetsuit and enjoy a day on the water. Also, it shows how it is made possible by the dedicated volunteers and the evolution of innovative surfing equipment specifically designed for RAW.

This is a story about courageous kids who leave the safety of their parent’s arms, put on a wetsuit, paddle far out, and catch waves with experienced surfers. This is a story about sharing stoke, serving others, taking chances and giving back. RAW is an example of what happens when individuals and communities dream big.

The Purpose - The purpose of this film is to tell the story of this amazing organization. It challenges beliefs about kids with disabilities and their capabilities. It shows the ‘Aloha Spirit’ and a bigger picture of California surfers – a picture that most people have never seen. Our hope is that this film inspires others to volunteer and find ways to make a difference in their own communities.
