What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

Pixelmash: Easily create pixel art from photos, simple sketches, or from scratch.
Pixelmash is our Mac/PC software for creating pixel art from photos, simple sketches, or from scratch. Its tools have been specially designed to make the process of making pixel art much quicker and more intuitive than with traditional software.

Convert photos directly into iconic pixel art.
You can easily import a photo of anything, erase unwanted background elements, divide it into layers, then adjust the resolution and pixel art effects until you get exactly the look you want. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can turn a mundane object into bright, iconic video game art.

Also great for starting from a simple sketch.
Many of the same tools that make converting photos into pixel art so easy also work great for painting over sketches using our brush tool, then applying the same handy resolution adjustments and layer effects.

Anyone can use Pixelmash.
You don't have to be a pixel art pro to make something awesome with Pixelmash - our unique resolution-independent approach and intuitive layer effects make it possible for anyone to use.

It's already functional, but we need your help.
You don't have to worry about whether or not we can make what we're talking about - Pixelmash already exists as a fully-functional alpha that we’ve been using internally for our indie game projects. However, we need your help to give us the resources to add finishing touches, as well as your suggestions, to turn it into a fully-releasable product!

Start using the alpha right away and help guide development. As soon as the project is funded and the crowdfunding campaign completes, you’ll get access to start using the fully-functional alpha build right away (assuming you’ve donated at a level that includes that reward, which is every level but the very lowest). You’ll also get access to give us feedback and suggestions to help guide the development of Pixelmash!

Stretch goal: vector drawing tools ($100K). As a stretch goal, if we reach over $100,000 in funding we’ll also add vector drawing tools to Pixelmash, allowing for a true resolution-independent pixel art workflow!

We look forward to hearing your feedback.
We’re excited to bring you Pixelmash, but we’re especially excited for the features and ideas that we haven’t even thought of yet, that we’ll learn from you as you start using the alpha build and give us suggestions and feedback!

Risks and challenges

We've been making software for more than 13 years now, so we have a lot of experience with releasing similar software products (including CameraBag for Mac/PC, which Apple awarded the 2nd place Mac App of the Year in 2012). Pixelmash already exists as a fully-functioning alpha as seen in the video, so the hurdle to creating something functional and useful has already been crossed. It's really just a matter of refining and adding features according to your feedback.

Of course, we won't be able to implement all of the suggestions everybody has exactly how each person wants it, that would be impossible (and result in terrible software, frankly). We'll do our best to use our expertise to bring it all together in the most elegant form possible.

We've set June as our target for completing release version 1.0. This is largely irrelevant to our backers, as you'll be receiving builds beginning at the successful completion of the crowdfunding campaign with updates through to release. The June deadline is more about when we decide to call it version 1.0 and release Pixelmash for sale to the general public.

If we reach our stretch goal, the vector tools may take more time but we'll release what we can in beta builds along the way as soon as is practically possible. It's also possible we'll be able to have vector tools in by June. We'll definitely keep you posted.
