Updates:

The King is dying. He has no living heir.

The nobles of the four great houses jockey to succeed him. Is it altruism or lust for power that stirs these nobles to proffer themselves?

Meanwhile, three powerful guilds each see a chance to build a new era. They lurk in the shadows, planning timely coups to gain control of the realm.

Indeed, many of the nobles hold secret positions within those guilds. These allegiances no doubt provide lucrative opportunities. The question to be answered is: will the nobles put family first, or strike out to make their own futures?

King's Favor is a semi-cooperative game set in an aristocratic world. You play a noble with two conflicting allegiances: to your house and to your guild. Can you cooperate with either team long enough to secure victory?

This game can handle a large group of players. Perhaps extra people showed up for game night, or you want something to keep the peace on that cabin trip with the family. The basic rules are easy enough to teach to most non-gamers, and dedicated gamers will enjoy the depth of the advanced rules.

King's Favor has been in development for over a year now. All of the art and gameplay is in the final stages. I'm Kickstarting now to print a run of quality copies with Panda Games Manufacturing.

How to Play

At the core, King's Favor is an easy game to play:

  • Each round, every player secretly chooses one of four actions to play. Then, everyone reveals simultaneously.
  • Starting from the First Player, everyone takes their turn and does their action.
  • Finally, the King's health decreases and a new round begins.

There is a bit more to it, though. Players also have special character abilities, study cards that add even more abilities, and guild roles that give them a once-per-game surprise advantage.

Players may play only one study card per turn. However, abilities from study cards in play can often be used at any time, as can guild cards and character abilities.

Plus, players can trade resources on their turns!

All of this adds up to some intense rounds. What game-changing combos are your opponents sitting on?

You may notice that a few things are missing from the donut. Here are a few of them: video production, marketing, and graphic design.

Why?

Because you shouldn't be paying for my marketing. For the rest, I'm personally doing as much of the work as possible. Using free alternatives where practicable means more bang for your buck.

Similarly, I do not expect to profit at minimum funding. I'll likely come out at a net loss, financially.

This is about bringing a passion project to the world. Don't worry; if we overfund, I'll find a way to take a small cut.

So what's the Pre-Kickstarter bit?

This represents the estimated costs to bring the game this far. Travel, materials, some out-sourced labor, etc. For a year of development, that is an incredibly miniscule figure. I consider those costs to be out-of-pocket expenses and show them here for completeness.

Patrick Scott is the designer behind King's Favor. He was inspired by George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (as well as its HBO adaptation, Game of Thrones), and other modern fictions of aristocratic worlds. The game has changed dramatically from the early iterations. Still, he strove to maintain large-group play, multiple victory conditions, and light social deduction gameplay.

Ami Leshner is the lead illustrator on the project. She has brought incredible quality and professionalism to the project. When she joined the team, she immediately set to work establishing continuity between the art direction and graphic design. The quality of her artistic contributions speaks for itself. (Find more of her stuff at Occapocalypse!)

Dan Zhang is the assistant illustrator on the project, though he initially joined the project as the primary illustrator. From early on, he helped define the art direction and contributed to the world-building. When the time he could devote to the project dwindled, he was the driving force behind bringing on Ami.

Amit Sharma is the lead design consultant. Though an informal team member, he has been contributing to the project from day one. Whether suffering through another play test, cracking the whip of motivation, or advising on the balance of mechanics, his presence has been instrumental in bringing this project to where it is.

Shout-out to the 60+ testers and gamers that have provided invaluable feedback throughout the process. You all rock.

For grace under repeated (and repeated) abuse, special thanks to: Zach, Eli, Michael, Emilia, Cameron, Mitch, Dan, Jim, and Mark.

It can be risky to back a project without having interacted with the final product. I've backed at least 50 projects, myself, so I understand that. Some of those projects turned into stellar products, and some have been variously disappointing.

I want this project to be stellar. I want you to be confident about this game. To that end, I've provided the rules and print-and-play files (see "The Game" section for the download links). If that's not enough, I'm also giving you a guarantee:

If, after the project finishes, you decide you don't want your copy of the game for any reason, I will refund its cost to you.

What are you waiting for? Check out the rewards to the right, and pledge at your favorite tier!

Risks and challenges

I have bad news and good news.

The bad:

• Production and shipping often takes 6 - 9 months for board games. Plus, there will always be delays, whether it is because of customs, weather, or simple miscommunication.
• This is my first time professionally publishing a board game (though I've designed several board games and published mobile apps).
• Funding for this type of project often gets very convoluted, with many add-ons and pledge adjustments.

The good:

• A full 12 months are slated for production, so the risk of delays and late delivery is carefully mitigated.
• The main development of the game is complete. Just doing final testing (you can help—try out the print & play!).
• The art for the base components is complete.
• I'm ready to "go to press," except for changes from great backer feedback.
• I'm active in a community of fellow game developers, chock full of experience and advice in case of unexpected trouble.
• The pledge rewards are streamlined and few in number. I'm focused on making the game. International? Extra shipping is accounted for. Donation tiers? Nope. Long stacks of reward levels? Won't find them on this page! (Want more paraphernalia and add-ons? Keep an eye out; there might be a separate mini-campaign for a few days)

Most importantly, I am passionate about this game. I want this game to get into your hands. I have already labored for a year bringing it this far. If you fund this, I will finish the job.
