We’re raising funds to release Scrimshander’s new album/vinyl debut Scrimshander, and to produce the video for the album’s first single “Forest Fire”.
Who We Are
A scrimshander is a maker of scrimshaw, the archaic marine art of engraving on bones, teeth and tusks that began on whaling ships in the 18th century. Scrimshander is also a Portland, Oregon two-man band that began two years ago in a bedroom. After the dissolution of their folk-rock powerhouse, Bark Hide and Horn, Peter Valois and Andy Furgeson started writing and recording new songs together. Folky song skeletons grew flesh through the recording process, fattened up by drum machines, synths, percussion, strings and vocal layers. Gradually, Scrimshander learned to play their songs live, juggling instruments and triggering electronics.
Valois and Furgeson have honed their collaboration into a 12-song self-titled album, due out by September 2012. From its haunting opening notes to its noisiest explosions, the record showcases a band as focused on solid folk-pop songwriting as it is on meticulous production. Story songs about animals and criminals give way to moments of confessional vulnerability. As chaos swallows beauty, Scrimshander’s dark impulses devour its gentle, folky roots.
The Single and Video
“Forest Fire” is the first track and lead single off of Scrimshander. Furgeson’s folky guitar and storyteller drawl swell until Valois’ bass and beats kick in. Believing that the only way to move forward is to destroy the past, a guilty narrator confesses to burning his homeland. Director Tony Candelaria has developed an animated narrative for the song, visually expanding on Scrimshander's lyrics. “Forest Fire” introduces Scrimshander as a kind but brooding beast. Belly & Bones, known for their combination of sweet, joyful characters and dark, twisted themes aim to tame this beast, if only for a moment, then set it free on screen for all to enjoy!
Belly & Bones
Tony Candelaria and Stef Choi are two artists who run Belly & Bones, a design boutique here in Portland, OR. Belly & Bones has been a platform to showcase past projects and unveil new collaborations in art. Both have established backgrounds in film and television, such as Stef's character designs in animation (Power Puff Girls, Dexter's Lab, Coraline) to Tony's array of puppets and creatures in movies (David Lynch's Inland Empire, Coraline, Paranorman.) There are no bounds to the type of creations they are capable of. They have found a wonderful balance working together to fuel their inspiration and allow for new creations to unfold!
The Rest of Us
This project is being led by producer Phoebe Owens. And, this Kickstarter project wouldn't exist without the video directing, shooting, and editing of the incredibly talented Montea Robinson.
