A visionary three-part circus for the stage.
The Tarocco Piemontese was a 15th century Italian card game, consisting of four suits (much like our modern playing cards) and twenty two trump cards, numbered 0-21. Modern Tarot evolved out of Renaissance decks such as this, and we still see the same strange characters among its own trump cards; the Magician, the Lovers, Death, the Hanged Man, etc.
With Card 0 (the Fool) as our enigmatic guide, Tarocco will take its viewers through 21 dreamlike acts designed by some of Asheville's most visionary performers, dancers, acrobats, puppeteers, artists, costumers, maskmakers, and builders.
Tarocco will be performed in Asheville's legendary Masonic Temple, and will be split up into three two-hour shows: Part 1 (Cards 1-7) debuts in January of 2014, Part 2 (Cards 8-14) in March, and Part 3 (Cards 15-21) in May. Each part will be stylistically and thematically unique, while still weaving its chapter of the Fool's journey into the other two, creating a sort of grand, surreal fairy tale to delight audience's senses and test their credulity.
Tarocco is the premiere project of the brand new Fox & Beggar Theater, a group founded on collaboration and focused on folk tales, dreams, and other elements of the fantastic.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I'm attempting to raise $15,000 to produce Tarocco; half of it from the support of local businesses and sponsors, the other half through crowdsourcing (hey, that's you!). This money will go toward venue rental, equipment rental, supplies and materials, performers, musicians, artists, designers, costumes, props, lighting and sound technicians, promotion, and a thousand other little costs that often get overlooked.
If I'm unable to hit this budget, I'm going to have to do things I'd rather not: beg artists to work for free, compromise massively on my vision, or take out massive loans from scary banks to do it. I really, really, really need your help.
$10 = 2 beers at a bar. Alternatively, $10 = a wonderful Tarocco donation!
Six months from now, you probably won't remember two beers...but perhaps you'll be sitting in a dark, hushed theater, waiting for the curtain to rise, and remember that you helped make it come to life.
