About this project

UPDATE

New Stretch Goal: $5500

When the campaign reaches $5500, I can print even more books at a higher quality! As a thank you, I will complete Tarot Tump VI, The Lovers.

It will be printed like the others and a card will be sent to every backer who pledged 20$ and over. Thank you thank you thank you.

Stretch Goal: $4000

When the campaign reaches $4000 Issue #1 and Issue #2 will get a paper upgrade. The interior pages will go from 85# medium weight matte finish paper to105# heavy weight matte finish paper. The covers will go from 105# heavy weight matte with a gloss finish to #135 heavy weight matte with a gloss finis. I thought about maybe doing UV coating and would love to hear opinions on that!

As a thank you for sharing the project and reaching this new goal everyone who pledges $20 and up will get a 3.5" x 5.75" Ace of Disks tarot card. Here is a photo of the work in progress:

Both will be completed in August, prepped and shipped in late September, early October.

Bright Spiral is an 8" x 8" 24-page black and white comic with a color cover created, written, drawn and toiled over by Chris Judge. Each page is meticulously hand rendered on paper. Issue 1 is complete and as of this writing I have 2 more pages to draw to call issue 2 complete. All I need now is your help to print these issues and get them to you!

What is it?

Bright Spiral is an independent comic about initiation.

The first issue revolves around the brutal initiation of a black magician who must venture into hell in order to retrieve a mysterious object of great importance that will accelerate his rise within the order. Will it be the key to his freedom or something to chain him further?

The second issue begins the story of a yogi who must climb a mountain after his master dies. Countless lives have landed him in this same situation. Will this be the one where he finally makes it up the mountain? What revelation awaits him there?

What really controls our minds, instincts and impulses? How can we break free of this control? And what happens when we do? What does it mean to 'save yourself'? It's far messier and more human than putting on a cape and fighting crime. It can mean confronting terrifying internal demons and having the wherewithal and tools to transform them into inspiration.

Some choose initiation over and over again constantly jumping the gap and grabbing for more insight and more awareness. Many go mad, but others turn out ok! And they walk back down the mountain as an adept able to change whatever they see fit.

All stories interact, even mine and yours; there is no getting around that. This is only the beginning. I intend to keep telling this story until it's no longer possible for me to hold a pen.

THE GOAL: $3000 to print 2, 24-page comics available at comic shops and conventions by the last quarter of 2014. If this campaign ends at even $1 short of the goal, then I get nothing.

What I have: 24 pages and a color cover completed for issue #1, and 22 pages completed for issue #2, a website at brightspiralcomic.com and hundreds of pages worth of other stories to tell in the future.

The Book: Book interior will be printed on superior 85 lb medium weight matte coated paper. The covers will be printed on 105 lb Heavy weight gloss coated paper with a gloss finish. This results in a durable book that can withstand a lot of handling while still maintaining that ever-important floppy-comic-feel.

Where does the money go?  $2000 goes to printing costs for both Issue #1 and Issue #2, the remaining $1000 goes to shipping out the rewards and fees.

Brace yourself for a speedy ascension!

Malas:

I handcrafted each mala using a time-intensive double-strand method for extra durability. Pass that puppy through your fingers a million times and it won't break! They are extremely limited, as in each is one-of-a-kind.

Upper Left: 108 count Anahaw (Palm Seed) mala with carnelian memory beads and Mahogany seed guru bead.  Upper Right: 109 count Lava Stone mala with red coral memory beads and aquamarine/amber guru beads. Lower Left: 111 count Deer Bone mala with aventurine memory beads and burmese jade guru bead.  Lower Right: 111 count Aventurine mala with mammoth fossil guru bead.

11" x 11" archival art prints:

These are printed on Smooth Fineart Moab Entrada Bright White (290gsm) using archival inks.  I wanted to offer an art print that would last as long as I do, and here it is.

Upper Left: Kaalsarpa Nagapash Yantram, used as a focus during tantric practices to undo the "snake bite": an unfortunate planetary configuration leading to recurring bad luck and ill health.

Upper Right: Twin Corpse Gods Sing Forth the God of Insects, A powerful focus for communicating with non-human intelligence and appealing to the insect overmind.

Bottom: Tracing Board of the Atrophamus Zelator Grade within the Sanctum of the White Worm with Critical Modifications by the Protagonist, The white worm must be stopped.

Tarot:

Each 3.5" x 5.75" Tarot card is printed on Premium 310 gsm linen finish card stock.  These images are the results of my personal and exhaustive research and attempt to synthesize both Western and Eastern occult and mystical symbolism, and plug it back in to my favorite novel method of divination. I also like to draw the perdy pictures. The 4-card set includes: The Magician, Alchemy, The Devil, and The Hanged Man.

When I was younger I suffered bouts of unidentifiable physical pain, causing me to withdrawal and eventually go mad. It seemed that no one I encountered, doctors, friends, etc were equipped to help me out of my pit.

I turned inward, started reading, studying, practicing. I began with classical Western occultism: Golden Dawn, Crowley, et al, which led me to Yoga and Tantra with their emphasis on concentration and maintaining the body through control of the breath and therefore the mind. These studies led me to Tai-Chi and Qi-gong which slowly taught me how to move again, with little pain. This led me, ultimately, to obtaining a bachelor's of science in kinesiology.

Now that I'm older, not wiser, I understand the intricate connections between all of these things, and I dare say: their elegant confluence which, when overlaid, may represent something akin to a 'reality' in Nature.

I've been lucky (or fated (?)) with many wonderful teachers who only prodded my autodidactic nature and deepened my undisciplined meditations.

Through all my hard study I gradually developed the tools to claw my way back from the brink and rebuild myself how I saw fit, I'm still doing this. I will always be doing this.

My struggles, as well as the struggles I write, are also yours. No one is exempt from having to walk through chapel perilous at some point, and there passing maybe several dark nights of the soul. Perhaps my work will offer some solace in someone's time of need. At the very least it will be an indication that, no matter how strange things get, someone else has gone through it, and someone else made it to the other end.

The Catalyst for Bright Spiral:

I recognize that the stories coming out of me are my method for synthesizing and processing everything I've studied and practice.

Comics have been a type of magic since the days of Mayan codices and the day counters that used them to predict the future. The creation of a piece of sequential art requires intense, prolonged concentration, and visualization skills. Not only that but this type of work quickly becomes a method for not only improving this particular set of skills, but also for demonstrating that improvement. It's a completely measurable self-error-correcting process.

I've wanted to draw comics for almost my entire life, and at an early age (and thanks to an older sibling) I became attracted to more interesting and offbeat stuff. I've tried to get a book together many times over the years but was stalled when it never turned out 'good enough'.

About three years ago I began an intensive practice that developed in stages. In the beginning I would lie motionless for several hours breathing as deeply and slowly as possible, attempting (and failing) to empty my mind. After a few months I shortened this and added some mantra practice while sitting in padmasana. Then I added trataka (staring) with a piece of black obsidian. Then banishing rituals before and after. After 4 months I had it trimmed down to a three hour practice. It stayed that way for another 3 months.

The practice contracted again and shrunk back down to lying motionless for a couple of hours at a time. I found I couldn't perform the rest anymore, the strain felt too great (on what I don't know). I started having strange visions.

On my birthday, I had some particularly vivid visions and as I got up they assembled themselves into a story. I feverishly jotted down what I saw.  I felt like I had to tell it. And I had to get it out there under other eyes. Like it wasn't just for me.

Now it keeps coming faster than I can draw it and there's no turning back.

Risks and challenges

I've completed Issue 1 and only have 2 pages left to draw and a cover left to paint on Issue 2, the vast majority of the work is complete. All that's left after these few pages is prepping for print and sending them off to the printer. If my computer explodes, I'll borrow another.

I've already decided on a printer, and have a reasonably firm window for turnaround. If there are hangups with this particular printer, I have a backup printer in mind.

Most of the rewards are also complete and in the process of being finalized, printed and manufactured. I foresee no difficulty here, unless there are other printer related hangups.

Shipping everything out may take time, and I ask for your gracious patience while I get my funding, package the orders and ship them to your door.

Thanks for you support. It means the world to me.
