Development Update #11

Hey folks!  Hope you're doing well.

This update will be a shorter one than normal, as I spent almost half of last month being sick, and most of the other half I spent programming, and sort of dealing with the fallout from things regarding the last update (especially on tumblr).  Luckily, most of the negativity has abated, and I'm moving forward with renewed enthusiasm.  

Also, I've begun to run into an issue where some of the scenes I'm working on are spoilers in and of themselves, and I'll have to figure out what I'm going to show and talk about in these updates when the bulk of development for that month has gone into those sorts of scenes--especially towards the end where most of the content will be end of route/end of game imagery.  

So for this month, I'm going to post a couple of old images that I worked on a few months ago, and a bit of music I started writing when I was taking breaks from coding.


Lighting interiors has proved to be a little tricky for me given that I'm trying to go for somewhat realistic lighting in the game, and in a medieval setting, things tended to be rather dark.  In the end I made the decision to stick with the kinds of light sources available at the time, but sort of exaggerate how bright those sources actually were in order to make the scenes visible. 



 I've also started using SketchUp ( a 3d drawing program) for helping me out with scenes where there are several shots from different points of view.  It took me some time to get somewhat proficient with it, but in the long run it'll save me a lot of time by cutting down on the amount of checking and double checking perspectives and placements of certain objects.  It's a cool little program, and the 'make' version of it is free for personal use. (No, I'm not being paid to advertise it, haha, it's just less daunting to use IMO than something like maya or 3dsmax). 

I'm also slowly but steadily improving my animation skills, and I'll share a comparison scene as an example:


There are a handful of scenes in the script which call for some relatively challenging animations, and I fully intend to try to make each one happen.  Can't say for sure if it will always be possible, but I like a challenge, haha.  

And last, a work in progress of the song I've been writing in the past week or so.

 I have May scheduled to be another asset creation month, so I'll try to throw in some non-spoiler scenes into my schedule so you'll have more to look at next time around.  Till then, take care :)

      Oooh, a bedroom! Just kidding! (Sort of.)

      I've loved every piece of music so far, and this excerpt was no exception. Your soundtracks are subtle and lovely at the same time. I want to echo the comments of the person who suggested compiling them (and I presume offering them as an additional product unto themselves).

      Every time I see an update my mood immediately improves and my heart lightens! I am honestly enjoying even just the anticipation waiting for the game!

      Also, take good care of your health. I know I'm not your mother, but multi-vitamins are relatively cheap and very effective. For that matter, so are eggs, which are packed with nutrients. I want to not only very much enjoy this game, but also its successors for years to come!

      The animation was good before, but this is also very good!

      Anyway, as has already been said and then belabored, I'd rather have you take your time and keep producing this level of amazing work than try and rush it.

      I also understand not spoiling the story! Even if all you share is just scenic stuff that's not even the main story-related stuff, I enjoy just looking at that - it's that beautiful!

      I had to re-read the last update to recall what might have upset people. A pushed back release date? I hardly thought anything of it. It's par for the course in development, of anything, but certainly for video games. AAA studios with hundreds of employees push dates all the time. You are one man working alone. I think it's fair and reasonable. No one should be upset that you want to produce a quality game. Also, I fully support the decision NOT to release the game in chunks. That is an incredibly annoying trend that has become increasingly popular, particularly in the adventure / point-and-click / visual novel genre, primarily due to Telltale and a few other companies. No one will feel the full effect of the story if they have to wait weeks or months between episodes - and everyone else, like me, won't play it at all until it would be fully released. So kudos to you, again, for sticking to your guns!

      As for this update. Terrific work, as always. Keep it up! Stick to your vision. It's YOUR game, at the end of the day. People have voluntarily given you money. They are not investors - they do not receive a cut of the profit, and therefore, despite the Tumblr commentary, they do not have any say in what you create. Only that you produce it. Which you clearly are dedicated to doing.

      Gosh, you are so talented!!! The whole project is so atmospheric. The quality is outstanding. When you finish the game, please, don't sell it for too cheap and protect it well. You deserve a good reward for such a hard work!

      Mmm. The beginning was very atmospheric...the heavy bass definitely made me think of ominous surroundings, sort of like your party is beginning the exploration of some voluminous dangerous space (e.g. a cave or ruins). But it also had a different tempo and melody that didn't quite make it environmental music? The pacing made it feel sort of melancholy. And starting at past the :30 mark, it sort of progressed into more story-ish music; kind of like if you were talking to a party member and they were telling you about how their village was burned down as a child...

      I like the music for the most part? Melodically, the initial part is not the most pleasing but that's only about 15 seconds worth (and it still definitely work depending on where you use it). The rest I really enjoyed. I think I'm most curious as what you'll use it for.

      Thanks for this update and the additional information. Things are looking great! I wonder how many of your backers are experienced gamers. I am certainly not. but I am looking forward to this new experience. Keep up the great work and don't let the tiresome, predictable controversies and arguments keep you from realizing your wonderful vision. And if people don't like it, they can make their own damn thing.
