Development Update #7
I sincerely hope you're doing well. I won't pretend that things are business as usual this year, given everything that's been happening and is likely to continue happening. It's important that in times like these we give our best efforts to be available for the people around us who need our help the most, and speak out whenever possible against the hateful people, policies, and actions that 2017 has been plagued with. I understand that people already feel exhausted from seeing more troubling news each and every day, and perhaps you weren't expecting to be reminded of these issues when you checked this update, but it's in the spirit of this project to keep in mind the social issues of the day, so I had to mention it here. I hope you understand.
Now, onto the update.
January was an interesting month for development, as it was more an 'assemblage' month than a creation month. In other words, once I'm done writing each scene, drawing the scenes, and drawing the various sprites and side images, I actually have to put those things together in the engine. This involves a lot of coding!
Since I try to make each scene filled with little changes and subtle interactions between characters, I end up drawing a lot of variations, and each image variation needs to be defined in the game's code. This is obvious to anyone who has worked in ren'py before, but to those who haven't, it ends up looking like this:
Relatively speaking, that's a lot of images just for one scene. I'm sure there are more expedient ways to achieve what I'm going for, but this is the way I've developed on my own, and it works okay for me, haha.
So, January was a slog of coding and testing and fixing code and testing again, etc etc, for hours and hours. It's tedious, it's mind numbing, but it's important, because I'm getting the game ready for the first beta build since the demo so my beta testers can play it and give me feedback.
However, I also found the time to work on more art assets, because one can only code for so long...
So I'll finish up this update by giving a sneak peak into the path of one companion's plotline by showing a couple of the character's you'll see, as well as an important element of his story's setting.
Take care, folks! Thanks for reading.
