We're Alex, Jack and Madeleine, three Engineering Design students out of Stanford University. We're music lovers. We're design fanatics. But mostly, we're stoked to share with you the project we’ve been working on.
We've spent months prototyping and testing our product. We’ve gotten feedback from friends, family, sound professionals, manufacturers, and everyone in between. But there's one group we really care about that we haven't been able to reveal Tiptop to - you. An investment in Tiptop isn't just an investment in a great idea. It's an investment in a team that truly loves what it's doing and wants to bring you an experience unlike anything else. The funding is a logistical necessity; the real reason we're here is to start talking to you about what this project can become.
Great question, dear reader! It's not just terrific sound and a sleek, unique design that sets Tiptop apart. Tiptop is designed to make your life better - without making it more difficult. It pairs seamlessly with all of your Bluetooth devices right out of the box. There are no unnecessary buttons, no mess, no hassle and no worries. It just works. Tiptop uses your unused space as natural sonic amplification using just two things: physics and thoughtful design.
Best of all? It does all this using what you’ve already got: a corner. We’ve been working to optimize physical placement, speaker configuration, power delivery and even surface materials to give you rich, naturally amplified bass and high notes you won’t find anywhere else.
Natural Acoustic Amplification // Tiptop turns your walls and ceiling into amplifiers of rich, deep sound. Placing a source of sound close to the wall naturally maximizes bass frequencies. By placing Tiptop in the corner using the Tiptop Mount, emitted sound waves naturally reflect off of nearby surfaces - the walls and ceiling. These reflected sound waves travel into the room in phase with the direct energy from the speaker. This creates constructive interference between the reflected and emitted waves. Put simply? Truer bass, fuller midranges and crisper highs from an incredibly small package.
We’ve worked with Stanford sound engineers to optimize how Tiptop makes the most of your space. Speaker placement, power delivery, battery life and carefully selected electronic components are just a few of the things we’ve considered throughout Tiptop’s development.
The Tiptop Mount // The Mount is a custom piece of hardware that secures your Tiptop snugly into almost any corner. Although optimized for corners, it looks and works great anywhere - at the junction between two walls, right above your desk, as a nightstand. The possibilities are endless. Just hold your Tiptop close to the Mount and watch it fly into place. With the Mount, Tiptop is always there but never in the way. And when you’re ready to move, Tiptop’s right there with you. Just a scoop of your finger frees the Tiptop from the Mount to go wherever you’re off to next.
We’ve designed the mount for easy installation that’s quick and hassle-free. No wires, no wasted time, no worries. The Mount is engineered to fit even in imperfect corners, and is rated for loads well in excess of Tiptop’s light, sturdy frame. And every corner has studs, so every corner is ready for Tiptop.
Powerful Electronics // When creating Tiptop, we wanted to reimagine what portable sound could do. That meant experimenting with the electronics we chose. Battery life and sound quality are crucial, but we didn’t stop there: ease of charging, user-friendly operation, simple Bluetooth pairing and efficient use of space were just a few other things we focused on. Head to the bottom of this page for some helpful tech specs, but here's a quick look under the hood:
a full-range driver and dedicated tweeter to reproduce crisp, accurate sound
rechargeable lithium-ion battery providing at least 10 hours of continuous playback
- micro USB port for charging and firmware updates
Attention to detail // We’re designers who sweat the small stuff. We believe that true distinction is in the details; that’s why we’ve paid attention to every last detail inside and out of Tiptop.
Versatility // Take it everywhere, mount it anywhere, use it as a shelf, show it off, tuck it away. The possibilities are endless and we can't wait to see how you guys use it!
In order to get Tiptop into your hands, we need your help. In return for your investment, we promise total transparency on our end. Your help will go towards covering the costs of tooling, component acquisition, assembly and distribution. Here's a more specific breakdown (by percent of our goal) of where our funds will be going:
- 52% // components purchasing
- 12% // injection molding hard tooling (body and mount)
- 7.5% // engineering validation testing
- 4% // design validation testing
- 9.5% // wireless certification and FCC approval
- 4% // assembly
- 1% // package design and manufacturing
- 2.5% // distribution
- 7.5% // kickstarter and amazon fees

Risks and challenges
As with any hardware project there are some inherent risks and challenges. We are perfectionists when it comes to the aesthetics and functionality of our product. Our form factor is very unique and will require a lot of tooling design, but we will work incredibly hard with manufacturers to ensure a quality product. We have already spent sleepless nights ensuring that we are in a position to ship a great product on time. Our design validation and engineering validation testing is well underway. If at any point in this crazy adventure you want more information, we're always listening at firstname.lastname@example.org. We will be completely transparent with how we're using your valued investment and are happy to chat anytime.
We have an incredible network of mentors and advisors that we couldn't have come this far without. They will help us through every step of the way to ensure a successful fulfillment to all of our backers!

Yes - the $249 Tiptop + Mount can be shipped anywhere in the world, and we now have an Early Bird option for our supporters overseas! The support from friends abroad has been overwhelming and we look forward to continuing a great relationship with you all - wherever you are.
Tiptop does not currently support daisy-chaining, but this is a goal we have already begun looking into with sound engineers. The potential for an immersive, multi-channel sound experience with multiple Tiptops has been a compelling vision for us since Day One. We hope to incorporate this feature into future versions of the product.
