The Odd Voice Out Mission Statement:
Odd Voice Out is an independent literary press, publishing YA and crossover stories filled with unique characters thrown into extraordinary circumstances. Our genre-bending books take contemporary social and political themes and explore them through a range of historical, futuristic, surreal and supernatural settings. Our diverse young heroes are never your typical leading guys and girls, but are flawed insecure misfits struggling with everything from racial and sexual identity, body issues, disabilities, mental health and worst of all, being teenagers growing up in worlds gone mad.
- To produce and publish 4 books within the first 12 months of opening, to create an income baseline that will allow us to expand into taking on more authors with diverse books in the future.
- To produce and promote anthology publications providing opportunities to young writers (aged 13-19) and diverse adult writers with material for young adults.
- To present our press at the Young Adult Literature Convention 2019 at the Olympia, London in July, fully fledged and ready to take on the world.
- To produce materials such as lesson packs, samplers, extracts and worksheets to be used in classroom, library and youth group settings to encourage creativity and literacy for young people.
- To visit secondary schools and colleges in the UK presenting workshops and demonstrations of writing with a specialism in celebrating diversity of all kinds. We hope to extend this opportunity to youth groups and charities in 2019.
- To set up an online platform to perform 'virtual visits' with International schools, youth groups and charities where young people can engage with the themes and issues of the books, as well as learn the creative discipline of writing from our authors.
What Your Donation Gets You
Alongside regular donations, we are presenting a unique pre-order opportunity for the first two books due for release in Winter 2018: K.C. Finn's Fallow Heart and Kell Cowley's Shrinking Sinking Land. Depending on the level of your pledge, you may choose to receive a digital, paperback or hardback copy of one or both of our brand new releases. You can find out all about these exciting and diverse stories at the end of this section.
As an educator, librarian or youth group leader, you also have the opportunity to include interactive lesson materials with your pledge, which feature reproducible extracts, exercises, quizzes, discussion set-ups and writing challenges to inspire your group and get them talking about diverse issues and the joy of writing.
As a fellow author, Odd Voice Out would love to cross promote for you! Choosing an Author Package allows you to become a featured and recommended writer with at least 2 weeks of dedicated cross-promotion in our newsletter and across our social media sites during 2019.
As an aspiring writer, you can opt to purchase an exclusive one to one to tutorial with either of our award-winning and highly talented writers as part of your pledge. We will read a sample of your work prior to the session and help to guide you towards achieving your writing dreams. These sessions can be delivered via Skype, over the telephone or even in person if you're able to travel to Chester City Centre!
These pre-order books and services prices are guaranteed to be cheaper than those found online and in stores after general release, so grab them whilst you can!
Please remember that any of these pledges can also be bought as gifts for others, just let us know when you donate!

A note about the £600 minimum: Anyone who has ever started a business is sure to know that initial outlay is huge. We have already begun this process, so achieving our funding goal of £600 would just about cover what we're already working on, and begin to fund the future of OVO. So if you see our funding goal is met, please don't think you can't add to it and help us to achieve our dreams!
About Our Books:
One week before the Global Mandatory Hibernation and Flea Wheeler will do anything to avoid a long winter underground. A claustrophobic climate refugee who has been living rough on the flooded streets of Manchester, Flea dreads the day she’ll be forced into shelter so a geoengineering experiment can attempt to reverse the chaotic effects of global warming. Armed with nothing but her stolen umbrella, Flea is on a mission to stay on the surface and somehow survive the extreme weather. It turns out she’s not the only one.
While on the run from the curfew police, Flea falls in with loudmouth vlogger Dylan Moon who believes aliens are controlling the storms and planning a planetary takeover. At first, Flea takes Dil for a conspiracy nut. But after witnessing a series of inexplicable weather events, she realizes there may be some truth to his crazy theories. Is there a dark secret behind the looming climate experiment? Flea has one week left to evade the hibernation order and decide what she truly believes. ‘Shrinking Sinking Land’ is a YA cli-fi story of survival, solidarity and defiance the face of environmental catastrophe for ages 14 and up.

“Suspenseful…sharply well-written…and altogether a success.” Kim Stanley Robinson, New York 2140
When a gruesome murder spree leads to the door of a teenage loser, she is forced to face the reality that something demonic is growing inside her. Fallow Heart is the story of Lorelai Blake, a self-conscious, overweight seventeen-year-old who discovers that a demon has pierced her heart, sparking an incredible transformation. Sleepwalking, fits of rage and impossible strength force Lori to accept that part of her is no longer human. It was hard enough fitting in before, and now that hurtful voice in her head has taken an even more sinister tone. Worse than this, bodies are being discovered. People in Chester are dying and they have only one connection: a nocturnal killer who savages its prey.
Lori seeks help from the D.C., an organisation formed to treat infected children, but even they can’t protect her from the Harvest. When her powers reach their peak, the beast that infected her will return to consume those powers, killing her in the process. She learns the awful truth from a rebellious new friend, Kasabian, who seems to have found a way to avoid this grisly fate. With a detective on her back and a demon in her heart, Lori must master her darkness and follow the murder trail before it reaches the people she loves, and all before the terrifying Harvest sets in. Along the way, her outward insecurities pale in comparison to much bigger problems.
When you’re becoming more demonic by the day, it’s what on the inside that counts.
Fallow Heart is a tale of strength, suspicion and the supernatural for ages fourteen and up.
Risks and challenges
All pledges received for paperbacks, hardbacks copies will be honoured during the eight week period following December 14th, 2018, which is to allow for the Christmas break period. We will endeavour to prioritise international shipping first as these wait times can be longer, then proceed to UK mainland post. Author cross-promotion events will begin in January 2019. If you would like a specific date for promotion, please be sure to mention it during the contact period after December 14th and our team will cater that for you.
Writing one to one sessions will be arranged from January 2019 onwards via direct email booking. Sessions last no more than one hour unless additional time is purchased and writers have the opportunity to submit a sample of up to 3000 words for pre-reading prior to the session.
Ebooks and digital content packs for educators, librarians and youth leaders should be ready to send immediately in the week following December 14th. Please be aware that we may have a large list to get through so it could take up to 7 days to receive your product.
