Worge is a multi-player card game for 2 or more players (although we recommend a group of 4+ for maximum fun) based on creating words that combine the sound / meaning of two different words (aka portmanteaus). Think hangry which combines “hungry” and “angry” or brunch which combines “breakfast” and “lunch”. Worge combines the words “word” and “merge”, it’s our fun way of describing a portmanteau!
The really fun thing is, something you come up with during a round of Worge could become part of your group’s vocabulary for years to come. Some of the worges we came up with during play testing still get dropped in conversations on a regular basis. It's the game that keeps on giving!
So if you like party games, having fun and making up hilarious new words then please help make this game happen. We think you'll really enjoy it.
Playing Worge is simple! The Worge Master draws two Worge Cards from a deck and players have 2 minutes to create worges using the words on the cards. You can create your worges using one word from each card or two words from the same card. If you're an expert Worge Artist (or Worgist!), you could even use three words to create your worge!
When time is up, each player chooses their favorite worge they created and makes up a hilarious (or serious!) definition for it. The Worge Master reads the worges and their definitions out loud, picks their favorite one and the player that came up with it gets a point.
The next person in clockwise order is appointed the new Worge Master and play continues. The person with the most points at the end of the game wins!
A few examples of words that have come up in our play testing include...
- Snazzy Worge Box
- 120 Worge Cards (divided into 6 decks, 160 words per deck)
- 100 Sheet Answer Pad
- 2 Minute Timer
- Rules Booklet
As a Kickstarter "outside the box" exclusive, you'll get a stylish Worge pen with each copy of Worge that you order because you can never find a good pen when you need one.
For shipping in the US, the charge is just $3-$6 depending on how many copies you order as we are bundling the rest of the shipping costs into the pledge. Shipping to the rest of the world is limited to the $25 pledge level, with Canada being $10 and everywhere else being $19.
Shipping higher quantities to countries outside the US tends to get rather expensive rather quickly but if you are interested in 2 or more copies please let me know and I can provide a shipping quote that you can add to your pledge.
I've been a gamer all my life, starting with board games as a kid, transitioning to video games, and then revisiting board games as time went on. I'd say my time is an even split these days between the two, but the in-person group dynamic of a great board game can't be beat. Especially games that lead to fun discussions and laughter!
The idea for Worge came about a couple of years ago when some friends and I were having fun creating portmanteaus (or "worging" as we called it) during conversations. After a couple of months of this, I had the idea that there must be a game somewhere in this thing we were doing as it was a lot of fun.
The main challenge was figuring out words that would work together. I ended up spending around a year compiling a word list and coming up with an algorithm to "match" words that would work well together for the purposes of the game. The result was 6 decks of 20 cards (160 words per deck) that, after play testing, were deemed to be the most fun. Since each deck works on a separate "match", they are color coded as blue deck words won't work well with orange deck words, etc.
Once I got the cards finished, the game rules had to be worked out. After many play tests and a lot of input from testers that involved tweaking the cards, the rules and the answer sheet, the final version of Worge emerged!
If you've made it this far, thanks for looking at the Worge Kickstarter and hopefully supporting the project! The game is complete so I'm simply looking to raise enough money for the minimum order quantity from a manufacturing partner (either Ad Magic or Panda GM) and get Worge out into the world. Which manufacturer we go with will depend on the success of the campaign.
I have created or had a part in creating several physical products (shirts, disc golf discs, bag tags, and more) as well as virtual ones (a couple of apps) that I've sold through websites I've built and in the case of the physical products, fulfilled the orders myself. Most of the products I've created up to this point included a quoting / pre-order / keeping people informed process, similar to the kickstarter model so I'm not stranger to this kind of thing, I've just never done it on this platform.
Long story short, if this kickstarter hits its goal, you will get your game(s) and I'll keep everyone regularly updated!
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter and my first game, which is a challenge in and of itself. Thankfully I've gotten some tips from friends that have had successful campaigns and am able to reach out to them when needed. The game itself is complete, manufacturing quotes in hand and I am prepared to ship games by hand or via a fulfillment partner depending on how successful the campaign is.
That said, there are a few hiccups that could come up:
1) Manufacturing issues. If somehow the manufacturer drops the ball, I will address it immediately to ensure that you get a quality product as soon as possible.
2) As mentioned above, shipping delays could be possible. Both from the manufacturer to me and less likely, from me to your mailbox. If Worge becomes insanely successful with a large number of backers, fulfilling all order at the same time could become an issue. I have scouted out fulfillment partners and would pursue that avenue if the amount of orders became too much for me to cope within a reasonable amount of time.
You will be informed of the status of the project, good or bad, on a regular basis.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
