Raspberry Pi owners can use FUZE BASIC for free and connect to the FUZEBOX for incredible project development. It is even possible to power your Pi using the FUZEBOX.

This is only the tip of the iceberg – You write the code, you make it happen!

As you can imagine, it’s a lot more exciting to interact with the real world than it is to only making things happen on the screen.

We began by creating the FUZE for Raspberry Pi, an education focused personal computer, featuring a very accessible coding environment combined with simple, yet very engaging electronics, complete with content for teachers.

The FUZE has been widely accepted as an ideal resource for teaching coding across all ages and abilities. It has also won many accolades and received incredible press coverage.

In an attempt to keep up with the curriculum, schools are employing the likes of Scratch, an excellent introductory tool into the world of coding for young minds. Fast forward a few years and suddenly these minds are hit with Python, C++ and Java – fully functional and real world languages.

You can see the problem. Some are super-simple, others far more complex.

FUZE BASIC provides the perfect stepping stone between these languages and when partnered with the FUZEBOX, learning a real programming language becomes far more accessible.

We already have a spiral-bound workbook of ten projects, a 200 page reference guide with all the FUZE BASIC commands (at time of print) and examples of how to use them, plus extra lesson plans, additional project worksheets and, on top of all this, there are even more tutorials printed in Linux User & Developer, The MagPi Magazine and PC Pro.

We want to inspire our younger generations to understand and love coding and as we're not all coding whizz-kids we're able to see things from a complete beginners point of view.

For the last 3 years, we’ve been travelling to schools, science and computing fairs across the country, delivering coding workshops with our FUZE platform. Every time, without exception, the feedback received is outstanding.

The original FUZE hardware is not the perfect solution for every classroom or every home but FUZE BASIC, and the pedagogy used to teach it, very much is. This is the reason we are redesigning the hardware so that it makes use of existing devices both at school and at home, along with FUZE BASIC, and uses the same pedagogy.

Quite simply, we have created a very successful teaching (support) concept. It works. However to achieve our goal of inspiring more young people to discover how rewarding coding is, the new FUZEBOX is required to complete the circle. FUZE is hardware, software and implementation.

Hardware is financially draining to design and manufacture and as such we need your support to help us manufacture the FUZEBOX and take it to market.

Computational Thinking, Problem Solving and developing general digital skills that will help students throughout their lives, are life skills and by-products of learning to code.

Coding is a valuable skill even if you don’t think you’re interested in a career as a coder/programmer. If our younger generations don’t understand how computers work, they’ll be on the back foot, whatever career path they choose.

Should you help us reach our Super Stretch goal, the 20% going towards donating free units to schools in need would have to take into account the cost of the bus project.  This would be taken away from the total before the 20% is calculated.

We're not trying to pull a fast one here, we're just making sure we've taken everything into account as those buses don't come cheap!


If you don’t understand customer service then you shouldn’t be in business.

We’ve been dealing directly with our customers for more than thirty years. It doesn’t matter what the problem is, if there is one, then it needs putting right.

We’ve always gone the extra mile, beyond the call of duty, put the customer first or whatever fancy phrase is required to get attention!

Quite simply, we give great customer service because we like to. We operate a simple service ethic. If you look after your customers then they will look after you. It’s very simple and it is shocking that many companies fail to realise it, especially in today’s hyperactive social environment.

We answer our phones, and when I say we, I mean us, the humans here at FUZE, in this office and we don’t hide behind email.

It’s not rocket science is it!

A FUZE customer (John Leonard from Germany – with permission) recently quoted; “Your customer service is simply stunning! After over 40 years in the IT field I can say without doubt that I have never experienced such prompt and good service as with FUZE”

The FUZE platform was originally conceived one afternoon when I thought it would be a good idea to show my kids what computing was like back in my day. So from the attic (loft) I brought down an old BBC Micro and soon had them typing in simple BASIC programs. I was more than a little taken aback at the level of interest and enthusiasm displayed towards what is basically an antique home computer.

It was their reaction that sparked the idea. Could we release a computer today in a similar style? Could we present users with an accessible programming environment like BASIC and would it achieve anything if we did.

The FUZE was the outcome. What began as a foam-board cut-out became a working prototype became a fully realised and professionally produced aluminium cased home computer built around the then newly released Raspberry Pi.

A year of very successful press coverage, awards and outstanding testimonials followed. We then refined the product even more, focused on producing high quality educational content in the form of project cards and tutorials.

Since then around 4,000 FUZE systems have been sold. More than 300 schools are actively using suites of FUZEs to help deliver the new computing curriculum. FUZE is on sale in Maplin, Argos, Toys ‘R’ Us (online), Amazon and a number of education resellers.

The last two years we have also delivered an incredible number of free workshops for schools along with paid for computing focused days, teacher training, science fair workshops and events all around the country.

The experience we have gained these last two years has been instrumental in defining our future plans for the FUZE.

The only negative we received from schools is that it is sometimes difficult to justify adding another computing device to an already cramped IT suite. Those already equipped with Windows laptops and Android tablets for example need to buy extra monitors for the FUZE, or they might already have big desktop PCs taking up lots of space.

However, the FUZE approach of putting a very accessible text based programming language in front of students along with simple to follow worksheets and the inclusion of non-technical very engaging electronic and robotic projects quite simply, just works! Many schools have discovered this and made space for the FUZE as it delivers on all its promises.

To maximise our potential a new FUZE design has been imperative. To make use of existing hardware and yet maintain ease-of-use and accessibility was the challenge.

Developing FUZE BASIC for Windows and other platforms is the key to providing this accessibility. An easy-to-learn/teach programming language, suitable to all ages and gently easing students into more advanced languages. The FUZEBOX is the engagement device – robots, sensors, IoT, games, fun and accessible projects bring it all together, regardless of the computing device.

We believe, the FUZEBOX and FUZE BASIC coupled with your computing device of choice brings the concept of ‘learning to code’ closer and more achievable than any other method.

The simple fact is, the more money we receive, the greater the chance we have of preparing our younger generations for their future and securing their employment potential.

Risks and challenges

The FUZEBOX is already in an advanced state of design. As you can see we have working prototypes but as we all know these are a fair way from the real thing.

Fortunately we're no strangers to hardware manufacturing and as such are confident we can meet our Christmas deadline for the main FUZEBOX. In fact the FUZEBOX is a far simpler device than those we have made before.

The main technical challenges include circuit board design and manufacture however once again we have already designed a number of boards for our existing products.

As much as possible we'd like to use UK suppliers for the FUZEBOX hardware. We already have established relationships with plastic case producers and electronic circuit board assemblers. In normal circumstances the real 'time' challenges would be software development. Once again we are ahead of the game here as FUZE BASIC for Windows, Raspberry Pi and Linux is 99% done - a demo is available at fuzebasic.com.

We have set realistic dates for the Android and Apple versions as these will take longer to finalise.

When embarking on your first production run, it can be hard to produce an accurate plan. The FUZEBOX will be our third new production run, we have learnt from our experiences and even allowed for potential hiccups, we are very confident that we will be able to meet our deadlines.

There is always the risk of copycats, however, we are already a very respected brand, we have an incredibly valuable language, excellent content and have a strong reputation. We’re working with numerous third parties to ensure FUZE BASIC is compatible with as many external devices as possible, the OWI robot arm for example, or the OhBOT, the Raspberry Pi senseHAT and the BBC micro:bit.

FUZE and FUZE BASIC are becoming synonymous with ‘learning to code’. The more we can support third parties and the more devices we can run on, the more we can reduce longer term risks.

There is a risk we won’t be able to reach the maximum audience, this being all the consumer and education markets around the world.

FUZE is already available in the UK in Maplin, Toys ‘R’ Us, Argos, Amazon etc. We already have distributors in the United States, China and UAE and we are forging more relationships all the time.

Can we produce enough content? We already have 10 projects in the project book, 10 PDF lesson plans and worksheets, 10 further projects and several tutorials that have been published in various magazines.

We will continue to produce new content; we’re also developing features into FUZE BASIC to lessen the gap between BASIC and Python and C++ so the transition can be even smoother.
