A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
We all know that working out is beneficial, but it can be hard to assess progress or understand whether today's workout was better or worse than yesterday's. The only thing people know about their strength-training workouts is how much weight they lifted and how many reps they did, and although most cardio equipment provides calorie counts, that information is notoriously inaccurate. Even wearable devices tend to overestimate the number of steps taken. Existing fitness products are devoid of technology that helps people track their progress while improving their strength and mobility.
Enter the Disruptive Force™ Axon™ and AxonFit™ mobile app.
We created Axon™ to provide a high-value, low-cost solution enabling performance tracking and personalized full-body workout guidance. We believe Axon's™ technology and analytics have the potential to improve the way everyone moves, feels, performs, and progresses. Axon™ and the AxonFit™ mobile app bring technology and a shared, competitive experience to strength, rehabilitation, and performance training.
Axon™ is a smart, intuitive, and portable piece of exercise equipment that guides users of all fitness levels through full-body workouts and provides accurate real-time feedback quantifying their efforts. Axon™ helps users to harness their intrinsic energy to improve their workouts, which reduces the potential for injury that can result from lifting weights, making Axon™ a valuable fitness tool for people of all ages and fitness levels. Using our patent-pending technology, Axon™ measures the force applied as the user pushes the sensing end of the Axon™ into a sturdy object (such as the floor, the ceiling, a wall, a tree, etc.) and reports the measured force both through a built-in display on Axon™ and through the AxonFit™ app on the user's mobile device. To help users get the most out of their workouts, Axon™ also provides intuitive, visual guidance and instant feedback through a set of LEDs as users work out.
Here’s how the guidance and feedback mechanism works: Axon™ has a guidance LED that starts out yellow and located closer to the middle of the Axon™ than to the sensing end. When a rep begins, the yellow guidance light travels toward Axon's™ sensing end. The user’s objective is to apply pressure to “chase” the yellow guidance light and turn it green by applying a target amount of force. The LEDs between the user and the yellow LED light up in sequence to show the user’s progress toward meeting the target force. If the user meets the target force, the guidance light turns from yellow to green. When the rep is over, the guidance light travels back toward the user, away from Axon's™ sensing end.
Here's a (very informal) video showing a single rep using our third-generation Axon™ prototype programmed with a target force of 25 lbs for each rep of the set. Axon™ collects information about each rep and each set and presents that information through its built-in display. The per-set information includes the number of reps performed, the maximum force applied by the user over all reps, and the total time under tension during the set. The video below starts after the first rep in a set. You can see that the maximum force during the first rep was 24.9 lbs, and the total time under tension was 204 (with units of pound-seconds). The video shows that the maximum force during the second (very shaky, one-handed) rep is 26.7 lbs, which beats the 24.9 lbs from the first rep and becomes the maximum force for the set. The time under tension also increases from 204 after the first rep to 344 after the second rep, and the rep count increases to 2.
The AxonFit™ App
The AxonFit™ app gives users the ability to program Axon™ so that every workout is a custom workout. Whether users want to target a specific body part or get a full-body workout, AxonFit™ allows users to access a library of exercises and workouts designed specifically for the Axon™ by certified personal trainers. Using the AxonFit™ app, customers can select pre-configured workouts, or customize their own workouts, and download them to Axon™. Axon™ then guides users through those workouts; provides accurate, real-time, visual feedback; and sends data collected during workouts back to AxonFit™. Users will be able to track their workouts and compete with themselves, their friends, and the world like never before.
Check out the video below showing our prototype AxonFit™ app on an Android device and communicating with our third-generation Axon™ prototype. The prototype AxonFit™ app enables us to configure sets of exercises and download them to Axon™. For each set, we can define the number of reps, the target force for each rep, and the ramp-up, hold, and ramp-down time for each rep. During each rep, AxonFit™ collects data from Axon™ and provides a real-time graphical representation of the rep. In the video below, Jordi receives real-time feedback from Axon's™ LEDs as he performs each rep, while Justin is able to see Jordi's results both through Axon's™ LEDs and through the AxonFit™ app.
Axon™ can help everyone, regardless of fitness level!
Axon™ is for everyone. People who are new to working out or unsure of how to use Axon™ will be able to select pre-configured workouts using the AxonFit™ app and download them to the Axon™ to get a full-body strengthening and mobility workout. More advanced users can configure their own workouts using the AxonFit™ app and download those workouts to the Axon™ to add isometric training to their workouts or enhance their current workouts by adding new Axon™ exercises. Physical therapists can use data reported by Axon™ to assess their clients’ progress as they rehabilitate an injury or recover from surgery. And personal trainers will finally be able to tell if their clients’ grunts and groans really do correspond to their efforts.

Our team knew we could implement the technology we would need for Axon™, but we didn't simply want a product that worked well; we wanted one that looked great and would appeal to all kinds of customers. For that, we turned to Whipsaw, the award-winning industrial design firm with experience developing groundbreaking products such as the Nike+ Fuelband. After seeing how their work on the Nike+ Fuelband helped set the standard for quality and design in highly-functional fitness tools, choosing Whipsaw for the development of Axon's™ mechanical design was easy. For Axon™, Whipsaw produced a bamboo-based design that is as elegant as it is functional. Axon™ fits in everywhere, whether you choose to have it in your living room, office, or exercise studio. We believe that Axon™ will be a trend-setting product for many reasons, not least because of its stunning package.
Axon™ weighs approximately 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) and is approximately 5 feet (1.5 meters) long with a circumference of 5.5 inches (14 cm). We chose a battery that provides up to 3 hours of continuous use between charges and up to 5 days of standby time. The battery charges wirelessly through Axon's™ included base. Axon's™ sensing end uses high-durometer rubber for a scuff-free experience with all types of surfaces. One Axon™ will be able to link to multiple AxonFit™ accounts so that multiple users can share a single Axon™. But we think you'll want your own!
To produce Axon™ with the level of quality we demand, we need strong relationships with our suppliers and manufacturing partners. We have already started to build those relationships through our cooperation with powerhouse industrial design firm Whipsaw. Our internal engineering team has been able to hand-make multiple fully-functional Axon™ prototypes and a prototype AxonFit™ app with limited functionality, but we will need help from experts to manufacture a mass-market device and to provide a fully-functional AxonFit™ app. We are building a team of mentors, consultants, and industry advisors to help guarantee our success.
Although there are always timeline risks with product development, we have fully validated the Axon™ technology in multiple generations of functioning prototypes, and we are confident that we will deliver a high-quality finished product on time and free of defects.
Of course, it is almost inevitable that issues and concerns will arise along the way, and we believe our backers understand that. We also know from experience how frustrating it is when a Kickstarter creator fails to communicate with backers. We promise that we will be forthcoming to our backers about our progress. If an unforeseen issue poses a potential delay to our delivery schedule, we will be transparent and timely in our communication to the people who are making our growth and eventual success a reality.
The passionate backers who support Axon™ on Kickstarter are our most important asset. Thank you for believing in us. We will do our best to exceed your expectations.
