About this project
Ael Skyjacker is a unique science fiction series I came upon two years ago. I want to translate the first book from Russian into English in a way that captures the essence of the diverse alien cultures it describes. In doing this, I hope to attract publisher attention for the rest of this Russian sci-fi saga.
Because the creator is also a game developer (Digitilus), he has been able to manifest some of his vision in that fashion. Gamers in the US have expressed interest in learning more about the back story of the game version (SKYJACKER), and there is some narrative online, but is incomparable to the Russian volumes. So, I have decided to raise funds for this effort. I would self-finance, but believe the merits of this material should be both measured and funded by the sci-fi community.
With your help we will make the saga of Ael Skyjacker a worldwide sensation.
SYNOPSIS OF THE FIRST BOOK.
The story is about Ael, a human taken from Earth as a child during between 12,000-14,000 BC our time.
Ael is taken from Earth aboard an alien spaceship of the Rak-Tak-Bashogee (RTB) race, who had been on a colonization scouting mission.
The Rak-Tak-Bashogee are a race of intelligent arthropods. Their name is translated as “Swarm of Units,” as they consist of several subspecies that form a common collective mind.
Rak-Tak-Bashogee spacecraft bear heavy and powerful armor and are surrounded by a light, energy-protective shield. RTB believe that brute force and heavy armor trump clever strategy and technological innovation.
Returning from their Earth evaluation, the RTB ship was attacked and destroyed by an unknown enemy, but Ael was rescued by space wanderer Varmalon, a Balagorean, who came upon the wreckage and decided to scavenge the drifting remains. Digging through the carnage, he picked up a suit in which the boy was packed.
The Balagores are nomads who lost their native world thousands of years ago. Well-versed in piracy and thievery, they are also the best scouts in the Galaxy.
Their spaceships are a patchwork of stolen, captured or scrap technologies, assembled into sophisticated constructions. Being made up of all that they can steal or find in space, each of their ship is unique and inimitable unit.
Upon reaching the public space station, Ael escapes from Varmalon, but finds himself in an inexplicable place filled with thousands of strange creatures. Walking the station's tunnels, Ael attracts the attention of a local enforcement officer (of the Yatagoshee race) who tries to arrest this creature of unknown species.
The Yatagooshee (YTG) are a race of intelligent reptiles. They are the most dominant race in the Galaxy, employing their powerful fleet to control the largest network of hyperspace portals.
The Yatagooshee race has the largest space fleet in the galaxy. Hundreds of thousands of spaceships are patrolling borders of their empire or are based on numerous military bases in hundreds of inhabited worlds on both sides of the Black River. Despite the fact that their ships can be built on any of the thousands of shipyards, spread throughout the galaxy, they have a clear classification and are following the same standard of construction.Their spacecrafts are encased in a hybrid of metallic (grey-blue colored) and organic (brown colored) armor, allowing them to regenerate from battle damage.
Ael escapes the officer’s chase by jumping into a crowd of bystanders. But space station security sounds a full alarm to capture the fugitive. Meanwhile, a Balagore named Aazor is in the middle of a heist elsewhere in the station when the alarm is sounded.
The commotion causes him to have speed his departure. Taking advantage of the turmoil and deceiving the guards, Aazor eludes document checkpoint officials and leaves the station in his spaceship, unaware of the stowaway Ael aboard. With station guards in hot pursuit, Aazor discovers Ael. Brought together in the midst of fleeing and fighting, this unconventional master and apprentice pair have 8 interesting years ahead.
In parallel with the main plot, the reader learns about other races and gets information about the features of their culture and history. This illuminates the chain of events that begin unfolding across the galaxy.
The first book is an introduction to the incredible adventures of the only human in a world of aliens.
Part of what makes this series so unique is that it explores a fictional Universe far in our past rather than the standard futurescape.
The book I want to translate is Book #1 in the series, Frozen Stars, the beginning of the story - how Ael was taken from Earth by a scout team of aliens.
The other books follow the interplanetary politics and conflict between alien races, pirate clans including Ael Skyjacker, and a force that eventually threatens them all and brings the series full circle back to a still ancient Earth.
In summary, what makes this series so unique and important for the English-language science fiction market are:
1. The unique timespan (ancient rather than future); using a caveman as the flawed hero.
2. The piracy perspective as central rather than the classic good versus evil theme.
3. The interplay of dualistic alien societies - none purely evil, none purely good.
I believe this is a series with the potential to be as rich as any existing franchise. So let's get to work!
