Board game cafés are popping up all over the country, yet we're still missing one in Bristol. We're on a mission to change that!
We'll stock board games to suit every taste, whether that's family favourites, cult classics, nascent indie numbers or high strategy brain-busters. Alongside them we'll be serving fresh, uncomplicated food, fantastic teas & coffees, and quality alcoholic drinks (naturally). Add in some atmospheric lighting, comfy seating and our very own purpose-built tables and you'll have an idea of what we're aiming for.
Chance & Counters will be the perfect spot for a lunch time escape, after-work drinks, an evening of entertainment, or some downtime with friends and family.
Why we're doing it
We love playing board games - that goes without saying. For us it's a fantastic way to lose a few hours with friends, actively competing and cooperating with each other without a technological middle-man.
We want to bring people together and introduce the amazing variety of modern board games to Bristol.
How it works
There will be seating for 60 people, of which some parts can be pre-booked. Our library will have about 200 games for our customers to choose from. There will be a cover charge that will go towards replacing damaged or missing pieces from games as well as expanding our collection for all to enjoy. This will mean that you can play for 4 hours, though we can ignore the time limit if we're not too busy or you're finishing a game!
We'll offer a two-tier membership scheme, which allows our regular visitors to save money on the cover charge (or avoid it altogether) and take part in our competitive tournaments and leagues. Naturally there will also be experienced and friendly staff on-hand, to help you choose which games to play and how to play them.
Who we are
We're a group of three friends - Steve, Luke and Richard. Chance & Counters might be our first business venture, but our backgrounds are diverse and we're bursting with ideas and experience. Together we believe we can create a destination that you’ll keep wanting to return to.
If everything goes to plan, Chance & Counters will be located at the base of Christmas Steps, a beautiful and historic part of Bristol.
Where your money goes
We want to make the space as inviting for you as possible from the day of opening, and create a comfortable, ‘premium’ environment. Our new home has bags of potential but it's in need of some work, which is what the majority of the Kickstarter money will go towards if we are successful.
The remaining Kickstarter funding will be used to pay for our purpose-built oak tables (as seen in the video), made by Bristol based Konk! Furniture.
Our memberships, explained
There are two main memberships we'll be offering in the café, alongside the Kickstart exclusive lifetime membership, all of which will give discounts to our members. We expect our busiest ('Peak') times to be over the weekend, Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Our off-peak times will be Monday to Thursday all day and Friday until 4 pm.
Events and competitions
Whilst we expect the majority of our customers to visit with family and friends, we'll also be hosting small-scale events during the week.
Speed gaming: For players who want a quick fix, we will curate a changing list of short, easy-to-learn games that last no longer than 30 minutes each.
Singles’ night: Come meet new people! Join with other players to create new and exciting groups to while away the night with.
League cup: Held over 11 months and open only to members, who compete with other members. Games are chosen from a pool of selected well-known games such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne etc.
Tournament: Once the league is complete, the top sixteen players will be eligible to play in a knock-out tournament, comprising several rounds of 1v1 games and culminating in a grand final.
We're offering sponsorship of the League Cup and Tournament events as a pledge, and when we open we'll be gathering suggestions via social media as to which games to include for each.
We want our backers to have some something tangible to show for their pledges, so we're offering a number branded merchandise items, split into two groups.
These are available to pick up on your first visit to the café or can be shipped anywhere within the U.K - just add £5 for P&P to your pledge and include your address details in the comment. If you're outside the U.K. just let us know and we'll work out a shipping cost.
All of the merchandise is designed to be used and used again - from our robust cotton tote and dice bags to our etched pint glasses.
- Cotton bag set: a counter/dice bag and a tote bag.
- Premium merchandise: metal-rimmed coasters (pack of two), etched pint glass, two-tone mug.
If you lovely people happen to exceed our high expectations, then the following goals will be unlocked.
£12,500: We can increase the size of our board game library to 300 titles
£15,000: Every member gets a free piece of merchandise
£17,500: We will offer 20% off all food & drink for the first two weeks of opening

Risks and challenges
As with any venture, there are of course risks involved. We've spent the last 6 months planning the cafe, drawing on our experiences, education and the community as a whole, to hone our plan. You can rest assured that we are dedicated to the cause and are eager to open our doors.
Our Kickstarter funding helps us to put the icing on what promises to be an amazing venue, and we need your help to do that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
