About this project
Scarlet is an imaginative princess of the Kingdom of the Roses in this "Once Upon a Time" tale. After being engaged to marry to a typical Prince Charming, Scarlet meets Chester who just might be everything she has always hoped for. Meanwhile, the villainous Baron decides that he's going to "do what villains always do" and kidnap this beautiful princess. But things don't turn out as expected. The Baron kidnaps Chester by mistake. Scarlet, with the help of her loyal sidekick Lily, and disguised as Knight and Squire, are determined to be the heroes.
What follows is a journey through the land of fantasy where we meet many interesting creatures - a Troll who wants to go to Knight School, a Not-So-Giant Giant, an evil witch with a girlish crush, a villain working through anger management with the help of a desperate Therapist, a Wolf who was once a man, a pompous yet brave Prince Charming, and a spunky, scatterbrained, side-kick servant.
The Princess Knight is a feature length endeavor that is a mixture of classic musicals and film set to original music and filled with quick wit and touching moments.
This ambitious project is tackling some of the huge obstacles that are tough even for the pros. Puppets. Musical. Special Effects. We are reaching out to generous Kickstarter patrons to help build our puppet cast of original characters, get the remaining equipment we need, and maybe a little extra to keep our crew fed and functioning. The amount we are asking for is all we need to make this happen. We aren't being greedy; we're being realistic.
A word from our writer / director...
"I'm T.C. De Witt, writer and director of The Princess Knight and an experienced teller of tales. I have worked in live theater for fifteen years and have been making movies for nearly as long. The Princess Knight is a culmination of many of my dreams as a storyteller. It combines the fantasies I grew up loving from Jim Henson and Disney; the story is full of life lessons about being yourself and dreaming big - reaching for those goals that can seem so impossible, but never giving up, even in the darkest of times."
"I hope the characters of this fairy tale can be guides and dreams for young ones like my nieces and nephews, but just as much for the childlike dreamer in all of us. Because our dreams and hopes shape us, they make life an adventure everyday, if we just let our imaginations run wild. The scene and video above give but a taste of the excitement The Princess Knight has to offer. They also demonstrate the quality and care Firmament Films puts into all of their work. The professionalism and love of film making Firmament Films is what motivates us to create works that have both entertained and inspired. "
Our hope is you'll join us on this project, taking this Dark Crystal, Beauty and the Beast, and Pixar-inspired puppet storytelling to a new level with THE PRINCESS KNIGHT! HOORAY! Update March 22
Congratulations, everyone, we hit our goal of $4000! And we still have 20 days to go, so why don’t we go for STRETCH GOALS?
Since we hit our original target, we want to make the stretch goals fun and rewarding. Really rewarding. Lets see us really get The Princess Knight to an even better level of production and post-production. Let’s work together now to make this film an even more captivating experience. Thanks for love and the support! Please help and continue to spread the word.
$6000 – If we can get up to this amount, we will be able to upgrade our set design budget. We will be able to build and rent even more complex environments than we already had in store for you all.
$7000 – If we reach this stretch amount, Firmament Films will produce a behind the scenes making of documentary about the entire filming of the movie! This will include interviews with the voice actors, the writer and director, and even sit down conversations with the puppets! You’ll get a candid look behind the scenes at the day-to-day of our felt stars. This documentary will be added to all the DVD’s.
$8500- If we are able to raise just over double our original goal, Firmament Films will arrange a theatrical premiere in a major U.S. city. This extra funding will allow us to rent a theater for the evening. The Princess Knight will play for a crowd of welcomed guest. Any backer able to join us will have a reserved seat. We’ll even spring for the popcorn and soda. After the showing of the film, the cast and crew will sit down for a live Q&A that will be filmed and added to the DVD as yet another behind the scenes featurette.
Risks and challenges
The biggest obstacle for our film is procuring the cast members - the puppets! They are original designs that require a substantial amount of money for each one. We already have most of the equipment we need as we work in the media industry already, from a Zephyr steadicam rig to our new 5d Mark III camera. We've budgeted our time, and have a crew ready to go that has worked with us on our award winning short films. A project of this size has been brewing for 3 years now, and we are confident we are finally ready.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
If you are looking for ..well...me... I'm the guy in the picture behind the camera. My name is Chris Moehr, and I started Firmament Films 4 years ago when a few of us thought it would be fun to try our hand at the 48 Hour Film Project. Ryan Brooks is our cinematographer. Since he is behind the camera all the time, you'll never see him, though he can often be heard singing into the camera just before he cuts. And you met TC a few paragraphs ago. We make up the braintrust of this movie plan. We've been talking about this, dreaming about this, and storyboarding this ever since TC imagined it about 3 years ago. This is kind of our baby.
