About this project
One afternoon in early 2016, my lovely wife and mother of our three children remarked, "It shouldn't be so difficult to schedule playdates for the kids and to find activities they really enjoy".
I set about designing an app that would reflect my personal parenting methodology. Over the years I had developed a cloud-based system of spreadsheets to track progress toward our developmental goals for the kids in the areas of: reading, STEM, music, religion, sports, world news, etc.
At the end of each week I would tally the points to understand where we needed to bolster our efforts to raise well-rounded and socially responsible children. As you'll see below, the concept has since evolved...
What is Kidgenda?
Kidgenda is an innovative parenting app designed for the millions of moms and dads who struggle to plan and maintain their children’s hectic activity schedules.
Currently, parents flip through magazines or filter apps and websites searching for child activities and parenting advice. Kidgenda takes the guesswork and effort out of parenting by intelligently suggesting activities relevant to your child's unique interests, and subject matter relevant to your parenting goals.
With one touch, parents can add events to their calendar and share seamlessly with spouses and caregivers.
How do we do this? The answer is - VERY SECURELY.
First, the parent sets up his or her profile and enters minimal child info (nickname, age, gender, likes). Then, Kidgenda actively pushes suggested events to the parent's smartphone based on the child's likes and interests. It even helps parents track developmental goals via Kidgenda's innovative L.A.P.S. module ("Learning", "Arts", "Physical Activity", "Socialization"), sample shown below:
The app links to Kidgenda's website, which contains fresh content on several parenting topics, such as: "News for Kids", "Child Safety", "Little STEMs", and "Behavioral Challenges". Users will also receive a weekly newsletter with content customized for their specific parenting needs.
Our market encompasses U.S. heads of household who purchase goods and services for a combined 16 million children ages 0-13.
Kidgenda has strong competitive advantages
Kidgenda is uniquely positioned vis-à-vis the competition:
- Pushed Activity Feed – quickly review suggested Kidgenda activities (that are based on your child’s interests) and add to your calendar with a tap
- Insightful Gifting - purchase birthday gifts as determined by a child's "likes"; receive parental approval before final purchase (no more returns or duplicates!)
- Developmental Metrics – leverage Kidgenda’s L.A.P.S. metrics to help develop well-rounded Kidgenda Kids
- Parenting Advice – visit the Kidgenda website for STEM learning advice, a “News for Kids” section, and many other areas
- “One Touch” Playdates - schedule playdates for your Kidgenda Kids at the touch of a button
America's parents need you!!
Our team has already invested substantial time creating Kidgenda's wire frames and requires funding to complete building the smartphone app.
We need your help to bring playdate and activity planning relief to millions of parents! Just to be clear, Kickstarter is an all or nothing proposition: we MUST hit $80,000 to complete the app and make slight revisions based on user feedback.
We also have two (2) stretch goals, each requiring an additional $20,000 to cover local & marketing expenses or offer an Android version of the app.
A note from Kidgenda's Founder
My pop was the best dad in the whole world. He grew up largely without his father and had to assume responsibility for his siblings at a very young age - I think that's why he wanted to be the best father he possibly could.
As a young boy, our house was the house where neighborhood kids gathered to learn at my father’s knee, whether their dads were home or not. When I wanted to learn to play the saxophone, my father read a book and taught himself how to read music so that he could give me my first lessons (he also taught my older brother the cello, despite never having had a music lesson himself).
From my dad I learned that a father’s role is not only to protect and provide for his family, but also to give unconditional love, instill confidence, and foster his children's creativity and curiosity.
Mom and Pop, you still inspire me.
- Mike Barsella, proud father to 3 smart and happy Kidgenda Kids
Risks and challenges
To mitigate risk, here are a few things we must do flawlessly:
1 - launch in a limited geography, to perfect the app before national expansion
2 - grow local users as quickly as possible, because you need two or more kids to make a playdate!
3 - keep a fully-populated event database so all Kidgenda parents will have suitable options for their Kidgenda Kids!
