When you wear your standard rucksack as intended, everyone can access your belongings better than you can. In a city, this is an unnerving design problem. RiutBag has revolved the body of the rucksack to make you feel safe, calm and positive moving around densely populated cities.
Imagine your next holiday to Rome, Barcelona or Paris with a RiutBag. How would it impact your commute? Imagine the effect on a city of commuters if all rucksacks were the Riut way round.
Backing the RiutBag project means - if the funding goal (on the right) is reached - your RiutBag will be manufactured in the first production run and sent to your door in 2015.
This is the prototype:
In 2008 the balance tipped; for the first time over half the world’s population shifted to living in urban spaces. The city - with its economic and cultural benefits in exchange for high-cost, high-density living - isn’t going away. We don't just work in them, we increasingly holiday in cities too.
So let's adapt to our urban environment and increase our quality of life in the city whether we’re commuting, sight-seeing, travelling alone or with others.
Where your money goes.
Your money goes towards placing the order to manufacture, ship and post the RiutBag to your door. The manufacturer is only able to take orders for RiutBag creation in large numbers. This in itself is an amazing milestone that Riut can't wait to reach.
But Kickstarter, we can go further! If backers embrace Riut beyond the funding goal, Riut can consider different colours options now and move into phase two as a company!
Riut stands for Revolution in user thinking. 1000 commuters answered Riut's rucksack surveys this year which helped form the RiutBag. To continue this, Riut is going to build a feedback app so that RiutBag users can easily report problems, issues or good things about using the RiutBag. Riut will respond to good and bad feedback appropriately and give app users other benefits along the way.
With research and user thinking, Riut will continue to create new generations of rucksacks which take us from 2014 right up to the day that teleportation makes rucksacks a thing of the past! But it all starts here, with the first and fundamental revolution of the rucksack.
The RiutBag is a 20 litre commuter bag which fits a 15" laptop. Here's what it looks like inside the prototype.
From experience this size works well for a day trip round a city or a weekend away. It's within carry on dimensions on all airlines at present date (October 2014). Slightly wider than most bags, you can pack plenty without getting in the way of fellow travellers.
Thanks to backers who have asked, here are the dimensions:
Its back panel holds a laptop up to 15", a tablet and keeps A4 papers straight.
You've got a smaller pocket for your phone, keys and wallet.
It has two bottle holders which, uniquely, sit within the profile of the RiutBag. These are also fit for small umbrellas, travel coffee mugs and the odd newspaper. When you're not using them, the space is instead free to use inside the RiutBag.
You no longer need to take off your bag at crucial travel points because there's an invisible ticket pocket on each strap for train tickets. It has an adjustable chest strap for those who need it too.
RiutBag is made from custom foam-lined Cordura and Kevlar. It's waterproof and extremely sturdy. Following my Riut design philosophy, I opted for stronger materials that last longer.
Just the beginning.
The next generation of rucksacks, the RiutBag, meets the challenges of our urban lives today and for the foreseeable future. But the city doesn’t stand still and neither do our lives. In the coming years, travel patterns will change, new forms of transport are being dreamt up, the technology we carry will evolve and the needs of the urban rucksack user will change.
Riut will continue to revolve around the real and current needs of urban travellers. As technology develops - with 3D or even 4D printing and smart materials which respond to light, weight, heat, movement and sound - which becomes useful and viable for rucksacks, Riut will be there to incorporate them into future generations of the RiutBag.
By backing the first RiutBag you're backing a design philosophy which anticipates innovations in future rucksacks, and other useful everyday objects, for our lives as they continue to change.
Sarah's design philosophy.
Riut is pronouced "riot" and stands for Revolution in user thinking. This is the disruptive user-focussed design philosophy behind every decision Sarah takes.
In practice, Revolution in user thinking is Riut's approach to every seam, material, zip and angle on the RiutBag. It’s the motivator to use stronger, longer lasting materials rather than to build a rucksack that falls apart after a few years. It’s the reason Sarah surveyed over 1000 people online who were open to and interested in giving their views on rucksacks and commuting. It’s the drive behind launching the RiutBag online here via Kickstarter and asking rucksack users to decide whether you want Riut to exist. It’s Riut's design philosophy to keep it on the right track.
Sarah is always thinking anew about the user, how his or her travel patterns are changing, how technology in the user’s bag needs to be accessed and how that changes over time. If that means doing something in a totally new and revolutionary way, then so be it. As long as it benefits the user, it’s worth it.
The RiutBag has come a long way!
Risks and challenges
I'm here on Kickstarter because I'm ready to build a company that delivers fully functioning, user focussed and high quality RiutBags. To help mitigate the risks of doing this for the first time, here are the steps I have taken.
Working closely with an experienced prototyping company, together we have addressed design and production risks. The RiutBag has been designed with the user and manufacturer in mind. The manufacturer is an expert in complex textiles and rucksacks in particular.
I have sourced experts to fulfill each stage of the manufacturing, freight and delivery process. That means, whilst my invention and company leadership is new to the world, your RiutBag and its delivery is in the hands of experts in their field.
As a first time business owner, I understand my limitations. I'll be updating you with info about my progress so you'll be first to know how it's going. I have created a timetable to allow for the inevitable bumps in the road so that you can start using your RiutBag when you expect.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
