RiutBag's Kickstarter campaign is now over! In the last 28 days, over 1500 amazing Kickstarter backers have come together to turn the conventional rucksack around. Why? To allow us all to feel secure and travel with peace of mind in the world's busiest cities.

What now? The backers have done their bit. Now it's over to me, the creator of the RiutBag, to complete my part of the deal: to successfully manufacture, check, ship and post RiutBags to early adopters of the RiutBag all over the world.
Follow the journey the RiutBags will take from being an idea, to manufacture, the production line, quality control, global freight and distribution on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ and Linkedin. Thanks for helping a new one-person startup ignite this Revolution in user thinking. I can't wait to get your RiutBag to you.
Welcome to the rucksack revolution
Giving you peace of mind whilst travelling in the city - on your commute or on holiday - is my quest. I'm Sarah, the creator of the RiutBag: the backwards backpack with all zips against your back for secure city travel. With feedback data from the first fantastic 1000 RiutBag users, I've built two new RiutBags for you to choose from:
> RiutBag R15 grey, 15 litre day backpack, bottle holders, 15" laptop, A4 doc holder: Dispatch December 2015
> RiutBag R15 black, 15 litre day backpack, bottle holders, 15" laptop, A4 doc holder: Dispatch December 2015
> RiutBag R10 grey, 10 litre super slim city backpack, extra stationery storage, 15" laptop, A4 doc holder: Dispatch December 2015
> RiutBag R10 black, 10 litre super slim city backpack, extra stationery storage, 15" laptop, A4 doc holder: Dispatch December 2015
All RiutBags are below the regular retail price during this Kickstarter campaign.
For businesses that value data security, employee health through good posture and lower stress, message me if you'd like a larger order. If funded, all rewards will ship in December this year from the UK.
I spotted a problem
The person behind you can get into your backpack more easily than you can. That's an unnerving design fault in our busiest towns and cities, travelling with expensive devices which access even more valuable data.
So I turned the backpack round. No outer zips; they're all against your back. By revolving the body of the conventional rucksack, and moving all the outer zips to your back, I created the RiutBag.
Thanks to the incredible Kickstarter crowd, the first 1200 RiutBags exist and are being tested all over the world. The data is in: 93% of RiutBag users say using the RiutBag gives peace of mind in busy urban spaces. 99% of RiutBag users say its safer than other backpacks.
If you think the RiutBag is a good idea, please share it to reach people you think could benefit from the design. If you would like a RiutBag, simply choose the pledge level on the right and come and join the rucksack revolution on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google plus :)
Why Riut? #ipredictariut
Riut, pronounced "riot", stands for Revolution in user thinking. It's my disruptive but positive design mantra. It's a description of the RiutBag - the body of which has revolved to be more user focussed - and the way I run this startup. I revolve all my thinking around you, the user.
I ask RiutBag users to give me feedback on the RiutBag. Your thinking and feedback powers my design process, so you build the RiutBags of the future. This way, the RiutBag evolves with our needs. If the technology in our bags, travel patterns or user requirements change, you will show this in the data and I will sculpt the new RiutBags to meet the challenges you face.
Revolution in user thinking is the business model behind the urban design startup which will make RiutBags. With your help, I can launch Riut in earnest and make RiutBags until the day teleportation makes luggage a thing of the past!
Choose from two new RiutBag models, built with data provided by the first RiutBag users: RiutBag R15 and the RiutBag R10. Both are available in black and grey.
RiutBag R10: 10 litre
This model emerged from the user data as the replacement for the laptop bag. Super slim, it almost disappears against your back. Perfect for the laptop carrier who has a lot of clients to see across the city; or the long haul flight passenger who has checked in all luggage and just needs laptop for work, entertainment and few vital extras.
RiutBag R15: 15 litre
This is the classic rucksack with space for your 750ml water bottle. It's contained enough to take with you every day, but has enough space to pack for a few days away. For those bringing a gym kit, extra pair of shoes as well as lunch to work, you can pack them alongside your laptop and important documents.
Who will make this all happen?
Every aspect of this project has been created from scratch for you. Berlin based krautrock band Camera wrote and recorded this track especially for the RiutBag Kickstarter video. Angie Thomas and Lucy Irving filmed and animated the video in Brighton. Jasper White and his team took these stunning photos in London. Daisy Chen at the factory in Huian, China worked with me to redesign the RiutBags and will manage this production run. At the factory, 30 skilled stitchers will cut and hand sew your RiutBags at sewing machines. My freight company is Freedom Logistics who get the RiutBags from China, by sea and air, to England. From there, Parcelship is my postal company who will package and send your RiutBags in the post.
I'm here on your behalf to bring these fantastic experts together to deliver to the greatest of their abilities and get your RiutBag safely to you.
Who is Sarah Giblin?
I am. I'm the creator of the RiutBag. I'm not a bag designer by trade. I was simply a rucksack user. I believe users are perfectly placed to spot design faults and come up with simple, user focussed solutions. I encourage you to do the same. Now with the help of Kickstarter, we users can bring ideas to life.
Until last year I was a very regular commuter between Reading and London, and also between England and Germany. It was my regular travel that made me realise my trusty rucksack is the wrong way round. I thought of the RiutBag and felt it made a lot more sense.
Here's my story so far:
Thanks for spotting the RiutBag and taking closer a look! If you think it's a good idea, please share it to help reach city travellers who could benefit from greater peace of mind. Back the RiutBag R15 or R10 model in black or grey to help me fund this production run and launch Riut - the design startup which revolves around you.
If you back the project, you'll be getting updates from me about the manufacturing process in China, freight and postal management. I'll also let you into the world of having an idea, sketching, prototyping and asking for help from the amazing Kickstarter crowd to get it out there in the world. I'm also here to answer any of your questions :)
Riut. Revolution in user thinking
Risks and challenges
In my updates to come, I always report on risks and challenges first. My first Kickstarter project taught me which risks really impact the project and mean the most to my backers:
Highly likely risk: Postal errors
2% of all deliveries go missing in the post; this is no different for the RiutBag. This is a blow to you and me: after designing, funding, shipping via sea freight, packing and posting, sometimes post just gets lost. I will include extra RiutBags in production to cover the loss so no one is left empty handed. I will also be updating you on how to help the post get to you at your end.
Likely risk: customs + taxes
I will send the RiutBags direct to you from England. This means there may be tax for you to pay when it comes into your country. Sending the first 1000 RiutBags to Kickstarter backers, very few backers experienced this. However, in Canada about 2% of backers had sales tax to pay. The Canadian revenue researched the RiutBag online and charged tax on the usual retail price.
Likely risk: Distance = time
I will post to every backer at the same time from the UK. This means, if you are a UK or EU backer, you will most likely receive your RiutBag early. If you are further from the UK, your delivery will take longer.
In some cases RiutBags arrive 1.5 months after delivery for many reasons: customs checks, customers being unavailable to accept post, changes of address, postal strikes and some post simply being lost.
I wish I could hand deliver each RiutBag personally! But I must use the postal service. So please allow more time for the RiutBag to reach you if you are further away from me. And if your RiutBag doesn't arrive, you know I'm here to help you.
Low risk: Imperfections
If there is a problem with your RiutBag when it arrives, simply let me know and I'll work on a solution to fix it. I will check every RiutBag before it leaves the factory, so this problem is not very likely to arise at all.
Low risk: Project derailment
I have worked with my factory, freight and postal companies to complete the first production run. With my experience, I am working to strict and realistic deadlines to which we can keep in the current geo-political climate. A major shipping or road accident, strikes and war are real examples of risks which could impact a project like this. Thankfully, nothing of that sort is stopping the project.
