About this project
My project began in 2009 when I was asked to be part of a cool online photo project called The 50 States Project. Stuart Pilkington was the creator of this year long photographic project. I was chosen as the Iowa photographer. There were 6 assignments and we were asked to represent our state. From this idea came forth two individual yet very related projects: Lost in the Midwest and This is Where I Am From.
Both projects encompass my world...living in the Midwest. Lost in the Midwest contains environmental portraits of people I know or get to know through photographing them. I make portraits of people who have made the Midwest their home. Some of my subjects are born Iowans and some have been transplanted here and have thrived.
This is Where I Am From contains the landscapes in the Midwest that have been transformed over time by living here.
I am interested in how and why we attach ourselves to place. It is my intent for this work to reveal a tiny bit of the unspoken, the poetic, the immense mystery of being human.
This past January I decided to self-publish a little book using Blurb. my eyes are not shut is the title of this book. I used my book as my inspiration for my forth-coming exhibition this fall at Drake University in Des Moines. The exhibition of my eyes are not shut at the Anderson Gallery will be the largest exhibition I have ever had. I see this as a golden opportunity to make more connections with people and to expand my world.
WHAT IS THE MONEY FOR?
I am asking YOU to become part of my project through Kickstarter. The money will be used for printing the photographs at my professional lab in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Many of the prints will be really large, up to 30 x 40 inches in size. Dry-mounting, matting and framing the prints is the next priority. This is very expensive and I will do much of the framing myself. $1800 will cover most of the urgent expenses needed for this up-coming show. Any additional donations will help me be able to add to this exhibition by making more prints. And I will continue to shoot! My REWARDS include PHOTO SHOOTS!
If I do not make my goal of $1800, I will not receive any of the pledges. Your card will NOT be charged. It means a lot to me if you become part of my project. It is fun to be able to share my work! I would love to make more new portraits...!
To date, my project has mostly been funded by me. Cornell College (where I teach part-time in the art department) has awarded me several travel grants and this has greatly helped fund the gas, food and lodging on the road. The Anderson Gallery at Drake is also contributing support with the matting and plexiglass.
I am looking forward to this expansive exhibition in Des Moines this fall. I really believe it is my biggest accomplishment since The University of Iowa Press published my book Down to the River; Portraits of Iowa Musicians in 2007. This book, signed and dated, is ONE of my rewards. The book comes with a super cool CD of 18 songs by my favorite musicians. The book features Greg Brown, Pieta Brown, Bo Ramsey, David Zollo, Joe & Vicki Price, Dave Moore, Kevin Gordon, The PINES, Radoslav Lorkovic and many more!
Thank you Pieta Brown for use of the song Out of the Blue and Katy Hoffer for shooting the video of me in your garden! And special thanks to my friend Chris Offutt for his big support of this new work!!!
Thank you Kickstarter!
BIG LOVE TO ED!
