The Forest Zine
The Forest is a three zine set exploring personal narratives from photographers Alex Welsh, Christian Hansen, and Mustafah Abdulaziz
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The Forest is a three zine collection that explores personal narratives from photographers Alex Welsh, Christian Hansen, and Mustafah Abdulaziz released in September 2012.
Each zine features one photographer and is printed in full color offset, with a photo insert, and a personal essay by the photographer. Each zine will be 40 pages, 8.5 x 5.5 saddle-stitched and are limited to an edition of 500, released together in the summer of 2012.
The beginning of each week we will be releasing a sneak peak of one zine as well as an interview with the photographer so check back often.
ABOUT EACH ZINE:
In literature the forest is a place of wonder. It’s where nature, adventure, and the unknown meet. As a metaphor, the forest is where the subconscious reveals itself, and with it some reflection of inner truth. It is from here that the following three photographers turn the symbolic tangible, and the internal visible. Through them we emerge with a sense of discovery and a new affirmation of self.
Alex Welsh’s zine focuses on his time living in San Francisco where the summers arrive late and last well into October. These late summer months inhabit a special place in his life, and his photographs capture a sense of the excitement and potential of youth that will forever be an emotional map of home.
Alex Welsh is best know for his award-winning work on the Hunters Point region of San Francisco, focusing on the systematic inequalities inherent in public housing. He is a regular feature shooter for The Fader magazine. He currently lives in New York.
Mustafah Abdulaziz documented the entire arc of his summer love story with Ida Morin – who had to return to her native Sweden come winter. Through them, we experience the excitement of new love, the stress and isolation of a long distance relationship, and the singular devotion that drives you to find each other again.
Mustafah Abdulaziz is highly regarded in both the editorial and art world. He currently lives in Berlin with his girlfriend Ida. He is best known for reinventing the American road trip with his Memory Loss project.
Lastly, photographer Christian Hansen brings us into his wanderlust world that exists some where between art and real life. Christian's effortlessly nuanced photos illustrate how a single image is often insufficient, and yet it is this mystery that makes the collection more compelling.
Christian Hansen is currently at Western Kentucky University finishing a Journalism degree. He is a regular contributor to The New York Times, and spends his summers working and shooting in New York.
The Forest will be the first release from the small run art publishing house Prairie Library Press. For months we have been working, emailing, and connecting New York, Kentucky and Berlin to make this labor of love something great. Now we need to connect with you to make it a reality.
HOW THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT:
The great majority of the $9,000.00 will go directly to printing costs. All publisher’s profits will go back into future projects.
