Introduction from Project Creator, Nick Sharps

In an age of stunning CG animations, it’s easy to be inured to special effects. I've seen all manner of impossible things brought to life on the big screen, but rarely have I witnessed anything as awe-inspiring as Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. The sheer scale of the movie is breathtaking. It invokes the same glee I experienced as a child watching Godzilla movies. Pacific Rim brought all of that back to me in a surge of geeky joy. It’s not a perfect film, but it sure is fun; so fun, in fact, that I wanted more. And that is why I approached Joe Martin with the idea behind the anthology we’re calling Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters.

TIM MARQUITZ, co-publisher and Editor-In-Chief of Ragnarok Publications, author of the popular “Demon Squad” series, and editor of such acclaimed anthologies as the Cthulhu-inspired Fading Light and the urban fantasy-based Manifesto: UF.

J.M. MARTIN, co-publisher and Creative Director of Ragnarok Publications, founder of Nine Worlds Media, and co-author of the Wild Western supernatural horror series “Dead West.”

NICK SHARPS, contributor for SF Signal and Elitist Book Reviews.

Ragnarok Publications is launching from the gate with the bar set high when it comes to professional artwork. Creative Director Joe Martin is very discriminating when it comes to art selection, and he knows the right artwork can make or break any project, much less a Kickstarter one.

So, with that in mind, one of the first things Joe did—after we all decided this was a project we were going to Kickstart—was to commission DAN HOWARD for the cover. Formerly an artist for Hideo, the popular theatrical concert celebrating Japanese animation and video games and featuring Final Fantasy, Noir, Mega Man, and more, Dan became our first and most perfect choice, and he met the challenge so well, we hired him again to do a limited edition cover.

So, without further ado, have yourself a gander at the Kaiju Rising regular edition and limited edition covers.

Funds will be used to:
1) pay our authors the Professional Market rate of 5¢/word,
2) edit, design, format, and print the books,
3) produce all the perk items and add-ons,
4) ship the books and perk items.

Overfunding via the stretch goals will go to remunerate the principle creators involved in said stretch goals, as well as cover additional operating and promotional expenses incurred by the project creators.

Overfunding is a good thing! It means more great stuff like Kaiju Rising will come from Ragnarok Publications, making your part instrumental in the ongoing success of a publisher of professional-quality, dark genre fiction. It makes you part of the Ragnarok family.

Each time we approached an author for this project we were met with encouragement and enthusiasm. It has been a humbling experience so far and we've assembled a great collection of authors to bring this anthology to life.

Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters is a collection of 19 stories focused around the theme of strange creatures in the vein of Pacific Rim, Godzilla, Cloverfield, and more. The anthology will open with a foreword by New York Times bestselling author JONATHAN MABERRY, and close with an afterword by JEREMY ROBINSON, author of Project Nemesis, the highest selling Kaiju novel in the United States since the old Godzilla books—and perhaps even more than those.

From New York Times bestsellers to indie darlings we found authors that are perfectly suited for writing such larger than life stories. Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters will honor that proud tradition, while exploring new and exciting ways to experience Kaiju.

Again, that's 19 awesome and original Kaiju tales, and this is the minimum you will get by backing this Kickstarter. Below you'll find options for three more stories by authors—who have already confirmed—if we can hit certain very attainable stretch goals.

Here's the current lineup:

LARRY CORREIA: New York Times bestselling author of the Monster Hunter International series, the Grimnoir Chronicles, and the thriller Dead Six.
"I enthusiastically endorse giant Kaiju monsters smashing stuff. How could I not write a story for this?"

PETER CLINES: Writer of the EX-HEROES series, -14-, The Junkie Quatrain, The Eerie Adventures of the Lycanthrope Robinson Crusoe, several short stories, and countless film articles.
“Since I was a little kid, giant creatures of all types have made my heart race. Teeth the size of cars, eyes like swimming pools, feet that turn cities into dust...That’s why I was thrilled to hear about Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters. It’s sci-fi, horror, and action, all on a scale I love.”

JAMES LOVEGROVE: New York Times bestselling author of the Pantheon series, the Redlaw series, and The Clouded World series (as Jay Amory).
"When I was invited to contribute to Kaiju Rising, I thought, "A seventeen-syllable poem? I can manage that." Then I realised we were actually talking about giant, city-smashing monsters, and I thought,"I can DEFINITELY manage that."
What could be better than writing a tale about some oversized beastie that rises from the ocean to stomp and devastate? It might not be a mindless reptilian engine of destruction. It might be misunderstood, needy, lost, lonely, like the dinosaur in Ray Bradbury's gut-wrenchingly haunting story "The Fog Horn". Or it might, after all, just be a vicious scaly bastard that wants nothing more than to snack on a few tasty little human morsels and wreck the local real estate market.
One thing's for sure—I not only want to be in this anthology, I damn well want to read it. The editors are assembling a crack team of authors, and you can bet they're going to pursue this project with every last fiery radioactive breath in their bodies.

ERIN HOFFMAN: Author of the Chaos Knight series from Pyr, beginning with Sword of Fire and Sea, followed by Lance of Earth and Sky and concluding with Shield of Sea and Space. She is also an award-winning video game designer.
"I really should be working on my novel. REALLY. But I couldn't resist a Kaiju anthology. The question rapidly evolved from 'can I write a kaiju story?' to 'which of these 73,978 awesome Kaiju stories should I write?'. Kaiju are like that: one second they're in the ocean and everything is fine, the next they're eating all the Tokyo."

JAMES MAXEY: Author of the Dragon Age fantasy series of Bitterwood, Dragonforge, and Dragonseed, the Dragon Apocalypse series of Greatshadow, Hush, and Witchbreaker, as well as the superhero novels Nobody Gets the Girl and Burn Baby Burn.

JAYM GATES: Editor, publicist, co-author of Rigor Amortis, a zombie romance novel, and short story writer in M-Brane SF and anthologies such as Triumph Over Tragedy and Aether Age: Helios.
"I was thrilled when Nick invited me to the Kaiju Rising anthology. I have a not-so-secret fascination with the monstrous and otherworldly, and this is a perfect excuse to indulge that fascination. Better yet, I get to meet all the fabulous creatures my fellow contributors come up with!"

TIMOTHY W. LONG: Author of the popular zombie series from Permuted Press, Among the Living, as well as Beyond the Barriers, The Zombie Wilson Diaries, and the urban fantasy, At the Behest of the Dead.
"Giant monsters and giant robots? What's not to love! I'm thrilled to be included among this fantastic group of artists."

MIKE MACLEAN: Screenwriter for the Roger Corman-produced SyFy movies Piranhaconda, Sharktopus, and Dinocroc vs. Supergator.
“I write flicks about mutant gators and ginormous rampaging cheerleaders. Needless to say, I’m a fan of the genre. I’d buy this book in a heartbeat, even if my name wasn’t listed among such an awesome pack of authors.”

NATANIA BARRON: Library Journal says of Pilgrim of the Sky, "Steampunk meets goddess worship in this unusual and highly original story of loves that cross the borders of time and space. Barron's debut is an sf adventure that mixes high action with exquisitely detailed depictions of everyday existence in these alternate worlds."
Natania says of Kaiju Rising: "Monsters. Big, big monsters. And stories. Big, big stories. I've always been fascinated with the monstrous, and you don't get much more gargantuan than Kaiju. What mysteries lurk beneath the still waters of this anthology? I can't wait to find out."

JOSHUA REYNOLDS: Author of several tie-in franchises, including Gold Eagle’s Executioner line and Black Library’s Warhammer Fantasy line.
"I was pleased to be invited to contribute to this anthology. I’m a monster guy, and I always have been. Big, small, aquatic, avian, lupine, reptilian or alien, wrapped in bandages, stitched from corpses or with veins full of radioactive fire, it doesn't matter to me—I love reading about ‘em and I love writing about ‘em."

CLINT LEE WERNER: Author C.L. Werner has penned numerous titles for Black Library's Warhammer line of novels, as well as Rogue Blades Entertainment and various role-playing game supplements.

DAVID ANNANDALE: Writes in a variety of genres such as the Jen Blaylock thrillers, the horror Gethsemane Hall, and, yes, David is also another Black Library Warhammer scribe, having penned Mephiston, Yarrick, and The Death of Antagonis.
“I've loved dinosaurs and giant monsters all my life. And since Godzilla was my gateway to horror movies and to the broader SFFH field, you could say that his shadow looms over my entire career. So contributing to this collection is something that has sent both my younger and my present selves over the moon.”

JONATHAN WOOD: Wood writes odd little things that show up in odd little places, including in The Best of Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Chizine, and Weird Tales, as well as his recent urban fantasy hit No Hero.

GINI KOCH (AS J.C. KOCH): Science fiction, fantasy, and horror writer best known for the Alien Series (informally known as the "Katherine 'Kitty' Katt" series) novels published by DAW Books.
"I love writing short horror, and when someone says 'Kaiju' I say 'I'm there'. Can't wait to be in this anthology with all these other wonderful authors who take nightmares and turn them into entertainment. Well, entertainment of a kind. Hey, some of us like hiding under the covers, what can I say?"

PAUL GENESSE: Writer of the bestselling Iron Dragon series for Five Star Books, as well as editor for the demon-themed "Crimson Pact" series.
"I can't wait to write a story for the Kaiju Rising anthology and have been working on the rough draft since I first played with my two-foot-tall Godzilla toy as a child."

PATRICK M. TRACY: Unsubstantiated rumors indicate that Patrick M. Tracy is part Sasquatch. When in his natural surroundings, he enjoys playing bass guitar, bending nails with his bare hands, and juggling cinder blocks. He also has a fondness for archery.

Patrick loves writing about monsters, Kaiju especially. He also writes fiction and poetry, and has been published several times in both disciplines. One of the co-creators of The Crimson Pact anthology series with Paul Genesse, Patrick has appeared in all five volumes writing both the origin story and the series finale.

EDWARD M. ERDELAC: Author of the "Merkabah Rider" weird western series, Coyote's Trail, Dubaku, Buff Tea, and Terovolas, short story writer, and sometime Star Wars contributor.
"There are two kinds of stories I always try to find the time to write. Weird Westerns and Daikaiju. Combining the two was an idea I couldn't resist. The inevitability of a giant monster is what I like about them. Seeing this thing trudging through a crumbling cityscape or hillside toward you is like watching the relentless approach of a tsunami wave. There’s nowhere you can go on foot that’s far enough out of the way. And when they meet—! It’s like the best parts of pro wrestling and monster movies played out on the greatest HO scale-model train set ever."

SAMUEL SATTIN: The Los Angeles Review states that "Sattin appears to draw inspiration from more current postmodern superhero writers like Grant Morrison or Warren Ellis...League of Somebodies bears far more of a debt to Doom Patrol than to The Avengers."

BONNIE JO STUFFLEBEAM: Her fiction and poetry has appeared in magazines such as Clarkesworld, Strange Horizons, Daily Science Fiction, and Goblin Fruit. She reviews short fiction on her blog, Short Story Review.
"I'm excited to be contributing a story to Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters. I love monsters. I love writing about monsters and reading about monsters, so when Nick asked me to contribute, I jumped at the opportunity. I hope to add my own voice, and the voice of the Kaiju themselves, to the anthology. As far as what type of giant animal I'll be basing my monster off of, I won't say, but I will give a hint: think red. Sometimes blue. As for my favorite Kaiju, I've always had a soft spot for Gamera."

PETER RAWLIK: His work has appeared in Crypt of Cthulhu, Morpheus Tales, Innsmouth, and the anthologies Dead But Dreaming 2, Urban Cthulhu, and Worlds of Cthulhu. Pete is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Science Fiction and Reanimators is his first full-length novel.

TIMELINE: All stories will be turned in to Ragnarok's editors by October 15, 2013. It is our goal to have the anthology prepared to ship by December, 2013. Because digital copies take less time to prepare than the rest of the items, they will likely be sent to backers upon availability.

STRETCH GOAL #1: UNLOCKED! At $11,500, we will include interior art to lead into each story. Kaiju sketches will be provided by artists ROBERT ELROD and CHUCK LUKACS. That's 19 pieces of original art, minimum, and 22 pieces if the three locked authors are unlocked, with the potential of 25 pieces if the KAIJU CREATOR tiers are filled up and the stories are accepted.

STRETCH GOAL #2: ACHIEVED! KANE GILMOUR has visited or lived in over 40 countries around the world. A former rock climber and mountain biker, he now kayaks, and still explores the furthest reaches of the world, as time permits. He is the author of Resurrect and The Crypt of Dracula and the co-author of the bestselling Jack Sigler thriller, Ragnarok
"I was thrilled to be asked to participate in KR:AoM! The concept is excellent, and it's coming just at the time when people are rediscovering their childhood love of giant monsters. The people involved are top caliber, and I'm excited to share a small slice of the world of my upcoming novel Monster Kingdom, by providing a short story touching on a creature referenced, but not shown in the novel. Bring on the destruction!"

STRETCH GOAL #3: ACHIEVED!HOWARD ANDREW JONES' swashbuckling historical fantasies of Dabir and Asim have appeared in a variety of publications over the last decade, and their first novel, The Desert of Souls, was released in February 2011 from St. Martin's Thomas Dunne Books imprint to critical acclaim. The second, The Bones of the Old Ones, was released in December of 2013. Both novels made the Barnes and Noble Year’s Best Fantasy list, and The Bones of the Old Ones received a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly. Jones has written two novels for the Paizo Pathfinder Tales adventure line, Plague of Shadows, and Stalking the Beast. Howard blogs regularly at the Black Gate web site and maintains a web outpost of his own, and he can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter.
"Monsters turn up a lot in my fiction, and Kaiju style critters wandered across the stage in the first two Dabir and Asim novels. In true Ray Harryhausen fashion, The Bones of the Old Ones features a titanic battle between a Roc (the giant predatory bird of Arabian Nights fame) and a huge spirit wolf fashioned of snow and ice.
"Given my interests, I naturally jumped at the chance to create a story for
Kaiju Rising. In one or two of the Dabir and Asim stories I've referenced a deadly encounter the boys had on the ocean, and now I'm finally setting the tale down."

STRETCH GOAL #4: ACHIEVED! An original story by PETER STENSON, the author of the novel Fiend (Crown). He has stories and essays published or forthcoming in The Sun, The Greensboro Review, The Bellevue Literary Review, Confrontation, Harpur Palate, Post Road, Fugue, Passages North, The Pinch, Blue Mesa Review, The Journal, and Fourteen Hills, among others. He has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and Fiend was picked by Amazon as their "Book of the Month" for July, 2013.

STRETCH GOAL #5: ACHIEVED! An original story by New York Times bestselling tie-in author JAMES SWALLOW. He will be writing his story in the popular COLOSSAL KAIJU COMBAT setting (Sunstone Games)!

STRETCH GOAL #6: At $15,500, we have a very special, legendary ART option that will be unlocked for BACKERS AT KAIJU JUNIOR ($25) and above—an original piece of full color, painted artwork by Hugo Award-winning BOB EGGLETON.

Delays in editing and/or production are always a possibility, of course. Our ultimate goal is to provide you with a quality product. We will keep backers in the loop during the entire process, and if any problems crop up you will be informed.

We already have 19 authors lined up, leaving no doubt to the quality of the anthology. Should an author have to drop out for personal reasons we will find another published author as a replacement. No matter what, you will get 19 thrilling stories should we reach our funding goal.

  • Yes. We neglected to mention that, but we will be listing everyone from Kaiju Broodling and above in the acknowledgements and at the level they backed.

  • In order to gain access to the optional Purchase Add-ons you must pledge, at minimum, the Kaiju Junior tier ($25 US).

    Last updated:
  • At the end of the Kickstarter you will be sent a Kickstarter Survey. Use the survey to tell us how you want to spend your pledged funds.

For example, if you ordered the Kaiju Junior tier for $25 but you would also like to add-on a Kaiju "Cookie Monster" plushie, go to Manage My Pledge and add $25 more to your Pledge Amount (for a total of $50). You will go through the payments process again, but don't worry, your card will not be charged multiple times. The new pledge will overwrite the old one. After all that, when the Kickstarter closes, watch for a survey in your email.

International backers should pay special attention to the shipping fees and adjust their pledges accordingly.

    Last updated:
  • Yes! You can treat any extra pledge levels you want exactly like they were a normal purchase add-on. Just use the Manage My Pledge feature to increase the amount of your pledge by the cost of the additional pledges. You will be able to order the extras via the Kickstarter Survey once the project ends.
