Project "Viki" is a Time Machine that plays video games and more. The concept is: if you want to play the old games, you need a time machine to take you to that era to play. She is inspired by George Pal's 1960 classic "The Time Machine" which I consider to be the the definitive time travel platform. Viki honors that design and takes it further to include museum quality construction, full custom electronics, and more. She will be the perfect picture frame for any digital content in a gallery, library or office. Some people might put a mini bar in their office; why, when you could have a Viki!
Viki will be made of wood (walnut, maple, and bloodwood), brass, stained glass, etching, you name it. She will feel great to the touch and the eye. The finished prototype will tour the country at Steampunk, Victorian, and Burning Man shows. She will make her final resting place at my gallery in Santa Ana, The Rebel Unit.
Let me give you a video introduction of Viki. I've had a lot of questions asking how the project started, why we went a certain route, even why $12000, so here's an explanation. I didn't say one thing in the video, and that's the bolts for the panels will be custom built also, matching sun and moon designed heads cast in brass. Everything visible and pleasingly to the touch will be period, and look like it was a machine transported from the 1800's.
Viki is the beginning of Gothic Glow's Gameworks division. I will eventually open up our services for custom game and pinball machines, or even copies of Viki. I will be able to get this on firm footing starting with your help on this project!
Now people always want to know about the hardware for Viki, so here's a little video showing specs, how things work, and explaining the high performance of the computers. Yes, this is two machines. We use two machines in our design, well, actually 4 machines, if you include embedded as well!
Would you like to see some one of the major tools we'll use to create Viki? Of course you would! Without further ado, let me introduce you to Milla the 6 axis mill with a video.
Everyone that contributes will not only receive all the gifts on their donation level, but regular video and text updates on the progress of the project as well. I can't wait to show you the magic! Speaking of showing the magic, I do have larger pictures of the Gothic Glow artwork (many of which are in the donation levels) at www.gothicglow.com. I hope you are as inspired to help with this project as I am to complete it!
Speaking of gifts, here's a video talking of me talking about the lamps and the boards.
Next, I've put in some high resolution pictures of the gifts, the Talking Spirits Boards! (shown is before attached to a stained base)
Also here's some up close pictures of the Gothic Glow Luminiferous Aether Oscillators (lamsps).
The theme of these lamps are when the light bulb was first invented, the church got involved to decide if it was good or evil. I'm assuming they decided it was evil. So naturally, the only way to make the light brighter was to construct a device that could harness the evil. The stain on the box is the color of dried blood (yes, I tested on my own). The etching around each bulb is taken from a Celtic grave, and of course the skull dimmer to control how much evil is harnessed. Below is a still showing the detail in the etching. The flickering of the filament is also really soothing and awesome in these devices.
I'll add more updates as time progresses. I hope you are as excited to get the donation gifts as I am to make Viki. All of the Gothic Glow items are hand made and extremely labor intensive.
"Viki" is short for "Victorian."
