Mary's Market is a historical hometown cafe in Sierra Madre, California, Tucked away in a little canyon at the base of the San Gabriel mountains, our neighborhood gem delivers hot coffee and homespun eats, vintage finds, and old school canyon charm. It is beloved by locals and visitors alike for its friendly atmosphere, delicious menu items, and rich history.
Mary's Market comes from a time when the local cafe was the pulse of small-town America. Even today, it is a place that our neighbors will walk to just for their daily coffee and a newspaper. We know our patron's names, and they know ours. Out-of-towners visit us to escape the bustle of city life and enjoy a meal under native oak trees. In Southern California, this small-town atmosphere is a unique treasure and we want to protect it.
As long-time waitresses and now the new owners of Mary's Market, we (Heather and Jenny!) are committed to keeping the spirit of Mary's the same as ever. But we need your help to keep this community icon running.
Established in 1922, this historical landmark has been a beacon for the community; warm and welcoming to all. It began as Spartan's Meat and Grocer and became Mary's Market when Irish immigrant Mary Perkins bought it in 1966. She was open seven days a week offering sodas, candies, and advice to the Sierra Madre canyon residents. We are committed to continuing Mary's tradition of delivering true small town charm.
Jenny and Heather met in the fall of 2010 when we began working at Mary's Market. Bonding over our love of coffee, all things vintage, fashion, and music - particularly Ryan Adams. We quickly became inseparable friends. We have worked under two other proprietors over the past seven years and now have the opportunity to own the business that we love so dearly. We are two gals on a mission to feed the souls and bellies of neighbors and friends.
For seven years, we cooked, cleaned, waited, opened, and closed this gem of the Sierra Madre canyon. Almost a hundred years of history and a string of owners later, it's our turn! We are committed to keeping this institution alive. We need your help to maintain our dream and keep Mary's Market thriving. Our Kickstarter goal of $13,500 is the final push we need to make sure we can open our doors and keep them open.
Risks and challenges
Opening a small business is hard any way you slice it. We are prepared to face any number of obstacles. We will initially struggle to afford additional employees, but will work our buns off in the meantime. Our friendship is our biggest asset and our strengths compliment one another. When problems arise, we will have two minds to tackle them. We accept the risks and look forward to the challenges we'll face together.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
