How It Works
Charging your iPhone with Oivo is really easy. Open the two magnetically connected halves and put the iPhone on the Lightning connector. Place the batteries on the metal battery connectors, and finish the job by positioning the other half on top. Congratulations, your iPhone is being charged!

AA Batteries: The Truly Global Power Source
The great thing about AA batteries (単3) is that you can find them everywhere. You probably have at least two sets of batteries at this very moment at home – in your remote control, flashlight or alarm clock.
And when you’re on the go, you can find them literally in any store in any country, from big metropolises like New York, London, and Tokyo, to the most remote villages in Asia and South America. As batteries are a worldwide standard, you don't have to worry about buying converters for different power outlets when travelling.
Another awesome feature – you can easily use rechargeable (both NiMH or NiCd) batteries and never worry about buying new ones!

Oivo recharges your drained battery as quickly as a regular AC charger with 1 amp. Using one set of batteries Oivo recharges your iPhone up to 100%, and there is always some juice left to power your home devices.

It doesn't only charge your iPhone, you can use Oivo also as a stand in both portrait and landscape orientation!
Oivo has the official Apple Lightning connector built inside. It is designed to power the iPhone 5, 5S, and 5C. According to our sources, the soon-to-be-launched iPhone 6 features the same Lighting connector, so Oivo will be compatible with the brand new iPhone as well.
The Magical Magnets
There are 10 neodymium magnets in every Oivo. They hold the two halves tightly together when Oivo is just a quirky key ring, and they keep the AA batteries in place when Oivo is charging. Magnets are strong, but they are smartphone and credit card safe!
Design and Development
We spent ten months of brainstorming, development, and prototyping to bring Oivo to the world. We started from scratch with a challenging goal – to solve the single overarching problem of every smartphone user: the drained battery at the wrong moment.
We wanted to make something really small in size because gadgets are only useful if you have them with you at the moment of need – with you, not back at home or in the car.
We were thinking hard about possible power sources that are available anywhere around the world. The AA batteries were the only logical choice, as they can be easily bought in every store; they are affordable, and you can use them to power the device while you walk, talk, or have a drink.
The Eureka moment came when we realized that we could ditch almost all of the casings and only use the top and bottom parts and connect them with strong magnets. The magnets would then come to serve a double purpose – to hold the two halves together and to hold the batteries in place while charging.
The Geeky Corner
Smartphones require a stable voltage supply between 4.75V and 5.25V. That's why Oivo uses a Texas Instruments Buck-Boost Converter which provides a constant 5V output. The buck-boost converter is based on a fixed frequency, pulse-width-modulation (PWM) controller using synchronous rectification to obtain maximum efficiency.
We are aiming to build Oivo under the IP64 standard. This means complete protection against dust and splash water.
Apple MFi and Manufacturing
We developed Oivo under the Apple MFi (Made for iPhone) program, and Apple has already confirmed our product plan.
Oivo will be manufactured by an Apple licensed factory in Shenzhen, China. We have been working together since April, and we've made sure our charger is ready for mass production. This means we have developed not just a working prototype but actually a device that can be manufactured in large quantities.
We know that hardware products on Kickstarter have a reputation for being late. That's why we invested all our money and already started the gruelling process of making moulds for the plastic parts.
We bootstrapped our way to designing, developing, and making Oivo a mass-production-ready gadget. We've put all our savings into the plastic moulds, but in order to make that final step, we need you.
The minimum order quantity for the factory that will make Oivo is simply too big for us. That's why we are looking for your support. With your backing, we will be able to buy the plastic parts, connectors, electronic components, and circuit boards in bulk, thus bringing the cost down and making Oivo affordable for everybody.
Oivos will be with you before Christmas. We will have two distribution hubs, one in US for the US and Canadian backers and one in Europe for EU and the rest of the world.
But where is the Micro USB?
The process of making a product for Apple under the Apple MFi license is much harder due to numerous standards and policies that have to be met in order to use the official Lightning connectors. That’s why we concentrated our resources on only one version.
If you would like to see the Micro USB version come to light, please support us with the symbolic 2$ pledge, and who knows, maybe we will smash the target goal and offer the Micro USB version as a stretch goal.

Risks and challenges
Hardware products on Kickstarter have a reputation for being late. That's the reason why we waited to launch our campaign until Oivo was not just a working prototype, but actually a gadget ready for mass production. We've been developing it under the Apple MFi program together with a reliable manufacturer that is also licensed as an Apple MFi manufacturer, which means their products meet the highest standards.
However, no project comes without risk and challenges. Oivo will be manufactured in Shenzhen, China, which is the perfect place for manufacturing electronic products, as the whole supply chain is already set in place and manufacturers know what they are doing. By carefully choosing the factory, we made sure to minimise the risk of delay, and we are positive that Oivo will be with you before Christmas.
