DAMELO TODO illuminates a unique alliance born at historic Los Angeles bar Silver Platter when Latina transgender women meet queer performance artists
THE EPIC FINISHING LINE IS WITHIN SIGHT.
DAMELO TODO is a feature documentary about trans resistance - told through an unconventional lens of clublife and performance art. The film focuses on the Silver Platter, a 40-year-old, family owned bar in MacArthur Park that serves a Latina transgender immigrant community. The bar has been a flashpoint of performance, support, and community for over 40 years, and for the past two years it also hosted “Wildness,” a weekly queer club night that showcased drag, contemporary art, and international dance music. Through collaboration and performance, DAMELO TODO explores the relationship between Silver Platter and Wildness - ultimately examining the politics of partying.
THIS PROJECT IS A MAJOR LABOR OF LOVE.
So far, we have been funded largely through IN KIND (DONATED, IE FREE) labor and resources, approximately 57% of the total production budget. To date, we have received approximately 6% of our funding from grants. And we are continuing to apply for grants. BUT that leaves approximately 37% of the budget unfunded! HERE is where YOUR humble contribution could make all the difference.
Money raised through this Kickstarter fundraiser will go directly to cover post-production costs.
DAMELO TODO is at once an innovatively crafted film, and a window to a social movement at a crucial moment in history. It focuses on the Silver Platter as a nexus at the intersection of sweeping change; gentrification, gay marriage, and immigration are hotbed issues that have polarized the city and the nation at large. The film looks closely at how these issues have interlocking effects on the daily lives of trans Latina women, and considers partying as a radical way to build community, exchange information and resources, and produce culture. It looks at the transgender immigrant experience through a progressive political lens, and shows the interconnected issues of race, class, and immigration.
WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW. Due to the timeliness of this project, our goal is to finish within this year (Winter 2010), and in order for that to be possible we MUST raise these funds. While we have managed to magically negotiate all our costs so far on a shoestring budget, certain corners simply cannot be cut in post production. Please help us to accomplish this monumental task!!! TRUST AND BELIEVE IT WILL BE WORTH EVERY PENNY.
