What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

The SPO•3, Solar Powered Outrigger is a completely self-contained solar powered outrigger for most kayaks and canoes. It consists of a frame, solar panel, energy storage module, and electric motor. A quick and simple mounting system allows the SPO•3 to easily attach to most kayaks without any customization to the kayak itself. A gelled nickel metal hydride battery pack gives the craft 6-8 hours of continuous use with out the need to recharge. A 120V charging port can be used to charge the battery more quickly, not relying on the solar panel for charging. Presently we are tooling up for the flotation pod, which is molded fiberglas. The frame is now 50% lighter, making for a more efficient craft. The money raised will be used for two things; one to finish the tooling needed for the mold, and secondly to purchase the parts necessary to start production. Initially, we will be producing in batches of 10 units at a time. All revenue generated will be pumped back in to purchase the next batch of components. With a little momentum, this will build until it is self-perpetuating. Some basic research shows that there is a healthy market for this product. Besides basic recreational use, it has potential for kayak fishing, excursions, touring, and even can provide water access to the disabled or others that have traditionally been unable to access the water. With the help of this campaign, we feel this can be a success.

Risks and challenges

Risk #1 - <<Not able to reach the market.>> We are pursuing traditional marketing tools like trade show and demo tours as well as embracing the digital formats. We have a website, and will be supporting social media platforms. We feel that the appeal and interest in the product will create momentum for sales.

Risk #2 - << Cost control>> We are continually searching for simpler and less expensive production methods. This is value engineering and will be accomplished in a manner that does not reduce the quality of the product.

I have a small interpretive design firm and have been able to schedule time and energy to pursue this project. As this project progresses, I will be able to modify my workload to handle the new project.
