The Game of Mixed Emotions is a fun, simple card game designed to teach kids how to talk about their feelings. Research shows that this type of early emotional eduction makes children happier, healthier and more successful, now and for the rest of their lives.
Mixed Emotions exposes kids to the full spectrum of emotions in a fun, unobtrusive way. It gives them exposure to a wide range of emotions, showing them that people can feel all kinds of emotions and that emotions are only temporary. It not only teaches them how to recognize and understand their own feelings, but the feelings of others as well. And it’s a great conversation starter, and an even better stocking stuffer.
All mixed emotions cards will be shipped to be delivered before the holidays (other rewards will be shipped early next year).
What is The Game of Mixed Emotions?
The Game of Mixed Emotions is a versatile card game designed to be played many different ways. Each of the 48 cards features one of 24 different emotions, one of 12 characters and an example of when someone might feel that specific emotion. The colors of the cards is based on the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, which divides emotions into four categories:
- Red Fire: High Energy, uncomfortable emotions like Mad, Scared, Embarrassed, Hungry, Worried and Frustrated
- Blue Clouds: Low Energy, uncomfortable emotions like Sad, Hurt, Tired, Sick, Shy, and Distracted
- Green Clovers: Low Energy, comfortable emotions like Calm, Patient, Kind, Safe, Peaceful and Grateful
- Yellow Suns: High Energy, comfortable emotions like Joy, Happy, Helpful, Excited, Proud and Brave
Each of the 12 characters of Mixed Emotions display all four different different emotional categories, showing kids that it's alright to feel different kinds of emotions and that emotions are only temporary. The characters are easy to relate to and taking part in all kinds of activities–they just need names! Check out our rewards to find out how you can help.
How to Play
The game is designed to be played a variety of ways and can be as simple or complex as you and your child want. The purpose of the game is to be a fun way to introduce emotional concepts and vocabulary without sacrificing fun. We recommend four games and two conversation starter exercises right out of the box, but there are many other ways to play, and new games coming from our community of players every day!
The Original (2 or more players)
Similar to Uno, each player is dealt five cards and takes turns trying to match either the color or the character on one of their cards with the character in the discard pile. If they can't match, they draw one card. If they have two of the exact same emotion they can play both and if they have the same emotion as what's in the discard pile, they can play it and a bonus card. Play continues until the winner is out of cards!
I've Got a Feeling (2-4 players)
Similar to Go Fish, each player starts with seven cards and takes turns asking if another player has one of the cards in their own hand. If the other player does, they hand it over to the first player and the pair is placed face up on the table and the player may ask again. If not, it's the next players turn, and play continues until one of the players is out of cards!
Memory Match (1 or more players)
Players try to remember where cards are placed in this challenging memory game. Cards are laid out face down on the table and players take turns flipping over cards to get a match. Player with the most matches wins.

"When have you felt...?" Use the cards as a way to talk with you child about when they have felt certain types of emotions, using the examples on the card as a starting point.
If a child is struggling to describe how the feel, have them pick a card. Listen to how they feel and validate their emotions. Don't tell them "not to feel sad" but instead ask them why they feel that way, and how they think the character might solve that problem.
What Really is The Game of Mixed Emotions
The Game of Mixed Emotions is the beginning of a lifelong conversation with your children. It’s not simply a card game, but instead a way to introduce a way of thinking about emotions that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. It’s a framework they’ll be able to turn to whenever they’re trying to understand the way they feel, or whenever they’re trying to better understand someone else. Whether that’s feeling great about a soccer win while empathizing with the other team; or knowing how to explain how they feel in tough situations like death or divorce; or recognizing the difference between stress and anxiety while they’re in school; or handling the transition to college and making the right choices.
We believe this is the start of something big. The Game of Mixed Emotions is just a way to introduce your child to the building blocks of emotional health and education. From there, it's about using the vocabulary to help you child continue the conversation even when you're not there with them.
How do we do that? Well, it starts with talking about emotions with your child on a regular basis. That's where the LoveSnax Lunchbox notes comes in. These little notes use the same visuals and vocabulary to get you child thinking and talking about their emotions every day. We'll be sending some of these cards out with our Helpful Tier and up rewards.
From there, it's about continuing the conversation, at home, at school and beyond. We're planning and in the process of developing a variety of other tools–games, stories, comics, apps–that expand the Mixed Emotions game beyonds the cards and deliver a step-by-step plan to continue your child's emotional education. Why the World Needs The Game of Mixed Emotions
We’re in an exciting and challenging time. Kids are using the internet, mobile devices, and social media earlier and earlier. While this is certainly beneficial in many ways, it also exposes them to increasingly complex emotional problems at a younger and younger age. And many children struggle to parse and communicate these emotions, especially when some are told that the best way to handle their feelings is to “man up” and ignore them, or to not have them in the first place. Childhood anxiety and depression are on the rise, and many parents are struggling to keep up with their kids, just as kids are struggling to explain how they feel.
We’ve done an incredible job adapting to this rise in technology by developing tools, toys, and games to teach our kids how to interact with machines, as even a cursory search on Kickstarter shows. Whether that’s programmable blocks for three year olds, or building kits designs to get girls into engineering and computer science, or robots that dance and draw, or apps that teach kids how to code–we’ve done an incredible job of bringing STEAM education into the home for our kids.
And this is amazing! But what about the other half of the equation? We’re teaching kids how to interact with machines, but are we teaching them how to interact with each other? That's exactly where Mixed Emotions Comes in.
The Psychology Behind the Game
The theory behind The Game of Mixed Emotions is based on research done by The Collaboration for Social Emotional Learning’s (CASEL). The study found that teaching social skills and emotional well-being lowered incidences of anxiety and increased the likelihood that children would graduate college and have a full-time job by age 25. The study found that “participants demonstrated significantly improved social and emotional skills, attitudes, behavior, and academic performance that reflected an 11-percentile-point gain in achievement.” The 2011 report was updated in 2017 and endorsed by the National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development, a commission comprised of distinguished scientists at leading research institutions including Harvard, Columbia, Yale, and The University of Pennsylvania.

Who We Are
Theresa Claire (Founder) Theresa is the creator of Mixed Emotions and LoveSnax®, cards and games that teach kids to recognize their emotions, then learn to act appropriately in response to those emotions. She is a proud graduate of the University of Connecticut and Norwalk Community College, an active member of the Junior League, and St. Luke’s Church in Darien, CT, but her greatest honor is being mom to her three amazing boys.
Dr. Melanie Pearl (Contributor) is a licensed psychologist in CT and NY and a nationally certified school psychologist. She has a focus anxiety and depression, learning disorders, attention and executive functioning, social skills, autism and developmental delays, early childhood development and education, parenting, and trauma.

We started out selling The Game of Mixed Emotions earlier this year to parents and teachers throughout our local Connecticut community. They had a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for the game, and we saw similar excitement when we brought the idea to toy stores in the region. But the feedback they gave us was that the game had to be less expensive, and the only way to do that is by placing a larger order with one of our suppliers. And that's what this Kickstarter is for! To fund out first large order, which will help us start selling at a reasonable price to toy stores and through our online shop.
Risks and challenges
As with any Kickstarter campaign, one concern is whether we will be able to deliver the rewards. We've already printed this cards in smaller batches there's no reason we won't be able to print them again. This campaign is to fund our first larger run of cards, which will bring down production costs significantly. The other campaign rewards are just as easy to print and fulfill.
Will I get these by Christmas?
That's exactly our plan. We can't 100% guarantee anything, but we are very confident that we will be able to deliver all Mixed Emotions cards before the holidays. We've partnered with a great printer and we'll be packing and shipping the cards ourselves. Other campaign rewards will be delivered after the holidays, early next year.
Can I get the game outside of the US?
For this campaign, we're just shipping in the US. But we'll be shipping to the rest of the world from our online store after the campaign ends. Just subscribe to our newsletter (www.snoito.me) or back the campaign and we'll let you know as soon as we're shipping outside the US.
