UPDATE--Stretch Goals: Thank you for helping us reach our initial goal! We're announcing the following stretch goals. More details at the bottom.
Purnaa: Fashion for Change
Hi. Welcome to our campaign to launch a new, limited-edition Purnaa collection of socially conscious apparel and accessories. We believe fashion can be a powerful force for change. Therefore, Purnaa's merchandise is crafted in Nepal by survivors of modern slavery and exploitation. At Purnaa we are passionate about great design, environmentally sustainable products, ethical manufacturing, and the empowerment of people to brighter futures and fulfilled lives.
Purnaa is a social enterprise, which means that we gauge our success by the lives we impact. All of our profits are reinvested to further our social mission of creating jobs for survivors of exploitation, such as human trafficking, bonded labor, and discrimination because of caste, religion, or disease.
At Purnaa, employees receive fair wages, literacy and skills training, health care, and employer matched savings in a positive work environment. To date, Purnaa has manufactured for other fashion companies. In order to create even more employment opportunities for survivors, we are launching this first Purnaa Collection.

Why does Purnaa operate in Nepal?
Nepal is one of the least developed countries in the world. Nepal is ranked #5 of 178 countries on the global slavery index for highest incidence of modern slavery. It has over 40% unemployment, with 1 in 10 Nepalis having already left the country to look for work elsewhere. The result is a population extremely vulnerable to exploitation. Our campaign rewards are carefully selected items from our first product line. Each is made at Purnaa from environmentally sustainable materials such as organic cotton bamboo jersey and up-cycled sari material. Furthermore, every item is accented with a quote about social justice
Fashion and a sense of freedom have always been linked, and come together seamlessly in the Rajkumar cap. Made of high quality stretch cotton and printed with our limited edition justice quote. These caps are reversible, comfortable, and stylish.
Laxmi Braided Scarf
Mix things up this season with the Laxmi scarf. The unique braids of beautiful up-cycled sari material softly accent the luxuriously soft organic bamboo cotton body to create a new twist on the infinity scarf. The Purnaa justice quote discreetly printed on the body adds interest and purpose to a perfect accessory for any season.
Men’s Dadhi T-shirt
Named for and crafted by Purnaa’s Master Tailer, the Dadhi is not your average t-shirt. Functional and stylish, this shirt is made from organic 70% bamboo / 30% cotton jersey. You'll love its natural moisture-wicking and anti-microbial properties that prevent you from smelling like a locker-room and its sustainable, super-soft bamboo fibers that get more cuddly with every wash.
Women’s Pawana T-shirt
Our organic, ethically sourced bamboo cotton Pawana T-shirt with up-cycled sari pocket and soft luxe feel will earn its way to staple status in your wardrobe. Wear it with your favorite boyfriend jeans for a day at the beach or dress it up with a blazer and heels for a night on the town.
Anita Canvas Leather Bag
All the space you need, in a style you’ll love, dress up any outing with the Anita bag. Constructed with sturdy cotton canvas, all natural premium leather, and up-cycled traditional Nepali sari fabric, the Anita bag features interior and exterior pockets for easy organization and a limited edition Purnaa quote embossed on a leather patch on the back panel.
Colors and Quotes
Most products are available in four colors. Each color is matched to a quote from an individual that championed social action.*
- Edmund Burke: Green
- William Lloyd Garrison: Blue
- Benjamin Franklin: Rust
- R. Solnit: Blush
* The Rajkumar Cap is available in black with the Garrison quote and grey with the Burke quote. All Anita Bag's will have the Solnit quote.
Stretch Goal Details
Employee’s Children Childcare - $40,000
We also want to pay for childcare for our employees with younger kids. If we can reach $40,000 on this campaign, we can use the profits generated to create a fund that will fully cover childcare for all the Purnaa family pre-schoolers for a year.
Purnaa Online Store - $50,000
It is a lot of work to create new designs every season, manage a store, and handle logistics; but if we see sufficient demand on Kickstarter, we’ll launch a Purnaa Online Store this Fall. We’ll need to hire some more people to help us with fulfillment and marketing, so we need to stretch for $50,000. So, get your friends to pledge and convince us that there ought to be an online store where you can get these products anytime and continue changing lives in Nepal.
Risks and challenges
Having conducted business in Nepal as a contract manufacture, we know all about overcoming obstacles. Delays involving sourcing, production, and shipping can happen, but in this case, we are well prepared to tackle any challenges that come our way.
For starters, Purnaa IS the manufacturer. Every item in this campaign is made in our factory in Kathmandu. Secondly, we have limited reward quantities and set aside time in our production schedule to ensure that our estimated delivery date is achievable. Finally, we have sought out and established relationships with local suppliers for all of the material used in this campaign, minimizing the risk of supply chain problems.
In the event of production delays (Nepal is a place where the unexpected does happen sometimes), we promise to communicate frequently and clearly with backers and make this project our top priority until all rewards have been fulfilled.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
