About this project
(And any other Heroclix game!)
2 dimensional thinking only gets you so far!
Introducing the 3D Battle Board! Designed for use with Star Trek Heroclix Tacitcs game pieces it puts you in the middle of the action!
Our gaming group came up with the idea of this 3D board and then set about designing it and creating a prototype.
Our board is made up of 3 clear lexan sheets with a 1-1/2" grid etched into it. The 4 resin corner posts snap into place to make it a sturdy 3D playing field!
Use your ships and create fantastic battles!
3 double sided maps that are included are to be poster printed and will fit perfectly on your 3D Battle Board. One side is a generic future office / bank type building, that can be used for any heroclix type game.
The other side is meant to be a zombie robot type of structure, kinda like a giant cube.
We would love to make more maps to go with the set in the future. We created the maps using ProFantasy Campaign Cartographer, a really excellent program for RPG map making.
Using our 3D printer, and equipment from our local hackerspace www.txrxlabs.org, we made the parts and had a lot of fun playing.
Now we want to share these boards with everyone! To be successful in this endeavor, we need to be able to mass produce all the parts. That is where you come in!
By pre-ordering a 3D Battle Board set, you enable us to create the die cut molds and make production runs of all the parts. Buying the boards and parts in large quantities enables us to keep the prices to a reasonable level.
Use the Battle Boards for tactical combat, or for role-playing in the Star Trek universe! Anything is possible with these accessories.
Modify existing pieces and recreate your favorite battles from any recent movies. See what the outcome should have been!
Included with the $55 Pledge Level :
- (3) clear lexan boards
- (4) resin cast corner posts
- A magnetic "Regular Station" accessory to float between the boards
- A "Regular Moon" accessory
- (3) double sided maps that fit on the 3D Battle Board
- House rules to use when playing with Heroclix figures
The clear boards have a 1 1/2" grid etched underneath, with grid id's along the edges.
The corner posts snap into CNC machined grooves on the coners of the boards to hold it securely in place.
The Regular Station & Moon were designed on the computer and 3D Printed. After making molds, the parts are to be resin cast.
Included with the $30 Pledge Level:
- (1) Federal Type Ship Battle Board
- (1) War-bird Type Ship Battle Board
- (1) Warrior Type Ship Battle Board
- House rules to use when playing with Heroclix figures
Each ship will be full color printed on corrugated plastic boards, then die cut for assembly.
Each piece is notched and slotted to form the Ship Battle Board, ready for action!
The custom Adventure Tokens are made just for this project.
They are from www.adventuretokens.com, the site where we will be selling these boards once our Kickstarter project takes off.
Check out the Youtube Video for the Tokens: http://youtu.be/ZgoqGggsuoI
They will be 3D printed masters and then resin cast.

Really happy to be mentioned by these guys! Check out the article.
Lots of views thanks to them.
The more pledges we get, the more extras we can give out!
We will update everyone as we reach more stretch goals/

Risks and challenges
The main risks and challenges will depend on the quantity of boards we need to make. Our initial $10,000 goal is geared towards a run of around 130 board sets.
For a production run of 100 to 1000, the first thing to do will be to finalize the die cut molds and get them on order. Along with this we order the Ship Battle Boards from the printers, and the double sided maps. The next next step will be to get final 3D prints of the station & moon, order the mold material & make the molds for the corner parts and accessory pieces.
Then we will make all the parts, final quality inspection on the whole package, and finalize shipping boxes. Once we have a quality, polished Battle Board set, we get it all in house and ready to start shipping!
If we go above 1000 units, production and assembly will have to ramp up a little. Also the Stretch Goals will have to be fulfilled as well.
Above 1000 the main thing that would be changed is the resin molded parts would be injection molded. More cost for the initial molds, but spread out over more parts to produce. We have quotes from various vendors in case we have to go that route. The die-cut Ship Battle Boards would still be done the same way, just more molds for those and a larger production line.
We don't expect the shipping date to change, unless the order quantities get extreme. But that is part of the risks and challenges. We will update everyone our progress at each stage as the project progresses. We will ship out based on what order the boards were pledged, if we have to stagger shipments.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
