Ancient Mediterranean Trade and War map is created based on actual cities (some of them still have the same name now) and trade routes at the end of 3rd century BC. That was the time of Punic wars - the time of rising and falling for civilizations of Rome, Carthage, Egypt, and Greece.

There are three main phases in the game Event, Trade and Move/War:

Trade And War - Ancient Mediterranean history of creation started from my obsession with strategic computer games and board games. I have three sons - 20,12 and 10, and we played many and many hours in Civilization ©, 7 Wonders ©, Settlers of Catan ©, Smallworld ©, Carcassonne ©, etc...

When I read a book "The Atlas of World Archaeology" by Paul G. Bahn couple years ago my attention was attracted by a map of communications and trade in the ancient Mediterranean world. All these trade routes carried the power of ancient civilizations to communicate with each other. Each city had unique trading goods to produce - grain, glass, pottery, metal, and olives. Merchants used ships and caravans to travel between cities and civilizations. The trade was dangerous but rewarding.

Another interesting story that I read was about Scipio Africanus, who defeated Hannibal in the Second Punic War. Punic wars are the history of how Roman civilization became the Empire. When Hannibal besieged and captured the Roman cities, the fate of Rome seemed unsteady and uncertain. Nevertheless, Rome overcame fate and became the main force in the Mediterranean for thousands of years.

I came with the understanding of map and the idea of the game very fast but I tried for a year and half the particular game parts and design ideas. It took many prints and many buys in art stores and many 3D prints in my basement. Multiple plays with different versions of the game with my sons and friends helped to make game enjoyable and captivating. Then it was trials with different players in board game cafes and board game shows.

The art, coins, cards, box design, everything is based on real history of 3d century BCE. Each civilization - Carthage, Egypt, Greece, and Rome - presented with own version of art and drawings so players will become familiar and intrigued by the history of these vast empires.

Thanks to my friends for the advice and support in a long way to this Kickstarter happened! Thanks to test play players for giving feedback so necessary to make this game better!

Trade and War - Ancient Mediterranean board game is based on real historical facts of trade and war activity happened in 3d century BCE in the Mediterranean Sea. This was a dramatic, rapidly changing period of Mediterranean history, time of civilizations building and destroying. Time of Punic wars. This history will define narrative but not each unique play. Players will determine the history outcome each game. Let's look at four major factions of this time:

The Carthage Republic was a trading empire with vast lands of northeastern Africa and Iberian Peninsula south to Ebro river.

Egypt kingdom was a part of Alexander the Great Empire under Ptolemy kings with important trade and cultural influence.

Hellenistic Greece was still dreaming about the legacy of Alexander the Great and Greek empire past.

The Roman Republic was a rising force in the northern part of Mediterranean with impressive technological and military advances.
