"We wanted to make a film about a flawed relationship, where we try to understand how much you can really know one another. We hope to deliver an emotional story through a skewed perspective that is true to life. It doesn't all have to be kitchen sink, there's cake too!"
Black Cherry is a short film about Tim and Chloe, a once loving couple. Tim struggles with writer's block, while Chloe's frustration with Tim leads her to find other means of excitement, namely the village 'Dessert Club'.
Tim's imagination has long since dried up. It's when a sequence of surreal, obscure and peculiar events occur that Tim takes action to find out more about Chloe's activities. When he discovers the true nature of the Dessert Club his imagination is reinvigorated, and they must face the truth of their reality.
A Surreal Reality
We wanted to create a film that told a simple story within a real environment but told through a surreal perspective. Think 'Kill List', 'Burn After Reading', and a soundscape inspired by 'The Returned' and 'Berberian Sound Studio'.
While Black Cherry is a realistic story about a failing relationship, not everything that occurs around Tim and Chloe, as their world crumbles into chaos, is quite within the realms of normality. It's this bending of perception and blurring the lines between the real world and the imagination that we want to explore. The world of the film we create doesn't have to have it's roots based solely in the world we know; a few roots have dipped into a stranger pool.
Surreal things happen around us in normal life. You have only to take a look behind closed doors in sleepy villages to discover 'Dessert Clubs' aren't quite as advertised, and gas-masks are the new trend.
Tim is a creative mind stuck for a solution. Tim's passion and love stems from his writing. So when his imagination withers, so does everything else In his life. It's only when something inexplicable happens that he begins to rediscover it.
Chloe is an inherently extroverted woman, constantly searching for excitement and experience. Tim's passion for writing, and thus life, was what had attracted her initially. Tim's inward nature eventually pushes Chloe to look elsewhere for that missing adventure.
Peter lives next door to Tim and Chloe. The host of the village Dessert Club. His actions are what spark Tim's intrigue in the goings on in the village. An older man, his blasé actions might have landed him in hotter water than he's used to.
The Team Behind the Cherry.
We're a host of soon-to-graduate film students from Newport Film School, Wales. Black Cherry is our final graduation piece. Collaborating with Production Design students from Cardiff Atrium and other INDUSTRY professionals and creative minds, Black Cherry is in good collective hands.
"When I read, I enjoy finding characters and situations which add an extra flavour to reality with absurdity and parody. Film is a medium which lends itself naturally to the manipulation of the usual world around us, so in Directing a film such as Black Cherry, the opportunity to create this flavour is one not to miss."
"The script and characters' disposition spoke to me on a personal level, and the extraordinary circumstances which they find themselves in, excited me for the sheer visual possibilities and challenges I could set myself. My philosophy is to capture and create as many of these images in camera as possible."
"Black Cherry is a film which incorporates an emotional and very real tale of the trials and troubles that often confront even the best of marriages. However, it's not without some intriguing differences. From a writer's perspective, this offered the freedom to be quite creative, whilst also still being able to form characters with emotion. As a result the interesting and creative themes of Black Cherry, mixed with the emotional conflict of marriage, really made it quite a challenge and a pleasure to write."
"Having a surreal and near ridiculous twist on an otherwise regular, realistic world is the whole reason I became interested in film. That strange sense of escapism, or seeing another world that's the same, but comparable to your own; that's what I hope Black Cherry will be. I want people to finish watching it feeling bewildered, yet loving it."
But what will it look like?
We're trying to create a look for Black Cherry that evokes its peculiar qualities. This means a few equally peculiar things need to be built, bought and hired.
Tim and Chloe's Cherry Tree poses a challenge. Being a key feature of our destructive finale, it needs to be designed and built to ensure the spectacular image we hope to capture and show to you all. Our talented Production Designers are on the Tree's case.
The seemingly quiet village where Tim, Chloe, and Peter live, needs to be as chocolate box and quaint as possible. With Post Offices, traditional hardware shops, country pubs, tiny cottages and old manor houses at our disposal, the secret under-belly will stand out all the more.
Auditions were a fantastic success. With contracts soon to be signed, we're ready for rehearsals to begin.
Where does your help go?
Every penny pledged towards Black Cherry goes towards making it exactly as we envision. Without your help, we wont be able to achieve many of our ambitions to make something unique.
We've raised some of the budget ourselves, but are Kickstarting to try and raise what we can't. If we don’t reach our goal, then we can't afford the key elements to make it happen.
£800 Cast - With such an emotionally varied film, we want a brilliant cast of people to carry it out. We want to be able to pay for their consistent and exhausting efforts.
£700 Locations - With several locations required, it unfortunately doesn't always come cheap.
£580 Set Design, Props &Costume - With such a wide variety of different locations required, and some very specific commissions needed to be created, a fair amount of money will go to ensuring everything looks the part.
£600 Camera Equipment - We're fortunate enough to have access to a camera, but there's still a lot left to rent! Lenses, wind machines, and grip equipment all add up.
Late Feb/early March - Principle photography. Expect to see loads of productions stills and videos of the film taking shape.
Mid March - We'll have the rough cut in shape and ready. This is where we'll start to see what the film looks like.
Mid April - PICTURE LOCK! The film's images are locked down and done, onto a brilliant sound score by out talented sound team.
May 18th - Our finished film is screened to the University.
June ~7th - Newport film School's grand Cinema screening of the year's work. Including Black Cherry of course!
July onwards - Festivals! We'll be running through various festival circuits across the UK, and many more internationally.
Any contributions are received gratefully, and will go a long way to making Black Cherry more than just an idea. As much as it is a cliche, we really can't do this without you! For your generosity we have a varied selection of rewards so please take a peek.
Keep updated with our development, production, and progress on Facebook and Twitter. With constant updates, videos, and pictures you can slowly see the film take shape.
For any questions, queries, or inquiries please feel free to email Jordan at email@example.com.
Risks and challenges
Filmmaking would be far too boring without its inherent risks and challenges. We'll always be doing our uppermost to make Black Cherry as striking, and as unexpected as we can. There will always be a few spanners thrown into the works, but we aren't without preparation.
Your contribution and support will be invaluable in securing and ensuring the multitude of individual elements that will come together throughout production and post-production, things we otherwise are financially unable to secure ourselves.
We're definitely trying to push the boat out with what we're striving to achieve with Black Cherry's visuals, story, and execution. We want to make something with great impact in every aspect. Something people will remember, especially you, the funders who are taking part in such a crucial way.
With a strong team behind us including Production Designers from Cardiff Atrium, Bristol and Indiana based Composers, Professional Sound Mixers and a host of other talented crew, we're confident to do this film and its subject justice.
