Varsity Punks has come a long way!
This feature film is 95% done and this crowdfunding campaign is the final stretch! The only things left to do are Color Correction and Sound Design.
We invite you to be part of this bold indie endeavor by contributing to receive incentives that will bring you closer to the moviemaking glamour, ESPECIALLY if this is your kind of movie!
This isn’t your basic teen flick! It's many things, full of dimension and authenticity:
- Teen Comedy
- Sports drama
- Running movie
- Coming of age story
- Latino film
All these elements are woven together to portray a world that's familiar, yet not often seen on the big screen. Why? Because it focuses on SUBCULTURES. That's the beauty of independent films -- you get a glimpe into a culture from a more personal and refreshing perspective. It's not a film run by business men in suits who are looking to play it safe. We are BOLD, our story is BOLD, and the way we produced this movie is BOLD!
- When star quarterback, AJ Montoya, breaks his hand, his only hope is to team up with his longtime rivals – the cross country team, a group of nerds and misfits with potential for high school glory!
- Anthony Solorzano - Director
- Brandon A. Lopez - Producer
- Dwjuan F. Fox - Producer
- Isael Hermosillo - Co-Producer
- Francisco J. Reyes - Co-Producer
- William F. Vasquez - Co-Producer
Writer/director Anthony Solorzano and his team are all from the same hometown, El Monte, CA. Anthony had been writing screenplays without any representation, when he decided to take charge of his career and produce a film. He first called up high school buddies, Isael and Brandon, to build the business plan and the structure of a movie company. Then soccer buddy, Frank, came in as they started creating content and local buzz on social media. William then joined to help execute the preparations before production. Dwjuan, an independent producer and AFI grad, came aboard as the experienced pro to make sure these hometown buddies could produce a movie of the highest quality.
Art is about using your limited resources to create something beautiful.
The only way we were going to pull off a production this eleborate, was if we got the support of the people - our family, friends, and local community. Check out these SCENES...
- FOOTBALL GAME - Locals came out with their families to cheer on an imaginary football game in exchange for burgers and nachos.
- HALLOWEEN PARTY - We asked our friends to bust out their costumes in the middle of July...til sunrise.
- CROSS COUNTRY MEET - We borrowed uniforms from local schools and had a bunch of kids come out to run.
This allowed us to save money on locations, extras, and crew. We shot the movie all around the San Gabriel Valley and other parts of Los Angeles.
EfrenRamirez is COACH MENLO, the lovable loser who coaches the Monte Valley boys' cross country team. You know him as Pedro from NapoleonDynamite, but Coach Menlo is as different from Pedro as El Monte is from Preston, Idaho. Efren brought a likable vulnerability to a flawed character who's searching for direction.
Noel Gugliemi is COACH CRUZ, the assistant football coach and most popular teacher on campus. Noel shines with authenticity and adds grit to the football culture shown in the story.
WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?
Color Correction & Sound Design: These are the finishing processes that bring out the best from all the movie's elements. Our cinematographer shot on professional RED cameras allowing color correction to expose the full potential of our cinematography and correct any unwanted imperfections. Sound design will build the various detailed sounds of the world on screen.
It is our duty to ensure that this movie is polished so that is LOOKS GREAT and SOUNDS GREAT!
Without these elements, even a well shot film will feel amateur.
These funds are going directly to hire the technical experts who have the fancy equipment and experience to give this movie that professional finish!
The Varsity Punks adventure is just beginning! There's still premiere celebrations, festivals, and movie merchandise to enjoy. Our incentives allow you to join that excitement so that we can celeberate the succes of this movie TOGETHER!
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges attached to the completion of the project are minimal. The movie is completely shot and edited already, and the colorist and sound designers have already been chosen, so a successful Kickstarter campaign would result in a completed movie ready for distribution.
Therein lie the main challenges related to the release of the film. Obtaining distribution is always a challenge for independent films. We have prepared alternative strategies to traditional distribution that involve self-distribution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
