The Pool Buoy is a pretty simple concept: it's an umbrella that floats in the swimming pool (or really any body of water), bringing you shade wherever you may float.
My family and I enjoy spending time outside. After my girls were born, I realized I wanted a way to shade them from the sun while they were playing in the pool. Skin cancer runs in my wife's family, so I wanted to do everything I could to protect my girls from the sun while still letting them be kids. I looked around and I searched online for something that would do the trick. I couldn't find anything, so I set out to build it.
The initial design was a pop up canopy resting mostly on the side of the pool, with one leg balanced on a float in the water. It was bulky, hard to set up, and easy to knock over. It just did not work. I decided that rather than a canopy, a floating umbrella would be much easier to set up and keep afloat.
A few months later, I met Matt. He's our lead designer and the co-inventor. I introduced him to the idea and he said, "Let's draw it up." He and I tinkered with more than a dozen designs and countless revisions before creating the Pool Buoy we know today.
WHAT EXACTLY IS THE POOL BUOY?
The Pool Buoy is an 18-inch floating disc with five cupholders that attaches to a plastic arm, extending down into the water about two feet. A plastic-coated weight attaches to the bottom of the arm and gives the buoy its stability. The specially-sourced umbrella's pole is made of aluminum so it won't rust in the water, and it's seven feet of UV-rated fabric provides ample room for multiple people to gather and enjoy the shade. The entire unit is designed to be durable, but lightweight.
The Pool Buoy is perfect for any body of water with more than 2 feet of water, including the lake. Keep the buoy on the boat, and when you're ready to cool off, pop it in the water and you're all set to relax!
SUPPORT OUR CAMPAIGN (PRETTY PLEASE)
Our goal is to raise $75,000 to help fund our project. With the funds we raise, we will purchase our final injection mold, meet our manufacturing commitments, and fill our first orders. Getting funded means our components would be made, shipped, and assembled, so Pool Buoys will be ready to float this May.
Please consider supporting our campaign. We know you'll be happy to float along with us, not to mention the awesome rewards we have ready for our backers.

Risks and challenges
With the simplicity of our design, we do not anticipate too much in the way of production delays. However, setbacks can always occur. We have sourced the parts for the Pool Buoy already, bringing the highest quality materials to the table, while aiming to keep the MSRP down for our end-user. The manufacturers have assured us they have the ability and capacity to meet our needs.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
