Backer Update #28-Beta units have shipped!

Hi Backers,

Happy Holidays!

This brief update is to let you know we’ve sent out a batch of our pilot units to our Kickstarter Beta Testers today. We received a great turnout and response to our invitations and have backers participating from the U.S. and around the world. Thanks to each and every one of you who has been able  agree to help with this step!

Here’s a quick update on development and manufacturing:

Software We’ve been very busy testing to make sure that the software is stable enough to ship to backers for use. One of the key issues we encountered was making sure that the “over-the-air” update process works seamlessly and can download software updates wirelessly from our server. Improvements we will continue in other areas as well including: the UI, touch scrolling, and navigation smoothness and speed. We’ll be listening carefully to the critical feedback from our Beta testers and our dedicated QA team in an effort to incorporate as much feedback as possible.

Certification Testing After our last round of EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) testing, we discovered we had to make some revisions to the PCBA and re-submit units to the certification lab for FCC, CE and C-Tick testing again. This will take around 3 weeks to complete and get final approval if all goes well.

Packaging and Testing We just received new samples of the final packaging from our vendor and will be running environmental and transportation testing with the packaging this week. (Beta Testers, you’re Instacubes are in less-than-final packaging, but they are shipping safely packed.)

Tooling The tooling has been finished and approved. The next step is to approve master color samples of the paint and plastic.

We’re excited to get these units out and will start sharing feedback from backers and the Beta testing.

Have a great week!

- The Instacube Team

Does anyone still use Instagram? I'm going to have to dust off my account and fire it back up by the time this thing comes around.

I've sent 3 messages for you, guys. I'm waiting my answer for 4 months already.

does anyone have a contact email so I can find out if my beta unit (I assume the "early adopter special" tier is the beta tier) was even shipped, because i never received any shipping information.

So can I expect my money back ??

It has been over a year ...and we just keep getting told that it is "coming". When will you ship this is becoming a joke.

@Todd Got my $ back, and "whining" made it happen. But keep on supporting a super lame company, not to much positive stuff to say about D2M.

    12. Wes on December 16, 2013

I was under the impression that as a backer, we were guaranteed to be beta testers. so now i am upset that I do not have my instacube in my hands right now.

    13. Tanner Lubuk on December 14, 2013

Still glad I filled a dispute against D2M months ago and got my money back :)

Hey to those who got the beta units. Did you get a confirmation email? I submitted my forms but I didn't get a response

      Hello Everyone,

I have my Beta Unit if anyone has any questions or would like me to share anything please find me on twitter @simonhodgkiss

So far I'm impressed with the device and there does seem to be a number of software issues nothing too major tho.

    16. Steve Black Jr. on December 12, 2013

      Other Backers,

I am received my beta unit today. It's pretty cool! The software is probably the weakest part, but that can be fixed! It kind of reminds me of the Pebble at first... anyways... I can't wait to take the cube into work and have it on my desk. It does what it is advertised to do... display your Instagram photos or tags. Anyways, I'm mostly posting to let you know that D2M was not lying about sending out units, nor are they crooks in trying to "take" your money with no product in site. The beta Instacube worked right out of the box, and while a little buggy, has been running all day showing pictures! It's pretty exciting. If you want to see pictures of the cube, you can look at my Twitter, which is @draggingalake (same Instagram name too).

I've backed over 30+ Kickstarters and I've had others be more late than Instacube. I think a lot of people don't understand that your backing an idea here and Kickstarter is not a store... so don't treat it like one.

      Thanks for reading!

Good news that it is now under Beta testing, if possible I would like to be one of the tester too.
I can't help but thinking when I will ever get the final product, it was intended as a birthday gift however it seems there is no hope of getting it by this year. I wish when it delivers, instagram is still a popular app...

    18. ._. on December 12, 2013

I received my beta test unit at work today. I've encountered a few bugs so far, but all-in-all it is operating rather smoothly straight out of the box. My co-workers are really impressed and can't wait until they can buy their own! I will post pictures on my Instagram feed @isolife for anyone who is interested.

    19. Todd Sherman on December 11, 2013

@Jessie @Michael Wrong - being a beta tester is not the main point of Kickstarter. Go read Kickstarter's own works on this topic. It would probably help better set your expectation.

Being constructive is not whining. Be as critical as you want in the comments but if you want a refund, whining about it here won't make it happen.

    20. Alex Andrews on December 10, 2013

I'm not going to ask for a refund but I have lost love with this project. I feel like the instacube is going to be an outdated piece of tech if/when it is delivered. Not everyone can succeed with everything I guess. This was going to be a cool device in 2012, doesn't work for me in 2014.

    21. Mark Wolf on December 10, 2013

You still have my support, look forward to the final result.
I have just changed address so please reconfirm shipping details once the products are ready to roll.
I note complaints about a lack of transparency. Personally I believe D2M is working hard on this but maybe a greater investment should have gone into building a relationship with your backers early on. This would have built up more support and avoided much of the criticism, some of which is deserved. Not too late to achieve this (beta testing was a good idea).

    22. Peter Frykman on December 10, 2013

      So close, keep pushing along!

      Amen Michael Lewis.

@toddsherman, This is a comment section right? Not all comments have to be stroking D2M. And Todd, your kinda whining in your comment.

      D2M SUCKS

Brandon Smith on December 9, 2013

You guys suck more every update! So glad I got my refund months ago.

    25. Todd Sherman on December 9, 2013

Kickstarter does not offer refunds. That is between you and D2M so taking it up with them would be more productive than whining in the comment section. I've never had a project deliver on time and the more technologically complex they are, they more late then tend to be. I'm hesitantly optimistic that Instacubes will actually show up at my house one day. D2M, I'd like you all to share more substantial evidence of progress opposed to just write-up. Post a scan of your FCC paperwork submission, as beta testers to post a video on youtube, etc.

    26. Matthew on December 9, 2013

Refund please. I really don't care for this project anymore and haven't for a long time. To be honest you have tainted kickstarter for me and I won't be finding anymore projects.

      you guys are still crooks.

    28. Matt Wakeman on December 9, 2013

Can we please get some kind of timeline? Other - more organised kickstarter projects - share a google spreadsheet showing their project plan allowing their backers to see what is happening and how they are progressing to the plan. This transparent approach is really appreciated.

@Simon: Looking forward to hearing what you think of the beta device. As a fellow backer, I am eager to learn if the wait was worth it. You have a new follower on Twitter.

    30. Simon Hodgkiss on December 9, 2013

@Thomas + Others, I might do a review & YouTube videos etc if anyone has any ideas I'd like to hear from you! If there's demand I'm up for it, you'll be able to find me on twitter @SimonHodgkiss :)

    32. Marc Dubach on December 9, 2013

I think it really would be a good idea that the beta-testers shared their experiences here! After more than a year we finally get to see something. So Instacube and beta-testers let us see what happens! Bij # or at this blog.

    33. Thomas J Weiser on December 9, 2013

Thanks @Simon! Do you (and other beta testers) have a twitter or something we can follow? I am eager to see the thing in other peoples hands!

Thanks for the updates, cant wait to get my 2 Insta-cubes whenever they finish!

      What i need to do?

    39. Jeremy Chien on December 9, 2013

Loving the updates. Thanks for the hard work and don't let these haters keep hating. Life happens, we all get screwed. Thanks for trying to make it right!!
