Update from Instacube

Hi Backers!

We’ve been making great progress and are now about 2 weeks away from a pilot build of Instacube, scheduled the week of November 11.

Software development is going well and we’re making final tweaks before calling a feature freeze on this version for the pilot build. We have been finalizing the user interface to improve streaming speed, navigation, and the slideshow experience. There are also other important system improvements, such as how the system handles Wi-Fi hot spots and image caching. We are also testing the backend system to ensure we can send you software updates to the Instacube and release new features regularly in the future.

Our UX designers have been making modifications to ensure that the out-of-the-box experience will be smooth, seamless and intuitive for any user. Changes have included everything from fonts, iconography and menu navigation, to how the carousel is presented. You can see in the screenshot below that the carousel now shows the latest image directly from the Instagram streams.

We’re excited about these changes and look forward to your feedback.

On the manufacturing side, final tooling modifications are in progress and we expect to make new plastic parts in two weeks. We are adding a foot on the back of the unit to increase stability and we’re modifying the internal mechanical structure to improve how we secure the components in place and ensure that the Instacube can pass reliability and quality requirements.

Here are a couple of photos of the tool for the back housing.

Packaging samples are also being made this week for transportation and storage testing.

Beta Test

We’re excited to tell you we will soon be shipping the pilot units to Kickstarter backers who will be invited to participate in our Beta Test. Getting user feedback will be critical in helping us refine the product and involving our backers is very important to us.

We are putting together our plan for selecting participants and collecting feedback to ensure we have an effective system for capturing and incorporating this data. More information on the how and what will be coming very soon.

Thanks again for your continued support,

The Instacube Team

Avoid the scarcity mindset that causes tunnel vision, and you will be able to get on to doing it.

How do i submit my new address for delivery? I have a two year contract at new place hoping ill get the not so insta-cube by then?

    8. Julian N on October 30, 2013

@Joe @Tom: Yup, this is definitely a surprise. Looks like they might actually come through with this!

@Instacube Team: Thanks for the update. I'll stop badmouthing you for a while. ;)

@Brian: I've backed 13 projects so far. About half of them shipped on time and most of the others shipped within three months of the estimated delivery time. This is the only one that has slipped over six months. So "NEVER ... on time" is quite a bit of an exaggeration.

    9. Tom Ryan on October 29, 2013

I agree with Joe. It will be a nice surprise when this shows up...good, solid update too.

Good to see the photos. Thanks for the update.

Since news said that Instagram is going to show advertisement in our neews feed, I was wondering if you maybe can implement the flick API. That way we may access thousand of grat photographs without ads. That would be great. I mean, who wants ads running on a digital photo frame?

    13. CK on October 29, 2013

Since instagram supports video now, can instacube still handle it?

    14. ._. on October 28, 2013

Fantastic update! The UI looks nice and clean and adding a foot is a great idea. I can't wait to have this on my desk at work!

    15. Rob Kubasko on October 28, 2013

Very concise, meaningful update. The comments so far reflect it too. It's nice to see positive comments outnumber the negative ones for once. Products are always hard to see the light of day even without management mistakes. Looking forward to these showing up one day... hopefully D2M can get the majority of the production manufacturing in before the Lunar New Year early next year.

@Joe I'm with you on this. If it shows up, great, if not, eh.

    17. Brian LaPan on October 28, 2013

Obviously a lot of Kickstarter noobs here.

I have NEVER received a kickstarted project that included manufacturing on time. I know that the page doesn't want to say that, but it has to be the rarest of the rare occurrence here. I'm still waiting (patiently) for items that were supposed to be delivered 2 holiday season's ago. It's how this seems to work.

So far, none of the projects I've backed have failed to fulfill. And I don't expect this one to fail, either.

I'd prefer that the product is well made, designed AND delivered complete. I still love the concept and am looking forward to receiving mine when it becomes available.

      Keep the faith.

Nice one. New video of UI on the way?

Great update - looking forward to this...

    20. Joe Sergeant on October 28, 2013

Not even mad anymore. It'll be a nice surprise when one turns up in the future. Like a parcel you forgot you ordered.

    21. Nikolas Reitz on October 28, 2013

Keep my fingers crossed that it will emerge into reality

    22. Scott Paterson on October 28, 2013

Thanks for the update. Would love to beta test this. It's what I do for a living.

Trying to ignore the history. The update looks good. Can we see the US or final physical design?

    25. Jared Romanowich on October 28, 2013

At this point, I have more hope of getting coal in my Christmas stocking than this thing.. least IT'S not in beta.

    26. Jeremy Krantz on October 28, 2013

Is there a way to get refunded on this?

    27. Matt Rickman on October 28, 2013

LOL All the people that are expecting this for Christmas. If you're lucky you'll get this... someday.
