Ive been accepted to a 6 month residency in Germany. The venue is the Spinnerei studios in the city of Leipzig, from where the "New Leipzig school" of painters have emerged. The host is LIA a non-profit residency program which has created its own their artistic environment within the Spinnerei complex.
During the residency I will be painting full time to build a new body of work, based on my experiences in Leipzig. I believe that this opportunity will be incredibly helpful for me to develop my artwork by immersing myself completely in studio practice.
The period of my residency is between August 2015 and January 2016.
My Kick Starter project pays for just over half on the cost of the LIA residency. In total the residency costs are $9,500 AUD (6,600 Euro / $7,800 US) for the 6 months. This includes my accommodation in the studio itself.
The artwork I create will be representational and deal with the human body as well as different landscape environments. During the residency my aim will be to continue to develop a more personal aesthetic to exhibit in the future.
To enable a more personal approach I have been changing my process by drawing/ painting more from imagination. This strategy was used to develop a recent series of woks about the Bathurst region in Australia, as well as other figurative compositions. This process helps me to integrate elements compositionally as well as giving a more interpretive treatment of those features.
Risks and challenges
As the residency position is confirmed and a deposit has been paid, there is no threat to my placement at the LIA studios.
My living situation is included in the studio itself, so there wont be any serious practical issues to deal with.
Through other means I can pay for the remaining residency costs, as well as travel and living necessities.
By keeping a strong working rhythm I am confident I will achieve a lot of work, which meets all the reward commitments to sponsors, and builds my own portfolio for the future.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
