Please help me produce a play at Salesian High School in Boyle Heights. Our first production will be The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield on November 22, 23, 24. My students will gain experience working on a production from beginning to end by auditioning, rehearsing, designing, building, and running the show. I am working within a strict budget on this show so that our ticket sales will exceed our expenses in order to fund the next production.
High School theater programs offer creative outlets for students interested in developing performance skills and artistic abilities. Unfortunately, many schools do not have the funds available to start a theater program or people with the know how of running a successful program. When I arrived at Bishop Mora Salesian High School three years ago, there was no after school theater program. In the last three years I have created an after school drama club, taken students to see plays, and I run free improvisation workshops for students in the Summer. Now that I have completed graduate school I plan on refocusing my time and energy into creating a successful theater program at Salesian.
I am a graduate of Michigan State University with a B.A. in Theatre. I also attended Loyola Marymount University where I received a M.A. in Secondary Education. I teach Drama, English, and Speech. Most importantly, I am committed to developing a theater program that will be sustainable and become a pillar of success in the school and local community. However, putting on a quality production costs money... and that's where you can help!
I plan on using the funds raised for this show in the following way:
- $500 - Theater: Casa 0101. A wonderful professional 60 seat theater we will be able to rehearse in for a week and use for our performances. Using a professional theater will also allow my students to work with and learn from professionals in lighting design, sound/light board operation, and house management. Also, they gave us a great rate!
- $280 - Scripts and rights to the play.
- $500 to $750 - Set design and creation. My students will be building flats and painting them for backdrops. There are a few minor furniture items that need to be built.
- $500 to $750 - Props and Costumes. This show requires the use of many props and costume changes.
- ~ $200 - Promotion, tickets, posters, play bill, misc. expenses.
- Total: $1,980 to $2,480
All funds left unused will be kept in the theater budget for future productions.
Thank you for your support,
- Mr. John DeFour
Risks and challenges
I have wanted to start a theater program since I began teaching at Salesian, but I did not have the time due to being in graduate school. There was also a lack of enthusiasm and commitment from students. After three years I have completed grad school and I am willing to dive head first into this endeavor. I have developed a core group of dedicated students over the years through my Drama and Improvisation classes who are eager to take on the challenge of putting on a full production.
However, putting on a high school production can have many setbacks. Students can drop out from illness or grades, deadlines missed, not being able to find someone with a needed skill in costuming or construction. I have been working since April to mitigate these setbacks by anticipating needs and getting things done early.
I have set a tone of professionalism during rehearsals and my students know that this play is a collaborative effort that will require commitment from all involved. They know that they will have to step up if and when the time comes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
