Hi there, thanks for visiting our campaign.
So what is Galencia?
Well for those of you who are unaware of our 2017 Commodore 64 game, what better way to introduce it to you than a video review by the esteemed Rob Caporetto?
Galencia was a huge success in 2017 and we aim to make it bigger, better and lot more varied for this sequel, scheduled for release in November 2018.
Galencia won the coveted Reset64 Game of the Year and we want Galencia Khaos Sphere to be a contender for the 2018 award - the competition will be strong, but so are we!

THESE NOTES ARE FROM THE IN-PROGRESS DESIGN DOCUMENT AND ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE
What we have planned is a Shmup, with 3 different core elements.
- Vertical scrolling (detailed backgrounds)
- Reference points: Starforce, Xevious, A.S.O, Halley’s Comet
- Static screen (2d starfield)
- Reference points: Galencia, Astro Blaster, Galaga 88
- Perspective (3d starfield)
- Reference points: Gyruss, Tempest
All 3 different elements will be inspired by the stated reference points but will not be direct clones. If you think how Galencia was inspired by Galaga, this will give you an idea of the concept. To be clear, this will be taking the essence of the reference points, adapting to the Galencia lore and presented using the C64’s strengths. There will of course be many original elements and the reference points are provided to give you a feel of what to expect.
There will be other, smaller in scope, aspects to the main elements with a selection of mini games, these will be kept under wraps until release.
Flow of the game
After the introduction and title sequence, the player will select their game preferences and then plot a route through the Galaxy Map, each step of the path will be one of the 3 above gaming styles. As you approach the selected system, you will run a risk of interdiction. The first half of the map will have a risk of the Federation stopping you on your descent and the last half of the map is too dangerous for the Federation but is scavenged by Pirates, they will interdict you from time to time. These interdictions can be avoided by skillful manoeuvres and sometimes by bribery, if these options don’t work - prepare for a fight!
There will be 2 main boss fights, with additional smaller bosses to fight in various systems. There will also be traders indicated on the map where you can trade your collectable Promethean stars for Save Games, Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) and other enhancements. The stars are not just for points in this game, make sure to prioritise them on your journey.
Upon successful completion of a system, you will encounter a cut scene on the dropship, this will usually be between Ace Harper and Amy Starbanger, but there will be other characters. The tone of the scenes will vary, with some being serious and others being light hearted, there is a dedicated writer working on the story elements. Some of these scenes will advance the story and others will require decisions to be made. Depending on the decisions you make and your performance in game, there will be multiple endings to the game.
A selection of options above what has been seen in Galencia will include:
- English/Spanish language
- 6581 or 8580 SID chip
- Story mode on/off
As well as the player being able to plot their own path through the game, there will be a choice of 3 player ships:
- Galencia - fighter class - The all rounder, a firm favourite with rookies and seasoned pilots
- Gundola - nemesis class - Slightly slower than the Galencia but with much heavier firepower
- Spartan - interceptor class - The fastest ship on the roster with a rapid but weaker weapons system
Remember you also have the ability to choose your character, that’s a lot of different ways to play!
The sprite multiplexer has undergone some significant changes and now allows for some truly huge enemies, combine this with the immediate access to data from the cartridge and we have all the ingredients for some spectacular battles with no significant loading delays. There will be animated introduction and end sequences, these will feature full screen bitmapped graphics.
This is the first project for Team Galencia where we have made use of 3d modelling and rendering, this was introduced for Stretch Goal 3 - the 35mm model of the Galencia Fighter. This model has been invaluable for many other design purposes and translates well to the C64, ready for both bitmap and traditional artists to touch up and look amazing. Correct ratios and lines give a very consistent look to the visuals. This opens up the opportunity to model the Spartan Interceptor and Gundola Nemesis player ships to offer the same graphical fidelity as the Galencia ship - please see Stretch Goal 4 for more details.
We would like to take this opportunity to offer a very warm welcome to Jon Eggleton, whose bitmap images have caused quite a stir in the C64 scene.
- Jason Aldred - Design and Code
- Saul Cross - Sprite, Character Graphics and Maps
- Pulsebot - Music and Sound Effects
- Jon Eggleton - Bitmap Screens
- Flemming Dupont - Box Art
- Commodore 64 Club -3D Modelling and Concept Art
Please find a selection of media below to introduce you to various aspects of the game.
Please note this media is pre-production and is subject to change.

After the success of the Galencia fighter and the defeat of the Yenoh Armada, Earth returned to peace and soon after, its old ways of greed.
The unstoppable wheels of industry kept turning, destroying all in their path. No thought for life, beauty or the future. All eyes are on the present, never happy with what we have, we plough onward for more material possessions.
The great war was soon forgotten and the before we knew it a darkness that no one expected was cast upon us, the time for man was quickly coming to an end. The Khaos Sphere has descended and its curse unleashed.

Risks and challenges
Winning the coveted C64 Game of the Year award does not happen by accident, it happens through relentless revisions, making tough decisions and the drive to make something special.
Galencia Khaos Sphere will take the design principles and ramp them up to 11, we intend to bring something beyond the imagination of what is possible on the C64.
Such an ambitious project is not something to be taken trivially and I have been working hard on the design brief to make this happen. I have a strong support network with like minded developers on this endeavour and we are all committed to making this happen.
There are both artistic and technical challenges, from filling the 512k cartridge with high quality assets, a coherent story but most of all scaling and challenging gameplay to suit a wide range of player abilities.
Without the assistance of Kickstarter funding, this project would not be possible - it is simply too ambitious to be self funded. I hope you can feel the passion of the project and help make it a reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
