"When you walk a pilgrimage route, your feet touch the earth with big spaces between them but when you prostrate, your whole body connects with the sacred ground to close the circle."The Dalai Lama
TAHOMA KORA 2011
A Human-Powered Spiritual Journey
THE KARMA GENERATOR
My name is A K Mimi Allin. I'm a Seattle-based, conceptual artist embarking on a spiritual journey. I'll walk out my studio door this June and head off in search of the sacred. The center of spiritual energy here in the Pacific NW is Mt. Rainier, so that's just where I'll go. I'll walk south to Rainier, perform a 93-mile prostrating pilgrimage around it and walk back home. Prostrate means to stretch out with your face on the ground in adoration. Prostrating is a slow process. The whole journey will take upwards of three months. I'm looking for patrons to sponsor me. Sponsor me for a day and provide me with a mantra—a charm, a prayer, a simple thought—to keep me alert to my task. I'll recite one mantra per day, all day, and split the merit with my sponsors. Listen for them this summer, when the wind blows warm. Listen for the steady stream of prayers. Tahoma Kora is about how we locate and create the sacred in the landscape. No need to cross an ocean, we can make the spiritual happen right here in our own backyard. The concept of sponsoring a pilgrim to perform a circumnavigation and splitting the merit is borrowed from the same practice in Tibet.
A CLEAN SLATE
Karma is the good that comes from doing good in the world, like partnering with an artist on a spiritual quest. Want to clean your slate, earn some good karma, atone for the sins of your forefathers? It's said one pilgrimage around the sacred Mount Kailash in Tibet can take away the sins of a lifetime. What might a pilgrimage around Mount Tahoma do? We might not achieve instant enlightenment, but still we have the opportunity to transform ourselves and our community, maybe even a future generation or a nation.
I need your support. Your gifts will cover the cost of food, a dehydrator, a satellite GPS messenger and video documentation. Sponsors of $50+ are invited give me with a mantra of their choosing, something I can repeat all day long, for a full day. Well-known mantras include "Om" and "Om mani padme hum" and " May all be happy. May all be healthy. May we all experience what is good and let no one suffer," but you can make up your own. I recommend a mantra no more than 12 lines long.
Tashi Delek (Tibetan greeting meaning "May all auspicious signs come to this environment"). Thank you for your sponsorship! The karma you receive is equal to the goodness you give. Supporters are encouraged to give proportionate to their means. Donations of $20+ should please include your return mailing address for receipt of a postcard. Let the walking begin!
For the duration of this journey, I will wear a GPS tracker. Able-bodied, foot pilgrims are encouraged to follow my progress and hike in to meet me, maybe even prostrate a portion of the kora with me or fill my alms bowl. See Rainier National Park for information on fees, permits and weather conditions.
