CAP-XX - "At the heart of the iExpander is an ultra-thin CAP-XX supercapacitor, driving a powerful LED flash, and delivering far more light energy than is possible with the battery alone. The result is crisp photographs and outstanding videos in low light"

As seen in:

Mashable -

"iExpander for iPhone 5 brings back the 30-pin connector and more"The Verge

"it solves the problem of that new connector called ‘lightning" - Tech Guy - ABC 31 -

"check out the difference in images when taken without and then with the case–amazing"Gear Diary

"the iExpander brings along the microSD slot that has eluded the iPhone for generations" - Tom's Hardware

"this iPhone case on steroids expands a lot of your phone’s capabilities" - Mashable

"This is a solid idea, in my opinion"  "It clocks in at 6.3mm, but that’s impressive for all of the features that it adds" - App Advice

"too cool to be overlooked" - Phone Arena

"It can make the iPhone 4 or 4S bigger, faster and stronger than ever before" - TechRiot

Start with your imagination...

Imagine your iPhone actually taking great low light images like a good point and shoot/video camera.......Imagine transferring those video, pictures, movies, or any other Apple supported files from your iPhone to an internal microSD card so you're not limited by your iPhone memory anymore......Imagine doing all of this as well as running a bunch of apps and not worrying about your iPhone battery dying at 4:00 PM when you aren't going to be back home to charge it until 10:00 PM........STOP IMAGINING, IT'S HERE!

My name is Charlie Corry and I'm a happy iPhone user who owns a manufacturing company in Chicago. We have been designing and manufacturing products for other companies for over 20 years. Now we're happy to be doing it for ourselves. My colleagues and I all own iPhones and we love them but we don't like the low light images it takes, we don't like being limited by the internal iPhone memory and we don't like our batteries running out before our day is done. So, we set out to see if we could solve all of these problems by making what’s essentially a multi-function “iPhone Expansion Device” and incorporating it into a protective case. It took a lot of work but we did it. We call it the iExpander.

Poor Low Light Images...

We knew the iPhone took poor low light images, so we had to figure out why and how to fix it. Figuring out why was easy. The iPhone’s lens & light sensor are very small and they don’t let enough light in. The hard part was fixing it without changing the lens or light sensor. When we brightened the flash with a Xenon bulb, it helped a little but didn’t solve the problem. After lots of research, we learned that we needed to control the light energy to get our desired images.  Light energy is a measurement of light power over time.  We needed to add more LEDs but we also needed to create special circuitry to increase the power to the LEDs and extend the length of the flash. The end result was unbelievable! Look at these before & after pictures below from the iPhone Flash compared to the same picture, in the same light, taken with the iExpander flash. There are more examples in our main video.  The same held true for the video. You can see those results in our main video too.

Expandable Memory...

Why doesn't the iPhone have expandable memory? We don't know but we wanted it, so we added a microSD card slot to our iExpander. Now you have unlimited expansion of your iPhone memory, up to 64GB (largest microSD card we are aware of) at a time. Transfer any Apple supported file (movies, videos, pictures, spreadsheets, etc.) from your iPhone to the iExpander microSD card or from anywhere else to the microSD card and then to your iPhone and the app is very easy to use.  Please refer to the main video to view the app.

2X Battery Life...

Help!!! I have 5 hours left in my day, my charger is at home and my battery is at 10%!!! Relax, help is here. We added the same Li Polymer battery that's in the iPhone to the iExpander so now you have double the battery life.

The iExpander battery power indicator is the same one you're used to seeing on your iPhone and it's right next to iPhone indicator. One for the iPhone, one for the iExpander.  Lots of you have asked how this can be done. Apple scrapped an old bluetooth earpiece project but they left the ability for a battery indicator on this bar in iOS. Jawbone has used it for their products and we are hopeful that we can too.  If we can't, we will put it somewhere else but either way, it will not affect functionality.

Prototype...

Here's our first functional prototype. It's made from a Stereo Lithography process so it's kind of translucent and not very strong. We have lots of experience with different materials and we know what materials and properties are best for this application in production.  We want to make sure that the iExpander wont break after a few drops so the production units will be made from a graphite reinforced nylon that's very strong & flexible.  As you can see below, we had to jam a lot of electronics into this small area so we used the thinnest printed circuit board available and the lowest profile chips.  Our goal was to make the iExpander as thin as possible and it ended up only adding 6.3mm to the iPhone.  This is thinner than any battery case that we know of and we're very happy about that considering how much more the iExpander can do.

Manufacturing & Distribution...

The battery, printed circuit board, connectors and graphite reinforced nylon case will be manufactured and purchased in China. The LEDs and most of the electronic components will be purchased in the US and shipped to our assembly factory in China where the assembly of the iExpander will take place.  The finished iExpanders will be shipped to our Chicago warehouse where they will be inspected and shipped out to our Kickstarter backers.

Why Do We Need The Money...

Your pledges will go towards paying for the plastic injection mold tooling, agency approvals and app finalization.  If we reach our goal, we will be able to place bulk orders for components & materials, which will allow us to keep our price down.
