About this project

There’s no place like California. And there’s really never been a magazine that captures it.

Until now.

Journal of Alta California is a new quarterly magazine that provide a smart, literate, witty look at all things California. The people. The issues. The culture. The politics. The history. The arts. The technology. The entertainment. The food. All the things that make California a vibrant, unique, exciting, innovative, maddening, distinctive nation unto itself.

Relying on the best writers, photographers and artists the state has to offer, Alta will bring to the stories from the Pacific coastline to the fields of the Inland Empire, and from the redwoods in the north to the desert in the south—and everything in between. Hollywood. Silicon Valley. Sacramento. The farmland. The forests. The rocky shores and sandy beaches. Alta will chronicle it all.

Nearly 40 million people live in California; Alta will tell their stories. Many of the best trends start in California; Alta will cover them as they are being born. Issues from immigration to taxes to the environment are bitterly fought over in the state; Alta will help readers understand them. California’s history is rich and unusual; Alta will make it fresh and interesting.

Imagine if California had its own version of the New Yorker, proudly covering the state and looking haughtily back at the rest of the country. That’s Alta. We’ll also have a website, social media, and a regular series of events featuring some of the most interesting people in the state.

You can be among the first to be part of this colorful, exciting new adventure in journalism. We’re seeking people who love and are fascinated by California to sign up to be charter subscribers—members, if you will, of the Alta club. By supporting Alta, you can get the first-year of the magazine (four issues) at a bargain price. For a bit more, we’ll list your name in the first issue as a contributor. And for a little more, we’ll give you an invite to Alta’s launch party in San Francisco. We're hoping to sign up enough charter members to prove that there's strong demand for a smart, literate magazine about California.

We think Alta is going to be very special, and we hope you will, too. Join us in creating a new magazine for the 21st century about the most important state of the 21st century.

Risks and challenges

Alta has financial backing that will ensure that the magazine’s funding is sufficient for a year’s worth of publication (four issues). So there is little or no risk involved in becoming a charter supporter. We're hoping to use this Kickstarter drive to validate that there's an audience for a high-quality magazine about California. Like any publication, Alta is subject to the whims of the editorial and production process, which could slightly delay publication of an issue, but we don’t anticipate that being a major problem.
