About this project
Thank you for visiting our Kickstarter Page for The Noise Beneath the Apple™
This project began as a series of interviews and profiles that appeared in various music and culture e-zines. With each column, more and more readers reached out and connected.
For the next twelve months, I traveled throughout New York City. I was moved by the stories of the people who performed in these public spaces. The entire globe was represented, and I realized that we don’t live in a small world but a large room.
I wanted to capture this room and pay tribute to a lifestyle, and the people who choose to live it every day.
Then I met Bryan Close, a Brooklyn based, urban landscape photographer with a love for the underground. We began collaborating.
18 months have gone by. Bryan and I have captured over 10,000 images, hours of video footage, and 40 interviews with New York City buskers past and present. We have delved into the history, culture and politics of busking. The buskers are collaborating with us to assemble a beautiful audio component.
Why We Need You
We intend to present these stories in the form of an over-sized, limited edition, art book, using the inspiring backdrop of New York City.
The budget for The Noise Beneath the Apple™ will be spent on design and production of the various facets of the book. We have a solid mock-up, and we need your support to finalize the legal and technical aspects, such as:
- Book Size: 12 x 12, hardcover, slip-cased, 120-150 pages
- Book Design, interior and cover
- Book Editing and Research Verification
- An expected 250 1st Run, Limited Edition, Signed Copies.
- A print run of 250 2nd Run Editions.
- A set of 4 high-end photographic images, ready for framing
- Audio component licensing and production
- Video component production
A Parting Thought:
Ultimately, we want to share these stories with you, and with future generations.
Everyone is invited to participate. So, if you live in or just love New York, or you dig the busking and music scene, we welcome you to contribute and be part of something truly special.

Well, Big Guns imply more than one, so here’s the second Big Gun! Everything that has already been mentioned, but in place of the guitar strap, we have created ONE—and only ONE, autographed Musical Saw! This musical saw is made from imported English steel and donated by Mussehl & Westphal Musical Saws ®, the oldest musical saw manufacturer in the U.S. It has been specially made for this project and autographed by the buskers, from TNBTA™ book! We have also created a mini-book of photos, to accompany the saw, catching the musicians as they autograph the piece. The saw will be presented in a glass shadow box display, for your convenience.
