We are Walking Distance, a freewheeling high-energy quartet comprised of four unique individuals who blend together seamlessly. In 2012 we came together and defined our vision – to thoughtfully develop music that questions convention while embracing our influences. This vision has led us to some exciting and unique musical discoveries.
Freebird is the title of our current project and the reason we are asking for your support. This journey began over two years ago with music by Charlie Parker that we smashed, stretched, flipped, reversed and reorganized into new music and ideas for us to explore. Then we developed and refined the music over two years of rehearsals and performances. Now we’re ready and eager to get Freebird out of our heads and into your ears.
We are thrilled to have Jason Moran as a part of Freebird. He is one of the most celebrated pianists of his generation, a MacArthur fellow, Grammy nominee, artistic director for Jazz at the Kennedy Center, a Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, and scored the 2014 film Selma. Several of the songs developed into perfect vehicles for his incredible dynamism and creativity and his musicianship and experience will be invaluable to this project.
To help us realize the sonic possibilities for the album we are collaborating with our longtime friend producer/mixer Ben Rubin. Ben is Grammy nominated, the sonic architect of the SmallsLive catalog, selected five times by the DownBeat critics poll for Rising Star Producer, and was the mixing engineer on our first album, Neighborhood. His creativity and ingenuity will help us construct intriguing soundscapes for each song. This is an ambitious project that will involve different recording equipment, setup and processes for each track to help give each song a unique sound that complements it.
Please note that our fundraising goal is the minimum we need to help us cover the costs of recording, mixing, mastering, and duplicating the album. However, any additional funds raised will help us with the continuing publicity, marketing, and touring costs associated with Freebird. Additionally, for every $1000 we raise above the goal we will create brand new audio and/or video content available exclusively to our backers as a thank you for your support. Wanna see another bird mask video? Hilarious outtakes? Walking Distance arrangement of Feed the Birds from Mary Poppins? Let's make it happen!
With your help we will be able to make this project a reality.
Thank you for your support!
