In a nutshell: Do I Know You? is an album of pop-rock music with a 60s and 70s aesthetic written from a classical composer's approach, imbued with jazz harmonies, and influences by the sounds of Spain, Brazil, and India.
This project will serve as a launching pad into my future career as a performing artist. The undertaking will be to record nine fully-scored original works, which will amount to roughly forty minutes of material. These compositions range in terms of instrumentation from ensembles of nine to nineteen, totaling over thirty five instruments across the album. I have recruited over twenty five students in the Bienen School of Music – from both jazz and classical backgrounds – to volunteer their time and talent for this enterprise.
Do I Know You? is an exploration of the various permutations of love, from infatuation, to tender affection, to the love of fame and power. The lyrics I've written and set to each of the nine songs – in conjunction with recurring musical motives – collectively tie thematic material together into a comprehensive whole.
The project will require roughly fifty hours of recording and approximately twenty hours of mixing and mastering. I will be recording at a local studio that offers a rate of $95 -- and your contributions will go directly to these expenses. My approximated total cost is $7,000. The recordings will take place between May 17th and June 7th; mixing and mastering will follow immediately thereafter.
Risks and challenges
The challenges all come down to organization -- scheduling rehearsals, finding times to get players into the studio, and ensuring that the written parts are clear and easy to follow.
All the work I've done so far has led up to this project, and I'm uniquely qualified to undertake its challenges. I've had two years of experience running a band -- the Aurelia Trio -- and with it I performed over 60 gigs publicly, organized countless rehearsals, and engaged 5 recording projects. I've put out two extensive demo albums totaling twenty seven originals that translate to roughly two hours of material.
Now I'm ready to take this task on professionally. I know what it takes to get people organized, rehearsed, and ready to lay down their part. The songs are already written and the arrangements scored. All that's left is getting into the studio and laying down the tracks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
