To date Steve Maschuck and I successfully completed through Kickstarter two volumes of the Journal of Lovecraftian Science. These volumes were an expansion of the work that is presented at www.lovecraftianscience.wordpress.com, a blogsite dedicated to conducting scientific investigations into the Cthulhu Mythos that was initiated in September 2013.
The first volume focused on a variety of subjects, including discussions on Lovecraft’s love for Science, the biology of some Lovecraftian entities, Einstein in a Lovecraftian universe, the short story “From Beyond” and mathematics in “The Dreams in the Witch-House.” It also included a number of articles that backers requested such as discussions on Cthulhu, how humans and Deep Ones can interbreed and the Dreamlands. A chapbook Biology of the Old Ones was also produced.
Volume 2 of the Journal contained a set of articles with the overarching theme of the Lovecraftian Solar System, with articles on the planets of our solar system, exoplanets, comets and meteors. Again, another set of articles were produced on questions posed by backers, which includes subjects such as the Shaggai and the Shan, Warfare of the Old Ones and What Exactly is Azathoth? The chapbook associated with the 2nd volume was titled Essays on Yuggoth.
SO WHAT’S THIS KICKSTARTER ABOUT?
This Kickstarter is for the 3rd volume of the Journal of Lovecraftian Science and the overall theme will be stories that Lovecraft either ghost wrote or co-wrote. Similar to the previous volumes, the 3rd volume will be approximately 135 to 150 pages in length and will include a least one illustration for each chapter. In turn, each chapter will be a discussion of scientific ideas or concepts of each revision tale. These tales will include:
· The Mound, with by Zealia Bishop
· Out of the Aeons, with Hazel Heald
· The Horror in the Museum, with Hazel Heald
· The Horror at Martin’s Beach, with Sonia H. Greene
· Through of Gates of the Silver Key, with E. Hoffmann Price
· Till A’ the Seas, with R. H. Barlow
· The Green Meadow, with Winifred V. Jackson
Also, another chapbook will be made available on a description of the ecosystem of Lovecraft’s Venus in the tale “In the Walls of Eryx,” co-written with Kenneth Sterling. In addition, if the total amount of raised funds exceed $5,500.00, another chapter will be included in the Journal for “The Curse of Yig,” co-written with Zealia Bishop.
SO WHAT WILL THE REQUESTED MONEY BE USED FOR?
The money raised through this Kickstarter will be used to conduct detailed, scientific investigations on a series of Lovecraft's revision tales. The articles developed for this periodical will not be available on the blog site. The Kickstarter will also cover costs for Steve Maschuck to produce at least 8 original pieces of artwork exclusively for this Volume. Finally, the Kickstarter will also cover professional editing and formatting of the periodical into digital formats. Additional material, either as new articles and/or new artwork, will be included, if higher pledge amounts are submitted (see rewards). Also, if the total amount of raised funds exceed $5,500.00, then an additional chapter will be included on the tale "The Curse of Yig," which will include another illustration.
WHEN DO I GET MY REWARD?
The digital and hard copies of the Journal of Lovecraftian Science, Volume 3 and the chapbook The Ecosystem of Lovecraft’s Venus (In the Walls of Eryx) will be forwarded to all backers in March 2019.
Risks and challenges
The main obstacle associated with the project is putting the text together for the proposed periodical. Fortunately, a portion of the text is already complete; this proposed project will increase the level of detail associated with each article. If funded, the project will be completed and digital copies will be submitted to all backers. While there may be some slight delay in completing the periodical, the disciplined experience I have acquired over the course of almost three years in putting articles up on the blog site on a weekly basis will guarantee the successful completion of the project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
